Refutation of Those Who deny the Resurrection
Refutation of Those Who deny the Resurrection
Question
What are the means of making death, the grave and the Day of Resurrection stations of joy and happiness ?
Answer
Praise be to Allaah.
-Here Allah denounces the idolaters for their denial of the Resurrection and their belief that there is nothing after this life and no life or resurrection after death, which they based on the fact that their forefathers had died and had not returned. They said, If the resurrection is true, ﴿فَأْتُواْ بِـَابَآئِنَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَـدِقِينَ ﴾ (Then bring back our forefathers, if you speak the truth!) This is false evidence and a specious argument, for the resurrection will happen on the Day of Judgement, not in this world; it will happen when this world has ended and ceased to be. Allah will bring all creatures back, created anew. He will make the evildoers fuel for the fire of Hell, and on that Day you will be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger will be a witness over you. Then Allah threatens them and warns them of the irresistible torment other idolaters like who denied the resurrection, suffered. Such as the people of Tubba`, i.e., Saba'. Allah destroyed them, wreaked havoc upon their land and scattered them here and there throughout the land, as we have already seen in Surah Saba'. This was brought about because the idolaters denied the Resurrection. Here too, the idolaters are compared to them. They Tubba` were Arab descendants of Qahtan, just as these people (Quraysh) were Arab descendants of `Adnan. Among the people of Himyar -- who are also known as Saba' -- when a man became their king, they called him Tubba`, just as the title Chosroes was given to the king of Persia, Caesar to the king of the Romans, Fir`awn to the disbelieving ruler of Egypt, Negus to the king of Ethiopia, and so on among other nations. But it so happened that one of the Tubba` left Yemen and went on a journey of conquest until he reached Samarqand, expanding his kingdom and domain. He is the one who founded Al-Hirah. It is agreed that he passed through Al-Madinah during the days of Jahiliyyah. He fought its inhabitants but they resisted him; they fought him by day and supplied him with food by night, so he felt ashamed before them and refrained from harming them. He was accompanied by two Jewish rabbis who advised him and told him that he would never prevail over this city, for it would be the place to which a Prophet would migrate towards the end of time. So he retreated and took them (the two rabbis) with him to Yemen. When he passed by Makkah, he wanted to destroy the Ka`bah, but they told him not to do that either. They told him about the significance of this House, that it had been built by Ibrahim Al-Khalil, peace be upon him, and that it would become of great importance through that Prophet who would be sent towards the end of time. So he respected it, performed Tawaf around it, and covered it with a fine cloth. Then he returned to Yemen and invited its people to follow the religion of guidance along with him. At that time, the religion of Musa, peace be upon him, was the religion followed by those who were guided, before the coming of the Messiah, peace be upon him. So the people of Yemen accepted the religion of guidance along with him. `Abdur-Razzaq recorded that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "The Messenger of Allah said: «مَا أَدْرِي تُبَّعٌ نَبِيًّا كَانَ، أَمْ غَيْرَ نَبِي» (I do not know whether Tubba` was a Prophet or not.) It was narrated that Tamim bin `Abdur-Rahman said: " `Ata' bin Abi Rabah said, `Do not revile Tubba`, for the Messenger of Allah forbade reviling him.''' And Allah knows best.
And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, for mere play.) (39. We created them not except with truth, but most of them know not.) (40. Verily, the Day of Judgement is the time appointed for all of them --) (41. The Day when a near relative cannot avail a near relative in aught, and no help can they receive,) (42. Except him on whom Allah has mercy. Verily, He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.) Reference Link II.The Disbelievers thought that the Day of Resurrection would never come to pass
Allah tells us how the disbelievers thought that the Day of Resurrection would never come to pass, as they said: ﴿مَتَى هَـذَا الْوَعْدُ﴾ ("When will this promise be fulfilled...'') ﴿يَسْتَعْجِلُ بِهَا الَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهَا﴾ (Those who believe not therein seek to hasten it) (42:18). Allah says: ﴿مَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلاَّ صَيْحَةً وَحِدَةً تَأُخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ ﴾ (They await only but a single Sayhah which will seize them while they are disputing!) meaning, they are only waiting for a single shout which -- and Allah knows best -- will be the trumpet blast of terror when the Trumpet will be blown while the people are in their marketplaces and places of work, arguing and disputing as they usually do. While in this state, Allah will command Israfil to blow into the Trumpet, so he will sound a long note and there will be no one left on the face of the earth except he will tilt his head to listen to the sound coming from heaven. Then the people who are alive will be driven to the gathering place by a fire which will surround them on all sides. Allah says: ﴿فَلاَ يَسْتَطِيعُونَ تَوْصِيَةً﴾ (Then they will not be able to make bequest, ) meaning, with regard to their possessions, because the matter is more serious than that, ﴿وَلاَ إِلَى أَهْلِهِمْ يَرْجِعُونَ﴾ (nor they will return to their family.) Numerous Hadiths and reports have been narrated about this, which we have mentioned elsewhere. After this there will be the Trumpet blast which will cause everyone who is alive to die, besides the One Who is Ever Living, Eternal. Then after that the trumpet blast of the resurrection will be sounded. And the Trumpet will be blown and behold from the graves they will come out quickly to their Lord.) (52. They will say: "Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep.'' (It will be said to them): "This is what the Most Gracious had promised, and the Messengers spoke truth!'') (53. It will be but a single Sayhah, so behold they will all be brought up before Us!) (54. This Day, none will be wronged in anything, nor will you be requited anything except that which you used to do.) www.qtafsir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1484 III. Denying Resurrection after Death, is Strange Allah says to His Messenger Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, ﴿وَإِن تَعْجَبْ﴾ (And if you wonder.) at the rejection of the polytheists who deny Resurrection, even though they witness Allah's signs and evidences that He made in His creation which testify that He is able to do everything. Yet, they admit that Allah originated the creation of all things and brought them into existence after they were nothing. However, they deny Allah's claim that He will resurrect the world anew, even though they admit to what is more amazing than what they deny and reject. Therefore, it is amazing that they said, ﴿أَءِذَا كُنَّا تُرَابًا أَءِنَّا لَفِى خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ﴾ (When we are dust, shall we indeed then be (raised) in a new creation) It is an obvious fact to every sane and knowledgeable person that creating the heavens and earth is a greater feat than creating men, and that He Who has originated creation is more able to resurrect it anew, ﴿أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْاْ أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِى خَلَقَ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ وَلَمْ يَعْىَ بِخَلْقِهِنَّ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَى أَن يُحْىِ الْمَوْتَى بَلَى إِنَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ﴾ (Do they not see that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and was not wearied by their creation, is able to give life to the dead Yes, He surely is able to do all things)﴿46:33﴾ Allah described those who deny Resurrection, ﴿أُوْلَـئِكَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِرَبِّهِمْ وَأُوْلَئِكَ الاٌّغْلَـلُ فِى أَعْنَـقِهِمْ﴾
(They are those who disbelieved in their Lord! They are those who will have iron chains linking their hands to their necks. ) They will be dragged in the Fire by these chains, ﴿وَأُوْلـئِكَ أَصْحَـبُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَـلِدُونَ﴾ (They will be dwellers of the Fire to abide therein forever.), for they will remain in Hell forever and will never escape it or be removed from it. They ask you to hasten the evil before the good, while exemplary punishments have indeed occurred before them. But verily, your Lord is full of forgiveness for mankind, in spite of their wrongdoing. And verily, your Lord is (also) severe in punishment.) REference Link IV. The Resurrection is Real Allah said that they ask you to inform them (saying):
﴿أَحَقٌّ هُوَ﴾ ("Is it true'') asking about the return and the Resurrection from the graves, after the bodies become sand. ﴿قُلْ إِى وَرَبِّى إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ بِمُعْجِزِينَ﴾ (Say: "Yes! By my Lord! It is the very truth! And you cannot escape it!'') meaning that becoming sand does not make Allah incapable of bringing you back, since He originated you from nothing. ﴿إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْئاً أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ ﴾ (Verily, His command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, `Be!' - and it is!)﴿36:82﴾ There are only two other Ayat in the Qur'an similar to this. Allah commands His Messenger to give an oath by Him to answer those who deny the return. He said in Surah Saba', ﴿وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لاَ تَأْتِينَا السَّاعَةُ قُلْ بَلَى وَرَبِّى لَتَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ﴾ (Those who disbelieve say: "The Hour will not come to us.'' Say: "Yes, by my Lord!, it will come to you.'') (34:3) The second is in Surat At-Taghabun, He said: ﴿زَعَمَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ أَن لَّن يُبْعَثُواْ قُلْ بَلَى وَرَبِّى لَتُبْعَثُنَّ ثُمَّ لَتُنَبَّؤُنَّ بِمَا عَمِلْتُمْ وَذَلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ يَسِيرٌ ﴾ (The disbelievers claimed that they will never be resurrected. Say: "Yes! By my Lord! you will certainly be resurrected, then you will be informed of (and recompensed for) what you did; and that is easy for Allah.'') (64:7) Then Allah informed us that when the Resurrection is established the disbelievers will wish that they could ransom themselves from Allah's punishment with the equivalent of the weight of the earth in gold. ﴿وَأَسَرُّواْ النَّدَامَةَ لَمَّا رَأَوُاْ الْعَذَابَ وَقُضِىَ بَيْنَهُمْ بِالْقِسْطِ وَهُمْ لاَ يُظْلَمُونَ﴾ (And they would feel in their hearts regret when they see the torment, and they will be judged with justice, and no wrong will be done unto them.) ﴿أَلا إِنَّ للَّهِ مَا فِى السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ أَلاَ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ وَلَـكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ - هُوَ يُحْىِ وَيُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ﴾ (55. No doubt, surely, all that is in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah. No doubt, surely, Allah's promise is true. But most of them know not.) (56. It is He Who gives life, and causes death, and to Him you (all) shall return.) Allah is the Owner of the heavens and earth. His promise is true and is indeed going to be fulfilled. He is the One Who gives life and causes death. To Him is the return of everyone, and He is the One who has the power over that, and the One Who knows everything about every creature; its deterioration, and where every speck of it has gone, be it land, oceans or otherwise. O mankind! There has come to you good advice from your Lord, and a cure for that which is in your breasts, -- a guidance and a mercy for the believers.) (58. Say: "In the bounty of Allah, and in His mercy; therein let them rejoice.'' That is better than what (the wealth) they amass.) www.qtafsir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2615 V. Resurrection after Death Answer Praise be to Allah. When the son of Adam dies, his body disintegrates and vanishes apart from the tailbone, which is a bone at the base of the spine. When the Resurrection begins, Allah will cause the bodies to grow by means of rain from the earth which will make these bones grow until each person’s body is restored to the way it was before he died. It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘What is between the two Trumpet-blasts will be forty.’ Somebody asked, ‘Forty days?’ But I could not answer. Then he asked, ‘Forty months?’ But I could not answer. Then he asked, ‘Forty years?’ But I could not answer.” Abu Hurayrah added, “Then (after this period) Allah will send water from the sky and then the dead bodies will grow like vegetation grows. There is nothing of the human body that does not decay except one bone; that is the little bone at the end of the coccyx from which the human body will be recreated on the Day of Resurrection.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4651; Muslim, 2955). Al-Nawawi said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘What is between the two Trumpet-blasts will be forty.’ Somebody asked, ‘Forty days?’ But I could not answer…” What is meant is that he refused to specify whether it would be forty days, or years, or months. Rather what he was sure of was that it would be just forty. It is explained in another report narrated by someone other than Muslim, which says that it will be forty years. The phrase “the little bone at the end of the coccyx” refers to the small bone at the base of the spine, which is the end of the coccyx. This is the first part of a person that is created, and it is what will be left of him so that he will be created anew from it. Sharh Muslim, 18/92 When a person comes forth from his grave and is gathered and brought to account, his body will remain the same as it was before he died. Then when the people of Paradise enter Paradise and the people of Hell enter Hell, Allah will change their forms. Description of the people of Hell: It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The distance between the shoulders of the kaafir [in Hell] will be that of three days’ swift travelling.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6186; Muslim, 2852). It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The molar of the kaafir – or the eyetooth of the kaafir – will be like Uhud, and his skin will be as thick as three days’ travelling.” (Narrated by Muslim, 2851). Description of the people of Paradise: It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The first group to enter Paradise will look like the moon when it is full; then those who follow them will look like the brightest star in the sky. They will not urinate or defecate, spit or blow their noses. Their combs will be of gold, their sweat will be musk, their incense burners will be of aloes-wood. Their wives will be al-hoor al-‘iyn and they will all look alike, like their father Adam, sixty cubits tall.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3149; Muslim, 2834) It was narrated from Mu'adh ibn Jabal that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The people of Paradise will enter Paradise hairless and beardless, with kohl-rimmed eyes, all thirty or thirty-three years old.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2545). This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 8072. And Allah knows best. https://islamqa.info/en/answers/6974/resurrection-after-death VI. Her mother is illiterate and doubts the resurrection
QuestionMy mother is an illiterate woman, she does not read or write. She prays but she doesn't know what she says in prayer. She did not memorize but Surah Al-Fatiha. What shall I do sheikh? I tried to teach her the pillars of salah and what to say while praying, but she cannot learn as she is very old. Secondly: she cannot pronounce words correctly. She does not believe in resurrection after death, not due to kufr, but due to her old age. She says: “if I die will I live again?” please sheikh answer my question and make du’a for her and me
Answer
Praise be to Allah. Firstly: If a person is illiterate and cannot read or write, then he must be taught what to say in prayer and how to pray. The fact that he cannot read or write does not mean that he cannot do that, because it is something that is easy, praise be to Allah. Most of the Sahaabah (may Allah be pleased with them) could not read or write, but they learned well how to pray. Reciting al-Fatiha in prayer is one of the pillars or essential parts of the prayer, whereas reciting a surah after it is Sunnah and mustahab, so if your mother does not do it, there is no sin on her. But you should help her to memorize some short surahs such as al-Ikhlas and al-Mi’wathatayn (i.e., the last three surahs of the Quran). With regard to sujood (prostration), what one must say in it is Subhaana Rabbiyal-A’la (Glory be to my Lord Most High) once, but it is mustahab to say it at least three times. This phrase is undoubtedly easy, but if a person cannot say it that is due to his own shortcomings and negligence. Whatever the case, you should be kind to her and help her to carry on praying, and teach her whatever she needs to know of the dhikrs that are said in prayer. If she is unable to learn them, but she can recite al-Fatihah well as you say, then she can say whatever du’aa’s and tasbeehs she can, and whatever she is unable to do will be waived and she will be pardoned for that. Abu Dawood (792) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to a man: “What do you say in your prayer?” He said: I recite tashahhud and say: O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and I seek refuge with You from Hell. But I cannot murmur as well as you and Mu'adh do. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “That is what we are murmuring about.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood. Shaykh al-Islam said: The one who follows this principle, which is that the obligatory parts of prayer are waived for the one who is unable to do them, as are the obligatory parts of prayer in congregation and so on, has come to the right conclusion that is indicated by the Sunnah of the moderate way between the idea of neglecting some obligations of sharee’ah altogether and the idea of regarding them as not subject to being waived at all to the point that it makes a person ignore other obligations which are more important that that which he waived because he is unable to do it, even though he is able to fulfil these obligations that are more important. Therefore, to do what one is able to do and not do what one is unable to do is the middle way between two extremes. End quote from Majmoo’ al-Fataawa (23/247). Secondly: Denying the resurrection after death or doubting that it will happen is kufr which puts one beyond the pale of Islam according to scholarly consensus, because of the sound and clear evidence in the Quran and Sunnah which speaks of the resurrection. Rather common sense and sound human nature also point to that. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “The disbelievers pretend that they will never be resurrected (for the Account). Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): Yes! By my Lord, you will certainly be resurrected, then you will be informed of (and recompensed for) what you did; and that is easy for Allah” [al-Taghabun 64:7] “And indeed We created man (Adam) out of an extract of clay (water and earth). 13. Thereafter We made him (the offspring of Adam) as a Nutfah (mixed drops of the male and female sexual discharge and lodged it) in a safe lodging (womb of the woman). 14. Then We made the Nutfah into a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood), then We made the clot into a little lump of flesh, then We made out of that little lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We brought it forth as another creation. So Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators. 15. After that, surely, you will die. 16. Then (again), surely, you will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection” [al-Mu'minun 23:12-16] “And the Trumpet will be blown (i.e. the second blowing) and behold from the graves they will come out quickly to their Lord. 52. They will say: ‘Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep.’ (It will be said to them): ‘This is what the Most Gracious (Allaah) had promised, and the Messengers spoke truth’” [Yaa-Seen 36:51-52] “And he puts forth for Us a parable, and forgets his own creation. He says: ‘Who will give life to these bones after they are rotten and have become dust?’ 79. Say: (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) ‘He will give life to them Who created them for the first time! And He is the All‑Knower of every creation!’” [Yaa-Seen 36:78-79] And there are many other verses which speak of the resurrection and requital, followed by Paradise or Hell. And there are mutawatir ahaadeeth which tell of how people will rise from their graves and be assembled in the place of gathering, and they will stand, barefoot, naked and uncircumcised, and the sun will be brought close to their heads, and there will be the reckoning and requital, and admittance to Paradise or Hell. These are things which no Muslim has any excuse for not knowing; rather even non-Muslims such as Jews and Christians know them, so the one who denies them is undoubtedly a kaafir. What you must do is explain to her how Allah will honour those who obey Him, and will make the reckoning easy for them and admit them to His Paradise and the abode of His honour, and tell her about the punishment and humiliation that He has prepared for those who disobey Him and go against Him, and their miserable state at the time of death, in the grave and on the Day of Resurrection. Tell her of Allah's perfect justice, wisdom and mercy, and that it is not befitting for Him to leave mankind with no resurrection or reckoning: “ ‘Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?’ 116. So Exalted be Allah, the True King: Laa ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Lord of the Supreme Throne! 117. And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allah, any other ilaah (god), of whom he has no proof; then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely, Al‑Kaafiroon (the disbelievers in Allah and in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, pagans, idolaters) will not be successful. 118. And say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): ‘My Lord! Forgive and have mercy, for You are the Best of those who show mercy!’” [al-Mu'minun 23:115-118] And it is not befitting for Him ultimately to treat believers and disbelievers, righteous and evildoers, equally. “Shall We treat those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah __ Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds as Mufsidun (those who associate partners in worship with Allah and commit crimes) on earth? Or shall We treat the Muttaqoon (the pious) as the Fujjaar (criminals, disbelievers, the wicked)?” [Saad 38:28] “Or do those who earn evil deeds think that We shall hold them equal with those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah __ Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, in their present life and after their death? Worst is the judgement that they make” [al-Jathiyah 45:21] Tell her that these ideas are a slander against Allah and disbelief in Him. Al-Bukhaari (3193) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The son of Adam reviles Me and he has no right to revile Me, and he denies Me and he has no right to do so. As for his reviling Me, it is his saying that I have a son. And as for his denying Me, it is his saying: He will not remake me as He made me at first.” Seek help in teaching and guiding her from those whom you trust among her children and relatives. We ask Allah to guide her and set her affairs straight. And Allah knows best.
