Article Surah 104 · Ayah 5

Al Hutamah

Al Hutamah

Allah ta’ala says in Suratul Humazah about the one who spreads slander and backbites: لَيُنبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ Surely, he will definitely be thrown in Al Hutamah. And what makes you know what is Al Hutamah? It is the fire of Allah, already kindled. (104: 4-6)

Hutamah, the Crusher, is one of the descriptive names of the Hell fire and hatama means to crush something to pieces. Hutamah is also used to describe a person who eats a lot and is never satisfied. When we eat, we must chew our food first, then we are able to digest it. Similarly, the hell-fire will crush everything as it consumes. It will crush and mash everything thrown into it. Allah ta’ala tells us in Surah Qaaf taht hell fire will say: hal min mazeed? Is there any more?
Allah ta’ala describes Al Hutamah further by saying it is:نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ naar Allahil mooqadah, “it is the fire of Allah, kindled.”
This naar (fire) is attributed to Allah azza wa jal and when the idaafah (possession) of something is to Allah ta’ala, it gives great importance to that thing. So this fire has been kindled and lit by Allah ta’ala, and it is such a great fire that only Allah can light a fire of this naturee.

الْمُوقَدَةُ Al mooqadah: the one that is kindled. It is already burning right now, it is not going to be started on the Day of Judgment; it has already been light and set ablaze.
Furthermore Allah says:
الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ
[A fire] that will reach the hearts. (104: 7)
This fire will not be limited to the external body, rather it is going to consume the body and reach the core. It will penetrate through the body. This hutamah will be such a great consumer that it will consume all the way to the hearts. Allah ta’ala does not say it will reach the quloob, but rather it will reach the af’idah. Remember, a fu’aad is an emotionally charged heart, and these people who will enter Hutamah are the slanderers and backbiters, those who hurt the people in this dunya, and in the aakhirah they will be the ones hurt.
They will have no hope of escaping from Al Hutamah because:
إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ
Verily, it shall be closed upon them, (104:8)
مُّؤْصَدَةٌ Mu’sadah: they will be locked completely inside. This word is fromeesaad which is to put a fence so as to lock the animals inside. Eesaad is to firmly close, firmly shut the door so that there is no exit or way out.
Furthermore, eesaad is to turn something upside down like a box. When you want to trap a bug, you put a cup upside and cover it. Similarly this fire will be closed over them, there will be no escape and because the exit is closed, they will burn even more.
They will be locked completely inside in a narrow and constricted place while the fire will be covering them from the top and all around:
فِي عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍ
In pillars stretched forth. (104:9)
These people will be locked inside the columns and pillars of Hell-Fire which gives further meaning of a tight place. This ayah has also been understood as flames that will be like very tall pillars, rising out of the Fire.
Another name and description of Hell-Fire is Samoom.
