Misconception Surah 98 · Ayah 2
Muslim touching Qur'an without Wudu
Muslim touching Qur'an without Wudu
Question
What is the ruling on touching the Qur'an and reading it by a Muslim without having "Wudu" (but not in the state of Junub)? Is this permissible or I have to make Wudu to touch the Qur'an?
Answer
Praise be to Allah.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
Recitation of the Qur'an by heart without touching it does not need "Wudu". But being in the state of Wudu is compulsory for everyone who touches it. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning) in this concern {Which (that Book with Allah) None can touch but the purified." [56:79].
The purification referred to in this verse contain the purification from both ritual impurities, i.e. major impurity and minor impurity as well. The Prophet wrote a letter to the people of Yemen in which he mentioned "No one should touch the Qur'an except being in the state of ritual purity". [Athram, Darqutni].
And Imam Malik narrated it as Mursal Hadith. Allah knows best.
