People the Prophet ordered to be killed on the Conquest of Makkah
Question
Who were 10 people that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered to be killed even if they hold on to the curtain of the Ka'bah during the Opening of Makkah?
Answer
Praise be to Allaah.
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
The people whom the Prophet excluded from amnesty on the day of the Conquest of Makkah were more than 10 people and the biographers differed in opinion in regard to their number.
The Prophet gave orders to kill them even if they were found hanging to the curtains of the Ka’bah. This is due to their great crimes against Allaah, against the Prophet and against Islam, and because the Prophet feared that they would trigger tribulation between the people after the Conquest of Makkah.
The names of these people are as follows: ‘Abdullaah Ibn Abi Sarh, ‘Abdullaah Ibn Khatal and his two female singers: Fartanah and Qareebah, ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl, Huwayrith Ibn Nufayl (or Nuqayth), Miqyas Ibn Hubaabah, Habbaar Ibn Al-Aswad, Ka’b Ibn Zuhayr, Al-Haarith Ibn Hishaam, Zuhayr Ibn Umayyah, Saarah (a woman slave of some sons of Ibn ‘Abudul Muttalib), Safwaan Ibn Umayyah, Hind Bint ‘Utbah and Wahshi Ibn Harb.
Some of them were killed and some others repented and became Muslims, and the Prophet pardoned them, and they became good Muslims.
As-Seerah Al-Halabiyyah reads: “The Prophet excluded a group of people whom he ordered to be killed, and they were 11 men, [according to the book entitled Al-Imtaa’, they were 6 men and 4 women], even if they were found hanging to the curtains of the Ka’bah. Among whom were:
- Abdullaah Ibn Abi Sarh, who was a foster-brother of ‘Uthmaan Ibn ‘Affaan, and he was a knight of Bani ‘Aamer. He was also a noble man from Quraysh as he became a Muslim after that.
- ‘Abdullah Ibn Khatal and his two female singers,
- ‘Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl as he embraced Islam after that,
- Al-Huwayrith Ibn Nufayl,
- Miqyas Ibn Hubaabah,
- Habbaar Ibn Al-Aswad as he embraced Islam after that,
- Ka’b Ibn Zuhayr as he embraced Islam after that, and he authored a poem entitled “Baanat Su’aad”,
- Al-Haarith Ibn Hishaam as he embraced Islam after that, and he was the full brother of Abu Jahl,
- Zuhayr Ibn Umayyah as he embraced Islam after that,
- Saarah, who was a woman slave of some sons of Ibn ‘Abudulmutalib as she embraced Islam after that, and she lived until the caliphate of Abu Bakr . We have previously mentioned that she had carried the letter of Haatib Ibn Abi Balta’ah (to deliver it to the disbelievers of Quraysh on the Conquest of Makkah),
- Safwaan Ibn Umayyah as he embraced Islam after that,
- Hind Bint ‘Utbah, the wife of Abu Sufyaan, and
- Wahshi Ibn Harb as he embraced Islam after that.”
The As-Seerah Al-Halabiyyah also included Zuhayr Ibn Abi Sulma among these people, but it might be Zuhayr Ibn Umayyah who was previously mentioned, because Zuhayr Ibn Abi Sulmadied before the Prophetic Mission, as mentioned in the books of history.
Allaah Knows best.
