Benevolent Treatment towards Orphans, Girls, the Weak, the Poor and the Humble Persons

Allah, the Exalted, says:
“And lower your wings for the believers (be courteous to the fellow-believers)”.(15:88)

“And keep yourself (O Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam)) patiently with those who call on their Rubb (i.e., your companions who remember their Rubb with glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon, seeking His Face, and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world.” (18:28)

“Therefore, treat not the orphan with oppression. And repulse not the beggar.”(93:9,10)

“Have you seen him who denies the Recompense? That is he who repulses the orphan (harshly). And urges not the feeding of Al-Miskin (the poor)”. (107:1-3)

260. Sa`d bin Abu Waqqas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Six of us were with the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) when the infidels said to him: “Drive these ones away, lest they should begin to venture against us”. The six were, myself, Ibn Mas`ud, a man of the Hudhail tribe, Bilal and two other men whose names I don’t know. Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) thought what Allah wished him to think, and Allah revealed:

 “And turn not away those who invoke their Rubb, morning and afternoon seeking His Face.” (6:52)

261. `Aidh bin `Amr Al-Muzani (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Abu Sufyan passed by Salman, Suhaib and Bilal and some other Companions  (May Allah be pleased with them). They said to him: “Did not the swords of Allah exact their due from the foes of Allah?” Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) said to them: “Do you speak like this to the chief of the Quraish and their master?” Then he went to the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and related this to him. He (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, 

“Abu Bakr, perhaps you have angered them. If so, you have angered your Rubb”. Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) went back to them  and said: “Brothers, did I offend you?” They replied: “No. May Allah forgive you, brother”.

[Muslim].

262. Sahl bin Sa`d (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, 

“I will be like this in Jannah with the person who takes care of an orphan”. Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) raised his forefinger and middle finger by way of  illustration.

[Al-Bukhari].

263. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, 

“He who takes care of an orphan, whether he is his relative or a stranger, will be in Jannah with me like these two”. The narrator, Malik bin Anas raised his forefinger and middle finger for illustration.

264. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, 

“A Miskin (needy) is not the one who can be turned away with a date-fruit or two, or a morsel or two. The true Miskin is one who, despite his poverty, abstains from begging”.

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

 In another narration Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, ” A Miskin is not the one who goes round begging from people and who can be turned away with a morsel or two, or a date-fruit or two. A true Miskin is he who does not find enough to suffice him, does not disclose his poverty so that he might be given alms, and does not stand up to beg”.

265. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

 “One who strives to help the widows and the poor is like the one who fights in the way of Allah.” The narrator said: I think that he (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) added also: 

“I shall regard him as the one who stands up (for prayer) without rest and as the one who observes fasts continuously”.

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

266. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

 “The worst food is the food of the marriage banquet from which those are left out who would like to come; and to which those are invited who refuse to come. He who rejects an invitation disobeys Allah and His Messenger”.

[Muslim].

 In another narration Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

“The worst food is the food of the marriage banquet to which the rich are invited and from which the poor are left out”.

[Muslim].

267. Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

 “Whoever supports two girls till they attain maturity, he and I will come on the Day of Resurrection like this”. Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) joined his fingers illustrating this.

[Muslim].

268. `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: A woman came to me with her two daughters. She asked me (for charity) but she found nothing with me except one date-fruit, so I gave it to her. She accepted it and then divided it between her two daughters and herself ate nothing out of that. She then got up and went out. When Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) came in, and I narrated to him the story, he said, 

“He who is involved (in the responsibility) of (bringing up) daughters, and he is benevolent towards them, they would become protection for him against Hell-fire”.

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

269. `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: A poor woman came to me carrying her two daughters. I gave her three date-fruits. She gave a date to each of them and then she took up one date-fruit and brought that to her mouth to eat, but her daughters asked her that also. She then divided between them the date-fruit that she intended to eat. This (kind) treatment of her impressed me and I mentioned that to Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) who said,

‘Verily, Allah has assured Jannah for her, because of (this act) of her,” or said, “He (SWT) has rescued her from Hell-Fire”.

[Muslim].

270. Abu Shuraih Khuwailid bin `Amr Al-Khuza`i (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said,

 “O Allah, I declare inviolable the rights of two weak ones: the orphans and women”.

[An-Nasa’i].

271. Mus`ab bin Sa`d bin Abu Waqqas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Sa`d considered himself better than his inferiors, so the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him, 

“You are given help and provision because of your weak ones”.

[Al-Bukhari].

272. Abud-Darda (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, 

“Seek among your weak ones, for you are given provision and help only because of the weak amongst you.”

⦁ Quran and Ahadith on the poor and needy

1. The Quran
Attitude of the giver of charity

Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah and do not follow up their spending by stressing their benevolence and causing hurt, will find their reward secure with their Lord. They have no cause for fear and grief. To speak a kind word and to forgive people's faults is better than charity followed by hurt. Allah is All-Sufficient, All-Forbearing Believers! Do not nullify your acts of charity by stressing your benevolence and causing hurt as does he who spends his wealth only to be seen by men and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. The example of his spending is that of a rock with a thin coating of earth upon it: when a heavy rain smites it, the earth is washed away, leaving the rock bare; such people derive no gain from their acts of charity. Allah does not set the deniers of the Truth on the right way. (2:262 - 264)
The needy who do not do beg
Those needy ones who are wholly wrapped up in the cause of Allah, and who are hindered from moving about the earth in search of their livelihood especially deserve help. He who is unaware of their circumstances supposes them to be wealthy because of their dignified bearing, but you will know them by their countenance, although they do not go about begging of people with importunity. And whatever wealth you will spend on helping them, Allah will know of it. (2:273)
Economic exploitation
And do not become like the woman who, after having painstakingly spun her yarn, caused it to disintegrate into pieces. You resort to oaths as instruments of mutual deceit so that one people might take greater advantage than another although Allah puts you to the test through this. Surely on the Day of Resurrection He will make clear the truth concerning the matters over which you differed. (16:92)
Food and the needy
Have you seen him who belies the rewards and punishments of the Hereafter? He it is who drives away the orphan and does not urge giving away the food of the poor. (107:1 - 3) Give to the near of kin his due, and also to the needy and the wayfarers. Do not squander your wealth wastefully; for those who squander wastefully are Satan's brothers, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord. (17:26 - 27)
Greed
Look, you are being called upon to expend in Allah's Way, yet some of you are being niggardly, whereas the one who is niggardly is, in fact, being niggardly only to himself. Allah is Self-Sufficient: it is you who are the needy. If you turn away, Allah will replace you by another people, and they will not be like you. (47:38)
Moderation in giving
Do not keep your hand fastened to your neck nor outspread it, altogether widespread, for you will be left sitting rebuked, destitute. (17:29) (In reference to the slaves of Allah) "who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly but keep the golden mean between the two (extremes) (25:67)
Righteousness
You shall not attain righteousness until you spend out of what you love (in the way of Allah). Allah knows whatever you spend. (3:92)
Sadaqa
(O Prophet!) Tell those of My servants who believe that they should establish Prayer and spend out of what We have provided them with, both secretly and openly, before there arrives the Day when there will be no bargaining, nor any mutual befriending. (14:31)
Stinginess
Allah does not love the arrogant and the boastful, who are niggardly and bid others to be niggardly and conceal the bounty which Allah has bestowed upon them. We have kept in readiness a humiliating chastisement for such deniers (of Allah's bounty) (part of 4:36 and all of 4:37)
Zakat-what you owe from your money
The people who where given the Book before this did not divide into sects until after the clear statement (of the Right Way) had come to them, and the only Command they were given was to worship Allah, making their religion sincerely His, turning all their attention towards Him, and to establish the Salat and to pay the Zakat: for this alone is the most true and right religion. (98:4 - 5)
Establish Prayer and dispense the Purifying Alms (Zakat) and bow in worship with those who bow (2:43)
The believers, both men and women, are allies of one another. They enjoin good, forbid evil, establish Prayer, pay Zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Surely Allah will show mercy to them. Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise (9:71)
The alms (Zakat in this specific verse?s case) are meant only for the poor and the needy and those who are in charge thereof, those whose hearts are to be reconciled; and to free those in bondage, and to help those burdened with debt, and for expenditure in the way of Allah and for the wayfarer. This is an obligation from Allah. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. (9:60)

2. The Hadiths

Begging

Narrated Hakim bin Hizam that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The upper hand is better than the lower hand (i.e. he who gives in charity is better than him who takes it). One should start giving first to his dependents. And the best object of charity is that which is given by a wealthy person (from the money which is left after his expenses). And whoever abstains from asking others for some financial help, Allah will give him and save him from asking others, Allah will make him self-sufficient. (Bukhari)

Abu Huraira related that the Prophet said: He who makes a habit of asking from others reaches out for a brand of Fire, so let him refrain or continue, as he desires. (Muslim)

Clothing

Ibn Abbas related that the Prophet said: Any Muslim who gives a Muslim a garment to wear will be in Allah's safekeeping as long as a shred of it remains on him. (Ahmad, Tirmidhi)

Debt: Relieving the person in debt

Abu Qatadah related that the Prophet said: If anyone would like Allah to save him from the hardships of the Day of Resurrection, he should give more time to his debtor who is short of money, or remit his debt altogether. (Muslim)

Food and the needy

Safwan ibn Salim related that the Prophet said: Anyone who looks after and works for a widow and a poor person is like a warrior fighting for Allah?s cause, or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all night. (Bukhari)

Anas related that the Prophet said: If any Muslim plants something or sows seed from which a man, a bird or an animal eats, it counts as a charity for him. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Relatives who are needy

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet said: The best charity is that which is practiced by a wealthy person. And start giving first to your dependents. (Bukhari)

Salman ibn Amer reported that the Prophet said: To give something to a poor man brings one reward, while giving the same to a needy relation brings two: one for charity and the other for respecting the family ties. (Ahmad, Ibn Majah, Nasai, Tirmidhi)

Stinginess

Jabir reported that the Prophet said: Avoid doing injustice to others, for on the Day of Judgment, it will turn into manifold darkness, and safeguard yourself against miserliness, for it ruined those who were before you. It incited them to murder and treating the unlawful as lawful. (Muslim)

Zakat-what you owe from your money

Abbas related that a man asked the Prophet, Tell me what should I do to be admitted to Paradise and he (the Prophet) answered: Worship Allah associating nothing with Him, observe Salat, pay Zakat and strengthen the ties of kinship. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Abu Huraira related that the Prophet said: When someone is made rich but he does not pay Zakat for his wealth, then on the Day of Judgment his money will be turned into a poisonous snake with two black spots on its head. It will coil around his neck and bite his cheeks and say: 'I am your wealth, I am your treasure'. Then the Prophet recited verse 3:180 of the Quran. (Bukhari)

⦁ KAFFARAH

“Kaffarah” (كَفّارَة ) is an expiation within the Islamic tradition that provides individuals for making up of deeds or if they commit a sin.

Literal Meaning
atonement ; atoning sacrifice ; expiation ; expiatory gift ; penance ; propitiation
- something you do to show that you are sorry for having done something wrong; expiation
- sacrifice made to expiate one's sins
- a gift is presented to free from the charge of a sin
- a gift that is offered to make amends for wrongdoings
- imposed punishment for regretting for mistakes

Islamic Meaning
The literal meaning of the Arabic term Kafarah means to remove, or blot out, or wipe out something.
When the term Kaffarah is used in Fiqh or Islamic Jurisprudence it would mean an act of prescribed atonement or penitence one has to do for making an error or mistake one has made, which will wipe out or blot out that evil in the Sight of Allah.
In effect, the kaffarah is but a manifestation of ones sincere repentance for their transgression of a specific mistake. [2]

Qur’an
⦁ Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] – then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be grateful. Surah Maidah 5:89
⦁ O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram. And whoever of you kills it intentionally – the penalty is an equivalent from sacrificial animals to what he killed, as judged by two just men among you as an offering [to Allah] delivered to the Ka‘bah, or an expiation: the feeding of needy people or the equivalent of that in fasting, that he may taste the consequence of his deed. Allah has pardoned what is past; but whoever returns [to violation], then Allah will take retribution from him. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution. Surah Maidah 5:95

Various Examples of Kaffarah

-

⦁ If one misses an obligatory prayer for any reason, its prescribed kaffarah or atonement is that one pray it later as soon as one remembers it.

⦁ If one misses an obligatory fast, its prescribed kaffarah or atonement is to make up the missed fast later; and if one is terminally ill and does not possess the strength to make up the missed obligatory fasts later, then the kaffarah of such a person is to feed one poor indigent person for each fast missed.

⦁ If one makes an error in or misses an obligatory rite of the Hajj pilgrimage, then its prescribed kaffarah is that one sacrifice a sheep as atonement.

⦁ If one has made a oath in the Name of Allah to do something and for some reason has to break that oath, then the prescribed kaffarah in Shariah is that such a person feed those who are indigent, or clothe them, or free a slave.

⦁ If one accidentally kills another person, the Shariah has prescribed that such a person manifest his repentance by paying the blood money and free a slave as the kaffarah; and if one cannot free a slave then they should fast two consecutive months.

⦁ If one has sexual intercourse with ones wife during one of the days of obligatory fasting in Ramadan, then Shariah has prescribed that one manifest their taubah for their transgression by either freeing a slave, or fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people. [2]
