Misconception Surah 87 · Ayah 9

The importance of kindness in admonition

The importance of kindness in admonition

Question
Some of my family members do not abide by Islamic teachings and commit major sins such as backbiting. I often advise them and sometimes in an annoying manner, such as shouting at them. But I only do so with the intention of advising them. Thus, I have a couple of questions:
1- What is the ruling on shouting at them with the intention of giving them advice?
2- Is it enough to remain silent when I hear them committing backbiting or other sins, intending to change that evil in my heart?

Answer

Praise be to Allaah.

And Allah knows best.

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

The Daa‘iyah (caller to Allaah) should adopt the attitude of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and show kindness and benevolence.

In a Hadeeth on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah   the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, stated that Allaah the Almighty loves kindness in all matters. [Bukhari and Muslim] In another Hadeeth on the authority of Jareer   the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, informed us that he who fails to be kind will lose much goodness. [Muslim]  Also, in a Hadeeth on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah   the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, mentioned that Allaah the Almighty is Kind and loves kindness and confers rewards for kindness that he does not confer for severity, nor for anything else besides it (kindness). [Muslim]

In this regard Allaah the Almighty ordered Moosaa (Moses) and Haaroon (Aaron), may Allaah exalt their mention, to speak gently with the staunchest tyrant Fir‘awn (Pharaoh). Allaah the Almighty Says (what means): {Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed. And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allaah].} [Quran 20:43-44]

If this is the case, how much more so will it be the case if the advised person is a Muslim relative, not to mention being a father or mother?

Thus, it is not permissible to raise your voice over them, whatever the reason might be.

Nevertheless, it is not permissible to stop giving advice or to remain silent regarding an evildoing. Unless the person fears for himself or his bodily harm due to advising, then it will be allowed for him to detest it with his heart and that will be enough.

And Allaah Knows best.

I fear Allah

O beloved, fearing Allah is the crown of the hearts. It is purification for the souls and living for the spirits. It is evidence of faith and an address for happiness. It is the secret of life.

 In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful   All the praises and thanks be to Allah. Prayers and peace of Allah be upon the chosen Messenger.

 O beloved, fearing Allah is the crown of the hearts. It is purification for the souls and living for the spirits. It is evidence of faith and an address for happiness. It is the secret of life. However, there is an enemy awaiting us; it is Satan. He has known his destiny, which is a Hellfire, blazing fiercely. Nevertheless, he calls for a deviated creed. He is continuously striving to lead the people astray from the true path. He does not give up or get tired of the rejection of people to his call. He destroyed us with sins, but we destroyed him with forgiveness. He looks at our heedlessness and hence, throws us with the arrows of his poisonous bow. Some of us ward off his bow with the weapon of faith. Others fall in his hell, smeared with lustrous desires. They do not wake up from their own negligence except in the camp of the dead. For such a falling person we say, “May Allah give you the best solace and may He redress the catastrophe.”   O beloved, this enemy fears Allah, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

Allah Glorified and Exalted says, {(Their allies deceived them) like Shaitân (Satan), when he says to man: “Disbelieve in Allâh.” But when (man) disbelieves in Allâh, Shaitân (Satan) says: “I am free of you, I fear Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!”} [Surat Al-Hashr: 16]

{كَمَثَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ إِذْ قَالَ لِلْإِنسَانِ اكْفُرْ فَلَمَّا كَفَرَ قَالَ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِّنكَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّـهَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ}

 Transliteration: Kamathali Ash-Shayţāni ‘Idh Qāla Lil’insāni Akfur Falammā Kafara Qāla ‘Innī Barī’un Minka ‘Innī ‘Akhāfu Allāha Rabba Al-`Ālamīna     Glorified is Allah.

The Devil calls us for disbelief but washes his hands from us on the Day of Judgment. He says it loud and clear, {“I fear Allâh, the Lord of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!”} [Surat Al-Hashr: 16]

 Transliteration:‘Innī ‘Akhāfu Allāha Rabba Al-`Ālamīna

 O young people, our enemy fears Allah. Why do not we really fear Allah, in our hearts and organs?   O beloved, whoever fears Allah, everything will fear him. In Addition, as much as you fear Allah, people will fear you.   One may ask, “What is the evidence that I fear Allah?”   The evidence, O beloved, is abiding by honesty. It is by sincerity to Allah, by purifying the heart from diseases and lustrous desires. It is by associating with the righteous, and observing Allah in solitude as the eye of Allah does not sleep. The evidence is crying from the fear of Allah, and embarking upon performing acts of obedience, and many others.   O brothers, whoever fears Allah truly, will find the sweetness of faith in his heart. He will live with people in body and with the Most Merciful in heart and soul. However, many people had been deprived of this because of their sins, may Allah help us.   O young people, ultimately I can only give you some illuminated examples from the fear of the ancestors of Allah. It may be a key to your heart, may Allah help us.   ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to cry a lot from the fear of Allah. He may pass by a verse of his allocated part of the Quran at night, and then he may cry from the lesson in the verse until the morning. He would then stay home for days; moreover, people would visit him thinking that he might be sick.

Ali ibn Al-Fudhayl, may Allah have mercy on him, could not read Surat Al-Qâri’ah or that it could be read while he was present. If it was read aloud while he was present, he would fall unconscious because of weeping.   It was authenticated that the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, kept reciting a verse till the morning while he was weeping. It was,

{“If You punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You, are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.”} [Surat Al-Mâ’idah: 118]

Transliteration: ‘In Tu`adhdhibhum Fa’innahum `Ibāduka Wa ‘In Taghfir Lahum Fa’innaka ‘Anta Al-`Azīzu Al-Ĥakīmu

 However, in our times, the ignorant of the nation reject the fact that some imams repeat the warning frightening verses for a few minutes. They say, “This is hard on us.” We say to them, “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, we have a good example to follow. Do the minds comprehend what I say?”   Al-Asma’i said, “A man wanted to commit adultery with a woman (who was refusing). She said to him, ‘Do you not have a warning mind, not to mention a warning religion?’ He said, ‘Only the planets can see us.’ She answered back, ‘Then what about their Creator?’“   Certainly, O beloved, the Creator of the planets is the Lord of of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists). Fearing Allah saves man from frequenting the places of vice. Some of the ancestors used to say when waking up in the morning, “O soul, today is your day. You have no other days. Therefore, strive in working (righteous deeds),” and then he would cry. When the night comes, he says, “Tonight is your night. You have no other nights. Therefore, strive in spending it in performing prayers and acts of worship.”

 Malik ibn Dinar said, “The daughter of Ar-Rabî’ ibn Khaythum said to him, ‘O father, why do I see people sleep and you do not?’ He replied, ‘(Thinking about) Hellfire does not let me sleep.’“   Some of the ancestors said, “We entered upon Ibrâhîm An-Nukha’i, visiting him in his illness. We found him crying. We asked, ‘Why are you crying?’ He answered, ‘I am waiting for the Angel of Death, wondering: will he give me the glad tidings of Paradise or of Hellfire?’“   A man said to Abu Hanîfah, “Fear Allah.” He trembled and changed in color. His status altered in fear from Allah. Then Abu Hanîfah said to that man, “May Allah reward you well.”   How needy the people are to someone who reminds them of that all the times!   Az-Zahabi mentioned in the Biographies, about Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her that she said, “By Allah, I wish that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight.”   When Abdullah ibn Shaddâd went to sleep on his bed at night, he used to roll over and over in it saying, “O Allah, Hellfire has taken sleep away from me.” He then would leave bed and perform prayers till the morning.   Bakr ibn ‘Ayyâsh said, “I prayed the Maghrib prayer (sunset) and Al-Fudhayl ibn ‘Ayyâdh was the imam. His son Ali was standing behind him. Al-Fudhayl read the words of Allah Almighty, {The mutual rivalry (for piling up of worldly things) diverts you,} [Surat At-Takâthur: 1] till he reached the verse, {Verily, You shall see the blazing Fire (Hell)!} [Surat At-Takâthur: 6] and he fell unconscious. He did not come to his senses but in midnight.”

 Transliteration: ‘Alhākumu At-Takāthuru

Transliteration: Latarawunna Al-Jaĥīma

    Sufian Ath-Thawri, may Allah have mercy on him, used to stand at the last hours of the night, praying and saying, “Hellfire, O Hellfire! Remembering Hellfire has preoccupied me from sleeping and from lustrous desires.”   Ibn Sîrîn, may Allah have mercy on him, was in debt by the end of his life. He said, “By Allah I do not know how I became in debt. Forty years ago I have called a man, ‘O bankrupt.’“ He kept crying and said, “O how numerous my sins have become.”   Al-Khatîb Al-Baghdâdi traveled to Mecca. In the morning, people asked him to preach them. He had a copy of the Quran with him, so he said, “Wait until I read from the Quran.” He began with Surat Al-Fâtiha until he reached Surat An-Nâs before sunset. He was reading and crying.   And this is Khalid ibn Al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him, who made conquests and fought a hundred battles, he killed by his sword more than one hundred men. When he got old, he took a copy of the Quran one day and began to read from it after the Fajr prayer (dawn) until noon. He was crying and saying, “Jihad (fighting in the cause of Allah) has preoccupied me from the Quran.”   But alas, what we have nowadays is youth who are deluded by playing games, staying up at night watching satellite channels, and racing cars. O Khalid, you have been kept busy by jihad from reading the Quran, however, your jihad is greater than reading the Quran. You have raised the rank of the statement, “there is no god but Allah,” (i.e. Islam) by your jihad. Khalid has given his blood, tears, and time to Islam. What have we; you and I, given to Islam?   Some of our youth, may Allah guide them to the right path, have given their tears to love and art. They have given their time to following football matches. Moreover, they have given their blood to addicting drugs. O how cheap the creation is when they waste the commands of Allah. O young people, if you do not turn to your Lord in repentance in this worldly life, there will come a time when remorse is of no avail. It is on the day of tears and sorrows.

Allah says, {The day that some of the Signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good (by performing deeds of righteousness) through his Faith.} [Surat Al-An’âm: 158]

 Transliteration: Yawma Ya’tī Ba`đu ‘Āyāti Rabbika Lā Yanfa`u Nafsāan ‘Īmānuhā Lam Takun ‘Āmanat Min Qablu ‘Aw Kasabat Fī ‘Īmānihā Khayrāan

  O brother, remember your standing before the Hands of your Lord, {And be afraid of the Day when you shall be brought back to Allâh.

Then every person shall be paid what he earned, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly.}[Surat Al-Baqarah: 281]

 O Allah, have I given my testimony, O Allah be my witness.   {

Transliteration: Wa Attaqū Yawmāan Turja`ūna Fīhi ‘Ila Allāhi Thumma Tuwaffa Kullu Nafsin Mā Kasabat Wa Hum Lā Yužlamūna

FEARING ALLAH IN OPEN AND SECRET

Fear of Allah is a form of worship connected to the heart that drives one to strive, to be earnest, and to have a disposition to perform acts of devotion...

This article is part of a free translation of al-Iftqar ila Allah, Lubb al-'Ubudiyyah by Ahmad al-Suwayan   The dread the believer should feel in relation to his righteous actions being rejected by the Almighty.

  Possessing fear of Allah is one of the most sublime qualities of those having iman;

Allah says:

 {The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.}

 [Sūrah al-Anfal 8:2].

Transliteration: Innama almuminoona allatheena itha thukira Allahu wajilat quloobuhum waitha tuliyat AAalayhim ayatuhu zadathum eemanan waAAala rabbihim yatawakkaloona

Allah also says:

 {And give good tidings to the humble [before their Lord]. Who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts are fearful.} [Sūrah al-Hajj 22:34-35].

 Transliteration: wabashshiri almukhbiteena (34) Allatheena itha thukira Allahu wajilat quloobuhum

 Fearing Allah in open and secret is one of the greatest signs demonstrating need and total deprivation before Him; whoever realises His greatness and omnipotence; His unconquerable authority; His eye that does not sleep; and reveres Him a manner befitting will truly fear Him:

{But for he who has feared the position of his Lord are two gardens.}

[Sūrah al-RaHman, 55:46].

  Transliteration:Waliman khafa maqama rabbihi jannatani

Allah also says:

{But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.} [Sūrah al-Nazi‘at 79:40-41].

Transliteration:Waama man khafa maqama rabbihi wanaha alnnafsa AAani alhawa (40) Fainna aljannata hiya almawa

 And He says: {...That is for he who fears My position and fears My threat.}

 [Sūrah Ibrahim, 14:14].

 Transliteration: thalika liman khafa maqamee wakhafa waAAeedi

One whose condition is such will have possessed a vigilant heart that shakes out of trepidation and is always in intimately conversant with its Lord. The heart will seek refuge in Him and plead for recourse bring a heart that is poverty-stricken and servile;

Allah says:

 Transliteration: Amman huwa qanitun anaa allayli sajidan waqaiman yahtharu alakhirata wayarjoo rahmata rabbihi qul hal yastawee allatheena yaAAlamoona waallatheena la yaAAlamoona

{Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’} [Sūrah al-Zumar 39:9].

 Allah also says:

{Their sides part [i.e., they arise] from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration...}

 [Sūrah al-Sajdah 32:16].

 Transliteration: Tatajafa junoobuhum AAani almadajiAAi yadAAoona rabbahum khawfan watamaAAan

He also says: {And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]}

[Sūrah al-Furqan 25:64].

 Transliteration: Waallatheena yabeetoona lirabbihim sujjadan waqiyaman   Al-Hasan al-Basri said, ‘Tears run down their cheeks in fear of their Lord.’   Contemplate the saying of Allah:

{Say, ‘Believe in it or do not believe.’ Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it – when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration, And they say, ‘Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled.’ And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Qur’an] increases them in humble submission.}

[Sūrah al-Isra’ 17:107-109].

  {قُلْ آمِنُوا بِهِ أَوْ لَا تُؤْمِنُواۚ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ مِن قَبْلِهِ إِذَا يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ يَخِرُّونَ لِلْأَذْقَانِ سُجَّدًا ﴿١٠٧﴾ وَيَقُولُونَ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِن كَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّنَا لَمَفْعُولًا ﴿١٠٨﴾ وَيَخِرُّونَ لِلْأَذْقَانِ يَبْكُونَ وَيَزِيدُهُمْ خُشُوعًا ۩}

  Transliteration: Qul aminoo bihi aw la tuminoo inna allatheena ootoo alAAilma min qablihi itha yutla AAalayhim yakhirroona lilathqani sujjadan (107) Wayaqooloona subhana rabbina in kana waAAdu rabbina lamafAAoolan (108) Wayakhirroona lilathqani yabkoona wayazeeduhum khushooAAan

     This is a total need for Allah and dejection displayed before Him;Sayyid Quṭub said: “They are unable to control themselves; they do not merely prostrate but ‘they fall upon their faces in prostration’, then their tongues actuate with the sensation of Allah’s greatness and true promise that has become fused into their emotions, ‘Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled.’ Being affected in this way overwhelms them and words no longer suffice as a manifestation of what is raging in their bosoms - tears stream down their faces conveying that profound effect words cannot express.” [Fi Ẓilal al-Qur’an, vol. 5 p.2245].   The condition for genuine fear is that which occurs in private as the heart is attached only to Allah neither turning to anyone nor anything else;

 Allah says: {Indeed, those who fear their Lord in private will have forgiveness and great reward.} [Sūrah al-Mulk 67:12].

Transliteration: Inna allatheena yakhshawna rabbahum bialghaybi lahum maghfiratun waajrun kabeerun

 Allah also says: {Who fear their Lord in private, while they are of the Hour apprehensive.} [Sūrah al-Anbiya’, 21:49].

  Transliteration: Allatheena yakhshawna rabbahum bialghaybi wahum mina alssaAAati mushfiqoona

 And Allah says: {And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far, It will be said], "This is what you were promised – for every returner [to Allah] and keeper [of His covenant]. Who feared the Most Merciful in private and came with a heart returning [in repentance].} [Sūrah Qaf 50:31-33].

 Transliteration: Waozlifati aljannatu lilmuttaqeena ghayra baAAeedin (31) Hatha ma tooAAadoona likulli awwabin hafeethin (32) Man khashiya alrrahmana bialghaybi wajaa biqalbin muneebin

  The Prophet (ﷺ) said in an authentic hadith:

“Allah will give shade, to seven, on the Day when there will be no shade but His...” One of the seven mentioned is “...a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears.”

 [Sahih al-Bukhari]

      Al-Hafiẓ Ibn Hajar commented concerning on this seclusion, ‘...because this will as far as possible be away from ostentation; and the intent here is to be secluded from turning to other than Allah even if one is (physically) in the company of others.’ [FatH al-Bari’, vol. 2 p. 147].

 Fear of Allah is a form of worship connected to the heart that drives one to strive, to be earnest, and to have a disposition to perform acts of devotion;

the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever fears, will travel during the night, and whoever travels during the night, will reach the destination."

[Al-Tirmidhi 4/633, no. 2450].

«من خاف أدلج، ومن أدلج بلغ المنزل» رواه الترمذي، حسن غريب

     For this reason Al-Hafiẓ ‘Ubaydullah Ibn Ja‘far said, ‘A slave cannot seek aid for his religion with anything better than the fear of Allah.’

 REFERENCE: [Siyar al-A‘lam al-Nubula’, vol. 6 p. 9].

  The reality of this worship of the heart is borne across the limbs and thus we find in the aforementioned hadith about the seven who will have Allah’s shade: “...a man who refuses the call of a charming woman of noble birth for illicit intercourse with her and says: I am afraid of Allah...”

 Disobedience presented itself before him in its most accomplished decorative appearance and most splendid manner of temptation and here was a man like any other man yet nothing but the fear of Allah prevented him from her.

ANECDOTE for CONTEMPLATION

There is a similar incident to this in the tale of the three persons who were caught stuck in a cave, when one of them supplicated: “O Allah! You know that I was in love with a cousin of mine, like the deepest love a man may have for a woman, and she told me that I would not get my desire fulfilled unless I paid her one-hundred Dinars (gold pieces). So, I struggled for it till I gathered the desired amount, and when I sat in between her legs, she told me to be afraid of Allah, and asked me not to deflower her except rightfully (by marriage). So, I got up and left her. O Allah! If You consider that I did that for fear of you than please remove the rock.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari].

 This meek woman resigned herself to him and could only muster the matter of reminding him to fear Allah but his heart awoke and became replete with fear of Allah, which prevented him from committing the sin; the saying of Sa‘id Ibn Jubayr is an exceptional definition of fear: “(Real) fear means to fear Allah to the extent that your fear prevents your disobedience – that is fear.”

Fear of Allah Almighty

 Fear of Allah Almighty is the highest rank of piety, since man could not attain the high ranks of the pious unless he feels afraid of Allah Almighty. In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Ever Merciful All perfect praise be to Allah; and may Allah send blessing and peace upon the noblest of Messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, his family and Companions. To go further: Fear of Allah Almighty is the highest rank of piety, since man could not attain the high ranks of the pious unless he feels afraid of Allah Almighty. In confirmation of that, Allah Almighty said (what means): - “The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.” [Al-Anfaal 8:2] {إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُهُ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَاناً وَعَلَى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ} الأنفال: 2 Transliteration: Innama almuminoona allatheena itha thukira Allahu wajilat quloobuhum waitha tuliyat AAalayhim ayatuhu zadathum eemanan waAAala rabbihim yatawakkaloona - “And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord.” [Al-Muminoon 23:60] {وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوا وَّقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ} المؤمنون: 60   Transliteration: Waallatheena yutoona ma ataw waquloobuhum wajilatun annahum ila rabbihim rajiAAoona ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: “O Messenger of Allah! Does it mean the one who commits theft and adultery, and drinks wine, because of which he fears Allah?” he, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “No, daughter of As-Siddiq! It means the one who offers prayer, observes fast, and gives in charity, and feels afraid of Allah (lest his deed would not be accepted from him).” Let us begin this epistle with talking about how the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, feared Allah Almighty, given that he was the most pious, and the most fearful of his Lord among all the people. It is narrated on the authority of ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she said: the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “I have the best knowledge about Allah among the people, and fear Him most among them all.” ‹‹إني لأعلمهم بالله ، وأشدهم له خشية›› The traces of fear used to be visible on his face if states changed with him. It is narrated on the authority of ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she said: I never saw The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, laughing loudly enough to enable me to see his uvula, but he used to smile only. Moreover, whenever he saw clouds or winds, signs of deep concern would appear on his face. I said: “O Messenger of Allah! When people see clouds they usually feel happy, hoping that it would rain, while I notice that when you see clouds, the signs of dissatisfaction are visible on your face." He said: “O ‘A’ishah! What ensures to me that there will be no punishment in it, since some people were punished with wind? Verily, some people saw (received) the punishment, but (while seeing the cloud) they said: ‘This cloud will give us rain.’" Due to his great fear while standing in front of his Lord (in prayer), he would weep so much that his chest would sound like the sounding of a boiling kettle. It is narrated on the authority of ‘Abdullah Ibn Ash-Shakhir, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, while he was performing prayer, during which I heard (him weeping and) his chest was sounding like the sounding of a boiling kettle, due to his great fear of Allah Almighty.” ‹‹أتيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو يصلي ولجوفه أزيز كأزيز المرجل›› Those are some examples illustrating how our Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, felt afraid of Allah Almighty. Now, let us pause a little with the states of the angels, peace be upon them, in their fear of their Lord Almighty. Allah Almighty says, praising them (what means): - “And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken a son." Exalted is He! Rather, they are [but] honored servants. They cannot precede Him in word, and they act by His command. He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they cannot intercede except on behalf of one whom He approves. And they, from fear of Him, are apprehensive.” [Al-Anbiyaa 21:26-28] {وَقَالُوا اتَّخَذَ الرَّحْمَنُ وَلَداً سُبْحَانَهُ بَلْ عِبَادٌ مُّكْرَمُونَ لَا يَسْبِقُونَهُ بِالْقَوْلِ وَهُم بِأَمْرِهِ يَعْمَلُونَ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَلَا يَشْفَعُونَ إِلَّا لِمَنِ ارْتَضَى وَهُم مِّنْ خَشْيَتِهِ مُشْفِقُونَ} الأنبياء: 26-28 Transliteration: Waqaloo ittakhatha alrrahmanu waladan subhanahu bal AAibadun mukramoona (26) La yasbiqoonahu bialqawli wahum biamrihi yaAAmaloona (27) YaAAlamu ma bayna aydeehim wama khalfahum wala yashfaAAoona illa limani irtada wahum min khashyatihi mushfiqoona - “And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant. They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.” [An-Nahl 16:49-50] {وَلِلّهِ يَسْجُدُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ مِن دَآبَّةٍ وَالْمَلآئِكَةُ وَهُمْ لاَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ (49) يَخَافُونَ رَبَّهُم مِّن فَوْقِهِمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ} النحل: 49-50 Transliteration: Walillahi yasjudu ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi min dabbatin waalmalaikatu wahum la yastakbiroona (49) Yakhafoona rabbahum min fawqihim wayafAAaloona ma yumaroona   It is narrated on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “O Gabriel! What is the matter with Michael that I never see him laughing?” he said: “Michael has never laughed since Allah Almighty created the fire (of Hell).” ‹‹يا جبريل مالي لا أرى ميكائيل ضاحكاً قطقال جبريل: إن ميكائيل لم يضحك قط منذ أن خلق الله النار›› It is narrated on the authority of Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “On the night I was made to set out on a night journey, I came upon the highest assembly (of angels), thereupon I saw Gabriel, peace be upon him, (as motionless) as a worn-out cloth because of his great fear (of Allah Almighty), thereupon I came to know his position.” ‹‹ مررت بجبريل ليلة أسري بي بالملأ الأعلى ، و هو كالحلس البالي من خشية الله عز و جل›› الألباني As such was the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and as such were the angels, peace be upon them: although they obeyed their Lord Almighty so much, they also feared Him so much. After that, let us talk about how the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, feared their Lord, and how they observed His commandments: When Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, entered a garden and saw a bird on a branch, he went on weeping and said: “Would that I be like this bird, having no good to receive nor sin to bear!" Al-Faruq, ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to weep and address himself saying: “Woe to you son of Al-Khattab unless Allah forgives for you!” It is related that once, ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, offered Fajr prayer in Kufah and then sat lowering his head, with the signs of gloominess visible on his face. Then he said something, after which the next Friday did not come upon him before he had died. He said: “I saw the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and I have never seen anything resembling them. Whenever morning came upon them, they would seem disheveled, pale (because of their long standing at night), with dust covering their clothes, and (swelling) in between their eyes like the goat’s knee because of their much weeping, having spent the night in prostration to Allah Almighty, and standing (in prayer), reciting the Book of Allah Almighty, reclining for some time against their feet (during their standing), and for some time against their foreheads (during their prostration). When dawn broke, they would remember Allah Almighty, and incline like the trees on a windy day, by Allah, as if they spent the night heedless (of the world round them).” After that he was not seen laughing nor smiling. ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, was in her death agonies when Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, came to visit her and inquire about her health. He asked her permission to enter upon her and she said: “Let not me engage myself in (the talk of) Ibn ‘Abbas (for I fear he would praise me so much).” It was said to her: “No doubt, Ibn ‘Abbas is one of the righteous Companions of your Prophet, and he likes to greet you.” She then admitted him. When he entered and sat he said: “Receive the good tidings as nothing separates you from meeting Muhammad and the beloved except that the soul should come out of the body. No doubt, you were the dearest wife to the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam; and the Messenger of Allah, , sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, never liked but good. (Remember when) your necklace fell down (and was lost from you), and the morning came upon the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in his halting place, and upon the people, and there was no water with them (which they needed to perform ablution and offer Morning prayer). On that occasion, Allah Almighty revealed (what means): "and find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]." [An-Nisaa’ 4:43] {فَتَيَمَّمُواْ صَعِيداً طَيِّباً} النساء: 43 Transliteration: fatayammamoo saAAeedan tayyiban And it was because of you that Allah Almighty gave that concession to this ummah. Furthermore, Allah Almighty sent down your innocence from seven heavens, and it was brought by the (Gabriel) the Trustworthy Spirit, and now there is no mosque in which Allah is mentioned but that it is recited in it as a part of the Holy Qur’an at the approaches of the night and both ends of the day.” She said: “Let not me engage myself in your talk now O Ibn ‘Abbas. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, I liked I had been in oblivion, forgotten.” May Allah be pleased with her. Remember also Mu‘ath, may Allah be pleased with him, who said to his sons and he was in his last breaths: “Inform me when morning comes.” They came and told him, thereupon he said: “O Allah! I seek refuge with you from a night (in) whose morning (one) is (admitted to) the fire! Welcome to death as a beloved that has come while one is bankrupt (of lovers). O Allah! (before death) I have been afraid of (the punishment of) You; and now (as I am dying) I hope for (the mercy of) You. O Allah! You indeed know that I did not like to be in this world, nor to live a long life in it to get springs or plant trees, in so much as to observe fasts more often at the scorching heat (of summer thereby I receive more reward), spend the long hours (in worship), and race the scholars to the gatherings of Thikr.” Then, he died, may Allah be pleased with him. Our righteous predecessors also had great situations in connection with their fear of Allah Almighty, of which we mention the following: Remember the rightly-guided caliph, ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abd-Al-‘Aziz, may Allah have mercy upon him, about whom his wife Fatimah, daughter of ‘Abd-Al-Malik, says: “We may find men who perform more prayers and observe more fasts than ‘Umar. But it is impossible to find a man more fearful of Allah Almighty than ‘Umar. “ she adds: “Whenever he prayed the Last ‘Isha’ in the mosque, he would come back to his praying place in the house and start performing the prayer of Tahajjud until he would be overpowered by slumber. Whenever he got up after that, he would persist in weeping until dawn.” When Harun Ar-Rashid went to Makkah, he ordered his minister to search for somebody to instruct him. Then, Harun went to Al-Fudayl in his house and when he entered, Al-Fudayl extinguished the lamp. He asked him: “Why have you extinguished the lamp O Abu ‘Ali?” he said: “No doubt, this darkness is easier than the darkness of the grave O Harun.” He said: “Give me more.” He said: “O Harun! No doubt, Allah Almighty will reckon every one about himself. But He will reckon you about everybody of your wards.” He went on weeping and said: “Give me more.” He said: “O Harun! I see you good-looking, of beautiful face. So, beware (of the punishment of) Allah lest you would distort your face with the fire of Hell.” On that he wept excessively from the depth of his heart. He said to his minister: “Should you guide us to somebody to instruct us, then, guide us to the like of this.” Muhammad Ibn Al-Munkadir, may Allah have mercy upon him, kept weeping so much until his family feared for him. They went to Abu Hazim and asked him to check him up, and Abu Hazim came and asked him: “What causes you to weep, may Allah have mercy upon you?” Muhammad said: “A Holy Verse in Allah’s Book which, when I recite, I could not help shedding tears.” He asked him about it and he said: “It is the statement of Allah Almighty (what means): “And there will appear to them from Allah that which they had not taken into account.” [Az-Zumur 39:47] {وَبَدَا لَهُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ مَا لَمْ يَكُونُوا يَحْتَسِبُونَ} الزمر: 47 Transliteration: wabada lahum mina Allahi ma lam yakoonoo yahtasiboona Then, all of us went on weeping. Sitting with his pupils, Sufyan Ath-Thawri, may Allah have mercy upon him, all of a sudden, went on weeping. They asked him about the reason and he said: “I feel afraid I would be deprived of faith at death.” When death approached him, he wept so much, and when he was asked about that, he said: “Woe to you! Do you know whether to Paradise or to the fire (of Hell) I would be taken?” Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, was in the habit of extreme sadness and fear of Allah Almighty. In comment on that, he said: “I feel afraid that when Allah Almighty looks at our deeds, He would say: ‘I would not accept anything from you.’” One day, ‘Ata’ As-Sulami, may Allah have mercy upon him, looked at the furnace thereupon he fell unconscious, for he remembered the statement of Allah Almighty (what means): “The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles.” [Al-Muminoon 23:104] {تَلْفَحُ وُجُوهَهُمُ النَّارُ وَهُمْ فِيهَا كَالِحُونَ} المؤمنون: 104 Transliteration: Talfahu wujoohahumu alnnaru wahum feeha kalihoona What is the outcome of the fear of Allah Almighty? The fear of Allah Almighty results in strict observation of (the commandments of) Allah Almighty, for the fearful of Allah always feels the significance of the statement of Allah Almighty (what means): - “and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah , of what you do, is Seeing.” [Al-Hadid 57:4] {وَهُوَ مَعَكُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ} الحديد: 4 Transliteration: wahuwa maAAakum ayna ma kuntum waAllahu bima taAAmaloona baseerun -“and thought it was insignificant while it was, in the sight of Allah , tremendous” [An-Noor 24:15] {وَتَحْسَبُونَهُ هَيِّناً وَهُوَ عِندَ اللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ} النور: 15 Transliteration: watahsaboonahu hayyinan wahuwa AAinda Allahi AAatheemun   - “Allah had enumerated it, while they forgot it.” [Al-Mujaadila 58:6] {أَحْصَاهُ اللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُ} المجادلة: 6 Transliteration: ahsahu Allahu wanasoohu - “Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers are with them recording.” [Az-Zukhruf 43:80] {أَمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّا لَا نَسْمَعُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْوَاهُم بَلَى وَرُسُلُنَا لَدَيْهِمْ يَكْتُبُونَ} الزخرف:80 Transliteration: Am yahsaboona anna la nasmaAAu sirrahum wanajwahum bala warusuluna ladayhim yaktuboona Of a surety, the strict observation of (the commandments of) Allah Almighty leads to self-mortification, by avoiding the (sins which result in) disobedience of Allah, and keeping patient on the (acts of worship which lead to) obedience of Allah. The seven whom Allah will shade underneath the shade of His Throne (of Majesty) on the Day of Judgment are either fearful of (the punishment of) Allah Almighty, or hopeful of His reward, and by virtue of both fear and hope, they will deserve this high rank on the Day of Judgment. That is the confirmation of the statement of the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, when he said: “No one wept out of fear of Allah would enter the fire (of Hell) until the milk returns to the udder once again.” ‹‹ لا يلج النار رجل بكى من خشية الله حتى يعود اللبن في الضرع›› The criterion in this is the statement of Ibn Taymiyah, may Allah have mercy upon him: “The due limit of fear is that which holds you back from the sins forbidden by Allah Almighty; and what is beyond that is unnecessary. That is the measure on which one knows whether or not he fears his Lord.” We ask Allah Almighty to make us of those who fear (the punishment of) Him, and hope for (the mercy of) Him, and to remove our terror, and endow us with (the privilege of) fear of Him secretly and publicly; and Allah is an ally to the righteous. Words about Fear

The state of fear is the most holy of the states of worship, it is obligatory on every Muslim

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful   All the praises and thanks be to Allah and peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Messenger of Allah.   The state of fear is the most holy of the states of worship, it is obligatory on every Muslim.   Allah Almighty has said: {so fear them not, but fear Me, if you are (true) believers.} [Surat Al-'Imrân 3:175]   {... 175   Transliteration: fala takhafoohum wakhafooni in kuntum mumineena   And He, the Almighty has said: {But for him who fears the standing before his Lord, there will be two Gardens (i.e. in Paradise)} [Surat Ar-Rahmân 55:46]   {وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ جَنَّتَانِ} الرحمن: 46   Transliteration: Waliman khafa maqama rabbihi jannatani     The definition of fear:   1.    It was said: fear is the expectation of punishment on the streams of breath.   2.    It was said: fear is the power of knowledge about the streams of provisions.   3.    It was said: fear is the fleeing of the heart from adversities when they are detected.   4.    It was said: fear is the grief happening to the soul when anticipating harm.     Some sayings about fear:   1.    Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn Musalamah al-Hadad An-Nisaburi said: "fear is a lamp in the heart, by which he sees what is within from the good and evil, and if you fear anyone you run away from him, but for Allah Glorified and Exalted, if you fear Him you run unto Him."   This who fears his Lord flees to Him   2.    Abu Suleiman said: "if fear departs from a heart; then it is ruined."   3.    Ibrahim ibn Sufyan said: "If fear inhabits the hearts it burns the spots of desires, and expels this worldly life out of it."   4.    And Zul-Nun said: "People are on the (straight) path as long as fear is still there, if fear leaves them then they strayed from the path."     The commended fear   The sincere commended fear: it is the fear that prevents its owner from violating the prohibition of Allah Glorified and Exalted, if it goes beyond that then despair and despondency are feared of him.   Abu 'Uthman Al-Hairi said: "the sincerity of fear is avoiding all sins both outwardly and inwardly."   Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya said: "the commended fear is what prevents you from violating the prohibitions of Allah."     The obligatory fear and the recommendable fear:   The obligatory fear: it is the fear that incites to performing the obligations and leaving the prohibited.   The recommendable fear: it is the fear that incites to performing the commended (ordered without obligations) and leaving the undesirable.     Combining fear, hope and love   The slave must combine these three pillars. Worshipping Allah through fear alone is the way of Al-Khawârij (the dissidents: a sect). They do not combine love and hope when worshipping Him, that is why they do not find the pleasure of worshipping nor do they desire it. They thus consider the Creator as an unjust ruler.   This leads to despair and despondency from the mercy of Allah, its far most end is to mistrust Allah and disbelieve in Him, Glorified and Exalted be He.   Worshipping Allah through hope alone is the way of Al-Murjites (the postponers); a sect who fell into vanity and false aspirations, they quit performing righteous deeds. The far most end is getting out from the pale of Islam.   Worshipping Allah through Love alone is the way of the extreme Sufis, who say: "We worship Allah not out of fear from His Fire, and not in anticipation of His Paradise, but it is love to Himself."   And this is a corrupt way which has disastrous effects, including feeling secure against the Plan of Allah. Its far most end is heresy, and getting out from the pale of Islam.   That is why the ancestors, may Allah have mercy on them, said a famous quotation which is:   "Whoever worships Allah out of love alone is a heretic, and whoever worships Allah out of fear alone is a dissident, and whoever worships Him out of hope alone is a Murjite (postponer), whoever worships Allah out of fear, love and hope is a monotheist believer."   Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "The heart in his walk to Allah Glorified and Exalted, is like a bird. love is its head, and fear and hope are its wings, when the head and wings are sound and healthy then the bird is a good flyer, when the head is cut off the bird dies, when the wings are lost the bird becomes vulnerable to any hunter and predator."     Which is to be predominant; fear or hope?   Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "the ancestors preferred that during good health the wing of fear predominates the wing of hope, but when leaving this worldly life the wing of hope predominates the wing of fear. This is the way of Abu Suleiman and others."   He also said: "as for the heart, fear should predominate, so as love. Love is the vehicle, hope is the guide, fear is the driver and Allah, by His grace and generosity, will make you reach your destination."     The divisions of fear:   1 - The secret fear: it is the fear of deification and worship, of getting closer, it is the fear that restrains its owner from disobeying Him Who he fears, lest He might hit him with poverty, murder, wrath, or taking away blessings as a result of what he has wished for, by His ability and will.   This division shall not be allocated but to Allah Glorified and Exalted, and it is considered the most honorable from the acts of worship, it is one of the greatest duties of the heart; nevertheless it is one of the pillars of worship. Whoever fears Allah in this manner is a sincere monotheist.   Whoever allocates it to other than Allah has committed the greater infidelity, in associating a peer to Allah in fear. It is the state of the polytheists who believe in their gods that belief, and that is why they intimidate the Auliyâ' of the Most Gracious (i.e. those who believe in the Oneness of Allah and fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which he has forbidden), and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)). Just as the people of Hûd, peace be upon him, Allah has said that they intimidated Hûd by their gods saying: {All that we say is that some of our gods (false deities) have seized you with evil (madness)."} [Surat Hûd: 54]   {إِن نَّقُولُ إِلَّا اعْتَرَاكَ بَعْضُ آلِهَتِنَا بِسُوءٍ...} هود: 54   Transliteration: In naqoolu illa iAAtaraka baAAdualihatina bisooin   It is also the case about the worshippers of graves. They fear the dead of the righteous, they even fear At-Taghût (all the false deities, it may be an idol, Satan, graves, stone, sun, star, angel, saints or any human being) as they fear Allah, even more. If you asked them to swear by Allah they give you all the oaths you want whether true or false but if the oath is to be by one of the buried in the grave he would not swear if it is a false oath.   This is only because he fears the buried person in the grave more than he fears Allah.   If anyone of them encounters any kind of injustice he asks those buried in the graves to alleviate it, if anyone of them is about to be unjust to someone and the wronged sought refuge in Allah, he would not help him. If he sought refuge with the dead or with his grave he would not harm him in any way.   2 – Fearing from the threat of Allah: which He has promised the disobedient. It is one of the highest ranks of faith. It has grades, ranks and divisions as has been previously mentioned.   3 – The forbidden fear: it is that man leaves his obligations of jihad or enjoining Al-Ma'rûf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden) with no excuse but the fear of people.   4 – Natural fear: like fearing the lion, an enemy, demolition and the like of which harm is feared. It is not dispraised. It is the fear mentioned by Allah about Moses, peace be upon him, in His words, Glorified and Exalted be He: {So he escaped from there, looking about in a state of fear.} [Surat Al-Qasas 28:21]   {فَخَرَجَ مِنْهَا خَائِفًا يَتَرَقَّبُ...} القصص: 21   Transliteration: Fakharaja minha khaifan yataraqqabu   And His words: {So Mûsâ (Moses) conceived fear in himself} [Surat Tâha 20:67]   {فَأَوْجَسَ فِي نَفْسِهِ خِيفَةً مُّوسَىٰ} طه: 67   Transliteration: Faawjasa fee nafsihi kheefatan moosa   Included in this section is the fear that precedes meeting the enemy, or precedes giving speeches. This is a normal fear which is praised if it incites its owner to be prepared and ready. It is disparaged if it takes its owner backwards to defeat and discourage.   5 – Imaginary fear: it is the fear that has no reason at all, or has a very weak reason. This fear is blameworthy, and it puts its owner in the category of the cowards, the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has sought refuge of cowardice, as it is one of the vile ethics.   Hence, full faith and true trust are the greatest things to ward off this kind of fear, and fill the heart with courage, the more powerful a person's faith is, fearing other than Allah will be removed from his heart, and the weaker his faith is, the more powerful his fear from other than Allah is.   Therefore, the cream of the believers and the powerful among them, their fear turns into serenity and tranquility because of the strength of their faith, the soundness of their belief and the integrity of their trust: {Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, "Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them." But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: "Allâh (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us). (173). So they returned with Grace and Bounty from Allâh. No harm touched them} [Surat Al-'Imrân 3:173-174]   {الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّـهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ ﴿١٧٣﴾ فَانقَلَبُوا بِنِعْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللَّـهِ وَفَضْلٍ لَّمْ يَمْسَسْهُمْ سُوءٌ...} آل عمران: 173-174   Transliteration: Allatheena qala lahumu alnnasu inna alnnasa qad jamaAAoo lakum faikhshawhum fazadahum eemanan waqaloo hasbuna Allahu waniAAma alwakeelu (173) Fainqalaboo biniAAmatin mina Allahi wafadlin lam yamsashum sooon    The close of our request will be: Al-Hamdu Lillâhi Rabbil-'Alamîn (all the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)). Peace be upon the Messengers and peace and blessings of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad.     Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Al-Hamad

Among the reasons of bosoms

Since 2012-11-18 Imam Ibn Al-Jawzy said: "I had a problem that caused me great constant grief, and I thought hard escape this grief by anyway but in vain. Then I remembered this verse {And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).   Among the reasons of bosoms; cheeriness openness Allah has created man in this life and facilitated to him reasons and causes for the rightness of his psychological and physical state, if he utilized them well and is acquainted with them. Indeed; man is in toil with the status of his self, in this worldly life {Verily, We have created man in toil} [Surat Al-Balad: 4].   {لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ} سورة البلد: 4       Transliteration: Laqad khalaqna alinsana fee kabadin     He is in suffering with himself, with the insinuations of Satan and with the hardships of life. In sometimes he gains victory and in other times he suffers defeat. He feels joy and sorrow; he laughs and weeps … etc. Indeed; life does not exempt anybody from its troubles.   People vary in standing for it; some stumble, so they become slow; others combat themselves, so they suffer, and the troubles of life may come to them one after another.   Among the troubles of life is a case many people suffer from (actually; if we said that nobody is safe from it, we would be far from truth) and they vary in this case; some take much and others take little.   Verily, breast’s constriction and the anxious and insomnia that sometimes afflict the Muslim is something could come to everyone of us; it may take long time with some people and take short time with others.   You see the man, after being afflicted with this case, depressed and vanquished has his mood altered and his self forsook him. He may loathe food and drink and fall in weep, sadness, estrangement and absence of mind. Furthermore; one of these symptoms may defeat him and lead him to complain to everyone he meets without exerting any effort for combating himself.   The person who sits with him, and everybody looks at him, sees him wearing clothes of grief and solicitude none knows them better than Allah. He surrenders totally to the devil; so he exposes to you despair, hopelessness and complaints could close many of the gates of relief and comfort. In fact, some of those people may follow Satan to extreme extents and be on the verge of taking steps that could change the whole course of their lives; such as divorcing wife, leaving their Job or changing residence with its consequences; furthermore, they may go to suicide, and this illustrates how much Satan controls them.   Grief has a material and immaterialist causes, and it may be unexpected with no known reason.   The point is that bosoms’ constriction sometimes makes the servant imprisoned in the jail of suspicions and obsessions; so, this poor person stays in the captive of Satan’s deceit, held by Satan’s insinuations and the weakness of his combat.   Dear Muslim brother and sister   Because many Muslims are afflicted with this case that affects their worship and behaviors; it became suitable to talk about the reasons that facilitate breast’s openness and move it from the haze that darkened its sight to where it could feel psychological comfort and inner tranquility.   Therefore, we could say (after seeking success from Allah Almighty) that the reasons of breast’s openness are many, and it is sufficient to mention here eight of these reasons hoping that they would include what are not mentioned.   • The first reason: Strength of monotheism   Among the greatest reasons for breast’s openness and expelling the grief, rather it is the greatest and biggest of all, is the strength of monotheism and putting trust in Allah Almighty. This is to believe unwavering belief that it is Allah alone (the Exalted and Glorious) Who brings good and prevents the evil, and to believe that there is none could prevent His destiny or alter His judgment; He is Just in His judgment; gives whomever He desires with His justice; and He wrongs no body. Therefore, the servant should care for filling up his heart with these believes and their consequences; then, Allah would make his grief vanish and grant him with security after his fear.   Imam Ibn Al-Qayim (may Allah Almighty mercy him) said: “Loving Allah Almighty, knowing Him, remembering Him all the time, having tranquility and serenity in His nearness and having Him as the Only One to love and fear and ask and trust in and deal with till it is He alone. Who seizes the servant’s interests and intentions. He is the Paradise of the worldly life and the felicity that has no like; it is the delight of the eye of those who love Allah and it is the life of those who know Him.”   • The second reason: Expecting the good from Allah   Expect the good from Allah Almighty by feeling that He would surly relief your grief and solicitude. When the servant expects good from His Lord, He would open to him the gates of His blessings from where he does not expect. Therefore, expect good from your Lord to see what pleases you. It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah Almighty said; ‘I am accordant to the think of My servant; if he expected good from Me, it is for him; and if he expected evil from Me, it is for him’” [Reported by Ahmad and Ibn Hibban, authentic].   «قال الله جل وعلا: أنا عند ظن عبدي بي، إن ظن خيرا فله، وإن ظن شرا فله» رواه الامام أحمد وابن حبان، صحيح   Thereupon, you should expect good from Allah and put your trust in Him; also, you should beware of expecting evil from Allah, because this is destructive. Allah Almighty says: {who think evil thoughts about Allâh: for them is a disgraceful torment. And the Anger of Allâh is upon them, and He has cursed them and prepared Hell for them - and worst indeed is that destination} [Surat Al-Fath: 6].   {وَيُعَذِّبَ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَالْمُنَافِقَاتِ وَالْمُشْرِكِينَ وَالْمُشْرِكَاتِ الظَّانِّينَ بِاللَّهِ ظَنَّ السَّوْءِ عَلَيْهِمْ دَائِرَةُ السَّوْءِ وَغَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَنَهُمْ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَهَنَّمَ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا} سورة الفتح: 6       Transliteration: WayuAAaththiba almunafiqeena waalmunafiqati waalmushrikeena waalmushrikati alththanneena biAllahithanna alssawi AAalayhim dairatu alssawi waghadiba Allahu AAalayhim walaAAanahum waaAAadda lahum jahannama wasaat maseeran     • The third reason: Invoking Allah much   Invoke Allah and repeat your asking from Him much. O you who felt constriction in the bosom and got stumbled in the troubles, raise the palms of supplication to your Lord and talk to Him about your grief and complaint and shed the tears between His Hands; and know, May Allah Almighty guard you, that He is more kind toward you than your mother, father, wife and children.   It is narrated that Omar Ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “A group of prisoners of war had been brought to the Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him), then a woman among this group was seen milking her breast searching (for her boy). Whenever she finds a boy, she takes him and sticks him to her stomach then breast feeds him. Thereupon, the Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said to us: ‘Do you think that this woman could cast her child in fire?’ We said: ‘No, as long as she is able to save him from that’ hereupon he said: ‘Allah is kinder toward His servants than the kindness of this woman toward her child’” [Agreed upon].   «قدم على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم سبي، فإذا امرأة من السبي قد تحلب ثديها تسقي، إذا وجدت صبيا في السبي أخذته، فألصقته ببطنها وأرضعته، فقال لنا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: ( أترون هذه طارحة ولدها في النار ). قلنا: لا، وهي تقدر على أن لا تطرحه، فقال: ( لله أرحم بعباده من هذه بولدها )» متفق عليه   • The fourth reason: Hastening to abstaining from the sins   You should watch yourself and hasten to abstaining from the sins. Do you want a way out while you are indulged in some sins?! How strange you are! You seek the needs of yourself from Allah although you forget your offenses. Did not you know (may Allah guide you) that committing the sins is a great gate for the coming of the disasters?! {And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much} [Ash-Shura: 30]   {وَمَا أَصَابَكُمْ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَنْ كَثِيرٍ} الشورى: 30        Transliteration: Wama asabakum min museebatin fabima kasabat aydeekum wayaAAfoo AAan katheerin     {(What is the matter with you?) When a single disaster smites you, although you smote (your enemies) with one twice as great, you say: "From where does this come to us?" Say (to them), "It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds)." And Allâh has power over all things} [Surat Al-Imran: 165]   {أَوَلَمَّا أَصَابَتْكُمْ مُصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُمْ مِثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْ أَنَّى هَذَا قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ} آل عمران: 165       Transliteration: Awalamma asabatkum museebatun qad asabtum mithlayha qultum anna hathaqul huwa min AAindi anfusikum inna Allaha AAala kulli shayin qadeerun         Al-Abbas Ibn Abdel-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed the prayer of Istisqa’ (rain) and said in his invocation: “O Allah, no punishment comes down unless there is a sin is committed, and it is not taken away unless there is repentance.” Imam Ibn Al-Qayim (may Allah Almighty have mercy on him) said: “Bosom’s constriction and heart’s hardness, dispersion, darkness, antagonisms, solicitudes, grief, sadness and fear are punishment for the sinful person. Actually, this is surly known by whoever has any sense and life. In fact, the solicitude, grief, sadness and breast’s constriction are speedy punishments, worldly fire and present hellfire. On the other hand, going to Allah Almighty, repentance, being pleased with Him and because of Him, having the heart filled with loving Him, remembering Him much, and feeling joy and pleasure because of knowing Him are speedy reward, paradise and life far above being compared with the life of kings …” (Al-Wabil As-Sayyib)     Therefore, you (may Allah guard you) should haste to reckoning yourself, reckoning of justice and truthfulness; you should reckon yourself the reckoning of the person who wants the pleasure of Allah and the good for Himself. If you were negligent in observing prayer or Zakat or any other act enjoined by Allah, or were perpetrator to what is made inviolable by Allah, You should hasten to reforming yourself and fighting yourself for achieving this reform, then you will see from your Lord what will open your breast and facilitate your affairs {As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allâh’s religion - Islâmic Monotheism). And verily, Allâh is with the Muhsinûn (good doers)."} [Surat Al-Ankabut: 69]   {وَٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّـهَ لَمَعَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ} العنكبوت: 69       Transliteration: Waallatheena jahadoo feenalanahdiyannahum subulana wainna Allaha lamaAAa almuhsineena     {And whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine} [Surat At-Talaq: 2-3]   {وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا (2) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ} الطلاق: 2-3   Transliteration: waman yattaqi Allaha yajAAal lahu makhrajan (2)Wayarzuqhu min haythu la yahtasibu   And whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter easy for him} [Surat At-Talaq: 4]   {وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا} الطلاق: 4   Transliteration: waman yattaqi Allaha yajAAal lahu min amrihi yusran    {and whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will expiate from him his sins, and will enlarge his reward} [Surat At-Talaq: 5]. 5   Transliteration: waman yattaqi Allaha yukaffir AAanhu sayyiatihi wayuAAthim lahu ajran    Therefore, you (may Allah guide you) should hasten to fearing Allah, and you will see from your Lord nothing except what pleases you by His will. Imam Ibn Al-Jawzy said: “I had a problem that caused me great constant grief, and I thought hard escape this grief by anyway but in vain. Then I remembered this verse {And whosoever fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty)} [Surat At-Talaq: 2];   {وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا} الطلاق: 2   Transliteration: waman yattaqi Allaha yajAAal lahu makhrajan        Thereupon, I realized that fearing Allah is reason for getting out any grief. Then; when I began applying fearing Allah, I found the way for getting out …” (Sayd Al-Khatir: 153)     • The fifth reason: Persistent observation to the obligatory acts of worship   You should observe the obligatory acts of worship persistently and observe much of the supererogatory prayers, fasts and charities; indeed this is one of the reasons of gaining the love of Allah Almighty. It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah said, 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave seeks proximity to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears with, and his sense of sight with which he sees with, and his hand with which he grips with, and his leg with which he walks with; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge) …” [Reported by Al-Bukhari].   «إن الله قال : من عادى لي وليا فقد آذنته بالحرب ، وما تقرب إلي عبدي بشيء أحب إلي مما افترضت عليه ، وما يزال عبدي يتقرب إلي بالنوافل حتى أحبه ، فإذا أحببته : كنت سمعه الذي يسمع به ، وبصره الذي يبصر به ، ويده التي يبطش بها ، ورجله التي يمشي بها ، وإن سألني لأعطينه ، ولئن استعاذني لأعيذنه...» رواه البخاري   • The sixth reason: Accompanying the righteous people   You should accompany the righteous people and have the pleasure of hearing their speeches and taking benefits from their sayings and guidance. In fact, sitting with such people leads to Allah’s satisfaction and Satan’s dissatisfaction. Therefore, when you sit with them and ask their advice, you will find openness and pleasure in your breast. Also, you should beware of loneliness and sitting with no friend, especially when you are in trouble; because Satan increases servant’s weakness and feebleness when he finds him alone. Satan is closer to the sole person and is further than the two persons and is not with the three persons; he is like the wolf which catches the sheep that abandons the flock.   The point is to care (may Allah Almighty help you) for not sitting alone. You should do your best to accompany the righteous pious people, attending the lectures and sermons and visiting the scholars and the seekers of knowledge; because these things give you geniality and leads to increasing your faith and knowledge.   • The seventh reason: Reciting the Holy Quran   Recite the Holy Quran in contemplation and deep thinking. In fact, this is one of the great reasons for relieving grief, solicitudes and sorrows. Reciting the Holy Quran brings rest in the heart and cheer in the bossom {Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allâh: verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest} [Surat Ar-Ra’d: 28].   {الَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُمْ بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ} الرعد: 28       Transliteration: Allatheena amanoo watatmainnu quloobuhum bithikri Allahi ala bithikri Allahi tatmainnu alquloobu     Imam Ibn Kathir (may Allah Almighty have mercy on him) said: “It means that their hearts feel goodness and relief in the nearness of Allah Almighty and feel tranquility when remembering Him and feel satisfaction with Him as Lord and Supporter. That is why He Almighty said: {verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest}; which means that He affirms that.”   Therefore, you (may Allah guard you) should care most for reciting it during some hours of the night and at the ends of the day, and you should ask your Lord to make your reciting reason for your heart’s cheeriness; because when the servant honestly moves closer to Allah, He bestows upon him from His great blessings {O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Qur’ân, enjoining all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences) which is in your breasts, - a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things) for the believers.} [Surat Yunus: 57]   {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ} يونس: 57       Transliteration: Ya ayyuha alnnasu qad jaatkum mawAAithatun min rabbikum washifaon lima fee alssudoori wahudan warahmatun lilmumineena   {And We send down of the Qur’ân that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islâmic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss} [Surat Al-Isra: 82]   {وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآَنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَا يَزِيدُ الظَّالِمِينَ إِلَّا خَسَارًا} الإسراء: 82       Transliteration: Wanunazzilu mina alqurani ma huwa shifaon warahmatun lilmumineena walayazeedu alththalimeena illa khasaran     • The eighth reason: Remembrances of the morning and evening   You should constantly say the remembrances of the morning and evening and sleeping and the remembrances of the day and night; because these remembrances fortify the Muslim servant, by the will of Allah Almighty, from the evil of men and jinn devils. Moreover, they give to the servant material and immaterial power, when he says them while feeling their meanings and believing in their fruits and consequences. Also, you (may Allah guard you) should care most for those remembrances that should be said at the time of facing grief or solicitude. Those remembrances include what is reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father too): “The Messenger of Allah (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) used to supplicate during the time of trouble (in these words): “There is no God except Allah, the Great, the Tolerant. There is no God except Allah, the Lord of the Magnificent Throne. There is no God except Allah, Lord of the Heavens and earth, Lord of the Majestic Throne.”   «لا إله إلا الله العظيم الحليم ، لا إله إلا الله رب العرش العظيم ، لا إله إلا الله رب السماوات ورب الأرض ، ورب العرش الكريم» متفق عليه   And what is reported by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) “Used to say much; ‘O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the solicitude, grief, incapability and laziness …”   «اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الهم والحزن، والعجز والكسل...» رواه البخاري   And it is narrated that Abdullah Ibn Mas’oud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) used to say when feeling grief or solicitude: ‘O You Who are Ever Living, Who sustains and protects all that exists, I seek refuge with Your mercy’” [Declared Hasan (good) by Al-Albani].   «يا حي ، يا قيوم ، برحمتك أستغيث» حسنه الألباني   And it is narrated on the authority of Abu Bakara (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah said: “The invocation of the anguished person is ‘O Allah, I seek Your mercy; so, do not let me to myself for a flicker of an eye, and reform to me all my affairs. There is no God except You’” [Reported by Abu Dawud and declared Hasan (good) by Al-Albani].   «دعوات المكروب اللهم رحمتك أرجو فلا تكلني إلى نفسي طرفة عين وأصلح لي شأني كله لا إله إلا أنت» رواه أبو داود وحسنه الألباني   And it is narrated on the authority of Abdullah Ibn Masoud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whenever a servant feels grief or solicitude and says: ‘O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your bondwoman, my forehead is in Your hand, Your ruling is accomplished upon me, Your judgment upon me is just. I ask You with every name You attributed to Yourself, reviled in Your Book, taught to one of Your creatures or kept to Yourself in the divine secret to make the Quran the pleasure of my heart, the light of my breast and the reliever of my grief and the end of my solicitude’ Allah will surly relief his grief and solicitude and substitute them with pleasure” [Reported by Ahmad in his Musnad and authenticated by Al-Albani]. This is in addition to many other remembrances are mentioned in this regard and its like.   And prayers and peace of Allah be upon our prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.     Compiled by: Sheikh, Abdel-Azeez As-Sadhan Reviving the Islamic heritage society
