May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.(1)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Abu Lahab: "Father of Flame", was the nickname of an uncle of the Prophet, from his fiery hot temper and his ruddy complexion. He was one of the most inveterate enemies of early Islam. When the Prophet called together Quraysh and his own kith and kin to come and listen to his preaching and his warning against the sins of his people, the "Father of Flame" flared up and cursed the Prophet, saying "Perdition to thee!" According to the English saying, "the causeless curse will not come". His words were futile, but his power and strength were equally futile. The star of Islam rose higher and higher every day, and its persecutors dwindled in strength and power. Many of the leaders of persecution perished at Badr, and Abu Lahab himself perished a week after Badr, consumed with grief and his own fiery passions. Verse 3 was prophetic of his end in this very life, though it also refers to the Hereafter.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Perish be the hands of Abu Lahab! And perished be he!

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

And from his narration on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that he said regarding the interpretation of Allah's saying (The power of Abu Lahab will perish): '(The power of Abu Lahab will perish) this is because when Allah said to His Prophet (pbuh) (And warn your tribe of near kindred [26: 214]) he called them and said: “Say: there is no god but Allah” and his uncle-the brother of his father from their mother's side-'Abd al-'Uzza whose agnomen was Abu Lahab said: “May you perish! Is this why you summoned us?” Allah then revealed His saying (The power of Abu Lahab will perish) He says: the hand of Abu Lahab is deprived of all good (and he will perish) he lost himself by rejecting belief in Allah's divine Oneness.

Tafseer Jalalain

Perish, ruined be, the hands of Abū Lahab, in other words, all of him — the use of ‘hands’ here to denote [all of] him is figurative, and is because most actions are performed by them; the statement is an invocation — and perish he!, may he be ruined! (this [tabba] is a predicate, as where one says, ahlakahu’Llāhu wa-qad halak, ‘God destroyed him and he indeed is destroyed’. When the Prophet threatened him with the chastisement, he said, ‘If what my brother’s son says is true, then I shall ransom [myself] from it with my wealth and sons!’; so the following was revealed:

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Name and Nickname of Abu Lahab Abu Lahab [Father of Flame] was the Nickname of 'Abd-ul-'Uzza, one of the sons of 'Abdul-Muttalib. As he was ruddy in complexion, he was nicknamed Abu Lahab [Father of Flame]. The Qur’an did not mention his real name, because it smacked of paganism, and the last element 'lahab' [Flame] in the nickname has also nexus with the flame of Hell. This person was the inveterate enemy and persecutor of the Holy Prophet, and violently opposed Islam. Whenever the Holy Prophet invited the people to Islamic Faith, he would stand up and cry lie to his message. [Ibn Kathir] Cause of Revelation ,, ,, 11 I - It is recorded in the two Sah;hs that when the verse; (Warn your closest relatives - 26:214) was revealed, the ~ol~ Prophet $& ascended the mount Safa and cried out to the tribe of Quraish in a manner that was known among them for warning of an attack by the enemy. Some narratives maintain that he called the different Makkan clans by name, the clan of BanC 'Abd Munaf, Banu 'Abdul-Muttalib and others. All the clans of Quraish gathered around him, and he said to them: 'If I were to tell you that the enemy is about to attack you in the morning or in the evening, would you believe me?' They all unanimously replied in the affirmative. Then he said: 'Verily, I am a Warner sent to you before the coming of a severe torment (as a result of disbelief or paganism). Abu Lahab then responded: 'Ruin may seize you ! Is it for this purpose that you have called us together?' and picked up a stone to hit him. Thus this Surah was revealed. Verse [111:1] (Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, I and perish he!) The word yad literally means a 'hand'. Because hands play a very important role in all of human works and actions, often yad (hand) refers to the human person, as in the phrase (All this is due to what your hands have sent forth...22:10). Baihaqi has recorded on the authority of Sayyidna Ibn 'Abbas & that one day Abii Lahab said to the people that Muhammad says that such-and-such a thing will happen after death. Then, pointing to his hands, said that none of those things have come into these hands; then he addressed his hands and said: (Perish you! I do not see any of the things Muhammad said in you.) Therefore, the Qur'an attributes his destruction to his hands. The verb tabba is derived from tabab which means 'to perish'. In verse [I], the first sentence (Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab) is 2.Y in the form of a prayer invoking or imprecating destruction upon Abu Lahab, and the second sentence wa tabba is the declarative sentence prophesying the consequence of the invocation. The first sentence was invoked against him to satisfy the indignation of the Muslims, because when Abu Lahab imprecated destruction upon the Holy Prophet s, it was the desire of the Muslims that imprecation be invoked against him. Allah thus fulfilled their desire, and also informed them that the invocation has taken effect and he perished. Seven days after the battle of Badr, he developed a terrible case of plague because of which people avoided him. They regarded the disease as infectious and were afraid that it might be transmitted by contact, so they forced him to live in an isolated house, and they did not come into contact with him at all. He at last died in this state. His dead body lay untouched in his house for three days. When his body began to rot giving out unbearable stench, people taunted his sons, and they hired laborers to take it away and bury it. They dug a pit in the ground, pushed his body into it with a stick and covered it with stones. [Bayan-ul-Quran from Ruh].

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Abu Lahab was one of the uncles of the Holy Prophet When the Holy Prophet was directed by verse 26:214 to invite his clan to Islam, he ascended to the mount of Safa and cried out to the tribe of Quraish in a manner that was known among them for warning the tribe of an expected attack from an enemy. All the clans of Quraish assembled around him, and he said to them, “If I were to tell you that the enemy is about to attack you, would you believe me?” All of them replied in affirmative. Then he said, “I am a warner sent to you before a severe torment (if you continue worshipping idols.)” Abu Lahab responded, ‘Perish you! Is it for this purpose that you have called us together?’ This Surah was revealed in this background.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

The Holy Prophet's father Abdullah had ten brothers, all the children of his father Abdul Muttalib. One of these ten uncles of the Holy Prophet was called Abu Lahab. His real name was Abdul Uzza. When the Holy Prophet announced his Prophethood, Abu Lahab and his wife were among his staunchest opponents. When Allah revealed the verse: "Warn your closest relatives", The Holy Prophet mounted the hill of Safa and called various tribes of the Quraysh like the Banu Fahar, the Banu Adi, etc by name. Their response was so overwhelming that those who could not present themselves sent someone to represent them. When they had all gathered, he asked them, "Will you people believe me If I told you that an army of horsemen were advancing to attack you from behind this mountain?" They replied, "We shall certainly believe you. We have never known you to be untruthful "The Nabi (Prophet) then took the names of many relatives present and warned them about the life after death. The Holy Prophet then said to them,"Purchase your souls (by carrying out deeds that will save you from Hell). I cannot save you from Allah's punishment. O children of Abd Manaf I cannot save you from Allah's punishment. O Abbas bin Abdil Muttalib! I cannot save you from Allah's punishment. O (my aunt) Safiyya! I cannot save you from Allah's punishment. O Fatima the daughter of Muhammad! Ask whatever you please from my wealth. I cannot save you from Allah's punishment." Addressing the entire assembly, the Holy Prophet it recited the verse "He is but a Warner to you before the advent of a severe punishment." The Holy Prophet it then said to them, "I am warning you of a severe punishment do not believe in what I preach to you)." Thereupon Abu Lahab said, "May you be destroyed forever. Have you gathered us for this?" It was then that Surah Lahab was revealed, where Allah says, "May the hands of Abu Lahab be shattered and he be destroyed. Neither his wealth nor the things he earned shall avail him." [ Bukhari v. 2 p. 702] A narration of Muslim (v. 1 p. 14) states that the Holy Prophet addressed the Quraysh individually and collectively. Addressing the Banu Ka'b bin Luway, the Banu Murra bin Ka'b, the Banu Abdush Shams, Banu Abd Manaf and the Banu Hashim, he said, "Save yourselves from Hell I cannot save you from Allah's punishment." It was then that Abu Lahab said what he did and Surah Lahab was revealed. Abu Lahab received the title of "Abu Lahab" ("Father of flames") because he was very handsome and had a reddish complexion that resembled the colour of flames. When Abu Lahab cursed the Holy Prophet fUj u* it Allah Ta'ala used the word "Lahab" (flames, which was a source of pride to him) to describe the disgraceful punishment that he will suffer in the Hereafter. Allah describes the fire of Hell as "Dhdta Lahab" (translated above as' flaming fire) Allah Ta'ala says, "May the hands of Abu Lahab be shattered and he be destroyed." Allama Qastalani it has written that Abu Lahab's hands are mentioned here because he used his hands to throw stones at the Holy Prophet it, causing his blessed heels to bleed. Allah Ta'ala mentions that before entering the flaming fire, Abu Lahab will be destroyed. This occurred in this world when he developed a terrible case of small pox which made people avoid him. People were so afraid that the disease might be contagious that they forced him to live in an isolated house and they did not associate with him at all. He finally died in this state. His corpse lay untouched in the house for three days, eventually, when people started taunting his sons, they managed to get someone to place his body against a wall. They then stoned the corpse until it crumbled and was buried beneath the stones. ["Al Biddya wan Nihaya" v. 3 p. 309] "Ar Rowdhul Unf states that Abu Lahab's corpse was bound to a stake and cast down a pit. Thereafter, stones were thrown on top of it. There is presently a mountain near Makkah where tradition has it that Abu Lahab was thrown there. The mountain is also called the mountain of Abu Lahab.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

His real name was 'Abd al-'Uzza, and he was called Abu Lahab on account of his glowing, ruddy complexion. Lahab means the flame of fire, and Abu Lahab the one with a flaming, fiery face. His being mentioned here by his nickname (Kunyat), instead of his real name, has several reasons. First, that he was better known by his nickname than by his real name; second, that the Qur'an did not approve that he should be mentioned by his polytheistic name `Abd al 'Uzza (slave of 'Uzza); third, that his kunyat goes well with the fate that has been described of him in this Surah.
Some commentators have translated tabbat yada Abi Lahab to mean: "May the hands of Abu Lahab be broken", and tabby to mean: “may he perish" or "he perished". But this, in fact, was not a curse which was invoked on him, but a prophecy in which an event taking place in the future, has been described in the past tense, to suggest that its occurrence in the future is certain and inevitable.
In actual fact, at last the same thing happened as had been foretold in this Surah a few years earlier. Breaking of the hands obviously does not imply breaking of the physical hands, but a person's utterly failing in his aim and object for which he has exerted his utmost. And Abu Lahab indeed had exerted his utmost to defeat and frustrate the message of Islam presented by the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace). But hardly seven or eight years after the revelation of this Surah most of the big chiefs of Quraish, who were a party with Abu Lahab in his hostility to Islam, were killed in the Battle of Badr. When the news of the defeat reached Makkah, he was so shocked that he could not survive for more than seven days. His death occurred in a pitiable state. He became afflicted with malignant pustule and the people of his house left him to himself, fearing contagion. No one came near his body for three days after his death, until the body decomposed and began to stink. At last, when the people began to taunt his sons, according to one tradition, they hired some Africans, who lifted his body and buried it.
According to another tradition, they got a pit dug out and threw his body into it by pushing it with wood, and covered it up with earth and stones. His utter failure became manifest when the religion which he had tried his utmost to impede and thwart, was accepted by his own children. First of all, his daughter, Darrah, migrated from Makkah to Madinah and embraced Islam; then on the conquest of Makkah, both his sons, `Utabh and Mu`attab, came before the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) through the mediation of Hadrat `Abbas, believed and took oath of allegiance to him

The phrase ma kasab [what he earned] could refer to the profits that accrued to him from investment of his wealth in business, and it could also imply 'children', for the children of a person are also referred to (in Arabic) as his earning. Sayyidah 'Aishah & reports that the Messenger of Allah said: "The best and the purest thing a man eats is from his earnings and his children are part of his earnings". This means that eating from the earnings of one's children is tantamount to eating from one's own earnings. [Qurtubi Therefore, Sayyidah Aishah &, Mujahid, 'Ata, Ibn Sirin and others interpret ma kasab [what he earned] as referring to 'children'. Allah had granted AbE Lahab abundant wealth and many children, and these two factors led him to be ungrateful, and caused him to be proud and arrogant. Sayyidna Ibn 'Abbas & says that when the Messenger of Allah called his people to faith and warned them about the Divine punishment, Abii Lahab said: "Even if what my nephew says is true, I will save myself from the painful torment on the Day of Judgement with my wealth and my children." Thus Allah revealed verse, that is, when the Divine torment seized him in this world, neither his wealth nor his children benefited him!

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

According to some reports, Abu Lahab bragged that if the torment of the Hereafter was true, he had enough wealth and children to save himself from it.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah Ta'ala says, "Neither his wealth nor the things he earned shall avail him." Abu Lahab was extremely wealthy and he also had many children. Commentators mention that "the things he earned" refer to his children because The Holy Prophet said, "Your children are from the things you earn." Therefore, the wealth and children of Abu Lahab will be useless to him in the Hereafter. "Ma'dlimut Tanzil" states that when the Holy Prophet told the Quraysh that they should save themselves from Hell, Abu Lahab told the people that if he were ever to suffer punishment on account of his disbelief, he would ransom himself with his wealth. It was in response to this that Allah Ta'ala revealed the verse: "Neither his wealth nor the things he earned shall avail him."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Abu Lahab was a stingy, materialistic man. Ibn Jarir has stated that once in the pre-Islamic days he was accused of having stolen two golden deer from the treasury of the Ka'bah. Though later the deer were recovered from another person, the fact that he was accused of stealing indicates the opinion the people of Makkah held of him. About his riches Qadi Rashid bin Zubair writes in his Adh-Dhakha'ir wat-Tuhaf. He was one of the four richest men of the Quraish, who owned one qintar (about 260 oz) of gold each. His love of wealth can be judged from the fact that when on the occasion of the battle of Badr the fate of his religion was going to be decided for ever, and all the Quraish chiefs had personally gone to fight, he sent `As bin Hisham to fight on his own behalf, telling him: This is in lieu of the debt of four thousand dirhams that you owe to me. Thus. he contrived a plan to realize his debt, for 'As had become bankrupt and there was no hope of the recovery of the debt from him.
Some commentators have taken ma kasaba in the meaning of the earning, i.r. the benefits that accrued to him from his wealth were his kasab(earning), and some other commentators have taken it to imply children, for the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) has said that a man's son also is his kasab (earning). (Abu Da'ud, Ibn Abi Hatim). Both these meanings fully correspond to the fate met by Abu Lahab. For when he was afflicted with the malignant pustule, his wealth availed him nothing, and his children also left him alone to die a miserable, wretched death. They did not even bury him honorably. Thus, within a few years the people witnessed how the prophecy which had been made in this Surah about Abu Lahab was literally fulfilled.

He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame(3)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame!

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Soon he shall be burnt in a flaming fire (a pun on the meaning of Abu Lahab,”father of flames”)

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(He will be plunged) in the Hereafter (in flaming fire) which will kindle and rage with flames,

Tafseer Jalalain

: He will [soon] enter a Fire of flames, that is to say, [a fire that is] flaming and ignited (this [statement] is the source of his nickname, [which was given to him] on account of his flaming reddish fair face),

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

That is, either on the Day of Judgment or immediately after his death, while in grave, he will be pushed into the blazing fire. There is a rhetorical relationship between Abu Lahab and dhata lahab [full of flames].

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

He will soon enter a Fire, full of flames

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah continues, "He shall soon enter the flaming fire and his wife as well." Abu Lahab's wife was a woman called Arwa, who was commonly known as Umm Jamil. She was the sister of Abu Sufyan and like her husband, vehemently opposed the Holy Prophet Although every disbeliever will enter Hell, Abu Lahab and his wife have been specifically named as inmates of Hell, indicating that that they were a really evil couple. As long as the world exists, people shall be reciting this Surah, proclaiming the despised nature of these two and announcing their final abode. May Allah Ta'ala save us from Hell. Amin.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Surely, he will be cast into a Flaming Fire

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation Sahih International

And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.(4)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Abu Lahab's wife was a woman of equally passionate spite and cruelty against the sacred person of the Prophet. She used to tie bundles of thorns with ropes of twisted palm-leaf fibre and carry them and strew them about on dark nights in the paths which the Prophet was expected to take, in order to cause him bodily injury. "To carry firewood" may also be symbolical for carrying tales between people to embroil them. This was also one of her vices. But she was laying up for herself another kind of Fire and another kind of Rope, the Fire of Punishment, and the Rope of Slavery to Evil. Thus does Evil prepare its own fate. This is the general lesson of sustained craft and cruel wrongdoing recoiling on the wrongdoer's head. See also Introduction to this Surah.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

and his wife, the carrier of firewood(to put thorns in the Prophet’s path and slander him - the word firewood was used by the Arabs to allude to slander and backbiting).

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And his wife) Umm Jamilah Bint Harth Ibn Umayyah with him, (the wood carrier) the talebearer who used to go between the Muslims and disbelievers and spread lies among them about each other; it is also said that she used to throw thorns in the way of the mosque whenever she saw the Prophet (pbuh) heading that way.

Tafseer Jalalain

and his wife (wa’mra’atuhu is a supplement to the person [of the verb] yaslā, ‘he will enter’, separated by the clause of the direct object and its qualification) — and this was Umm Jamīl — the carrier (read hammālatu or hammālata) of firewood, cactus and thorns which she used to fling into the path of the Prophet (s).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

As Abu Lahab was a vehement enemy of the Holy Messenger, his wife too was supportive of her husband in his disbelief, rejection, obstinacy, and in persecuting the Holy Prophet. She was a sister of Abu Sufyan, and daughter of Harb Ibn 'Umayyah. Her nickname was Umm Jamil The Qur'an makes plain in this verse that this wretched woman will also roast with her husband in the fire of Hell. She is described as “hammalatul hatab” which literally means 'the carrier of firewood'. Idiomatically, Arabs use this expression to refer to a 'tale-bearer ', that is, one who gathers pieces of gossip and carries them between individuals and families in order to ignite the fires of discord and enmity between people, exactly as one would gather firewood to kindle the fire. This telltale woman improperly carried information concerning the private affairs of the Messenger of Allah g, and the blessed Companions in an attempt to ignite and instigate trouble. In this verse too, the phrase 'the carrier of firewood' has been interpreted by Sayyidna Ibn 'Abbas &, Mujahid, 'Ikrimah and a group of commentators to mean that 'She was a tale-bearer' while Ibn Zaid, Dahhak and other commentators retain it in its original sense, and explain that she literally used to collect thorny branches from the jungle, and place them in the path of the Messenger of Allah in order to harm him - hence the description: 'carrier of firewood'. [Qurtubi, Ibn Kathir]. Some scholars explain that just as she used to help her husband in this world to promote disbelief and tyranny and to assist him in harming the Messenger of Allah, she will add to the torment of her husband in the Hereafter. She will collect the branches of zaqqiim and other trees and add them as fuel to the fire of Hell in which her husband would be roasting. [Ibn Kathir]. Tale-Bearing: A Gravely Major Sin It is recorded in the two Sahihs that the Messenger of Allah is reported to have said that a tale-bearer (to harm others) will not enter Paradise. Fudail Ibn 'Iyad says that there are three evil deeds of man that destroy all his righteous actions . They are: [I] backbiting; [2] tale-bearing; and [3] lying. 'Ata Ibn Sa’ib says that he asked Sha'bi; about the Prophetic Tradition in which the Messenger of Allah is reported to have said: "Three types of people will not enter Paradise: [I] a murderer; [2] a tale-bearer; and [3] a trader who is involved in usury." 'Ata says that I cited this Tradition to Sha'bi and asked him in a surprising tone that the Holy Prophet has equated 'a tale-bearer' with a murderer and a usurer. He replied: "Indeed, tale-bearing is the root cause of murder and usurpation of wealth." [Qurtubil

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

The word ‘wicked’ is though not available in the text in express terms, the nasb on hammdlah„ which is termed in Arabic grammar as nasb \aladh-dhamm carries this meaning. She was Umm Jamil. Like her husband, she was a staunch enemy of the Holy Prophet $g. According to some reports, she used to collect thorny branches from the jungle, and place them in the way of the Holy Prophet $jg. This is one explanation of the phrase ‘carrier of firewood’. According to other exegetes, ‘carrier of firewood’ is an expression used by the Arabs for a person who sows dissension and ignites the fire of enmity between people by backbiting. She used to narrate unfounded stories about the Holy Prophet to ignite the fire of hatred against him.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Describing Abu Lahab's wife, Allah says, "( Evil is) that woman who carries
firewood." In addition to the many thingsshe did to harm the Holy Prophet, one of her worst acts was that she used to collect thorny branches and
place them on the road the Holy Prophet it used. Although the Holy
Prophet could easily avoid them, the act indicates her sadistic
nature and enmity for the Holy Prophet. She left no stone unturned
to harm the Holy Prophet and even did things that caused him the
slightest harm.
The following interpretations of this verse have also been reported:
⦁ Despite her wealth, she was extremely miserly and used to carry the firewood by herself.
⦁ She used to carry tales, symbolized by firewood because these tales ignited the fire of discord and enmity between people.
⦁ “The firewood is symbolic of the sins she committed:
⦁ Just as she assisted her husband to harm the Holy Prophet, she will assist him in punishing him in Hell by carrying firewood to fuel the flames burning him. [Ibn Kathir]

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Her name was Arwa' and her nickname (kunyat) Umm Jamil. She was sister of Abu Sufyan and was no less bitter than her husband, Abu Lahab, in her enmity to the Holy Messenger (upon whom be peace) Hadrat Abu Bakr's daughter, Hadrat Asma', has related that when this Surah was revealed, and Umm Jamil heard it, she was filled with rage and went out in search of the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace). She carried a handful of stones and she was crying some verses of her own, satirizing the Holy Prophet. She came to the Ka`bah, where the Holy Prophet was sitting with Hadrat Abu Bakr. The latter said: "O Messenger of Allah, there she comes and I fear lest she should utter something derogatory to you." The Holy Prophet replied: "She will not see me." The same thing happened. She could not see the Holy Prophet although he was there. She said to Hadrat Abu Bakr: "I hear that your Companion has satirized me." Hadrat Abu Bakr replied: "No, by the Lord of this house, he has not satirized you." Hearing this she went off. (lbn Abi Hatim, Ibn Hisham; Bazzar has related an incident on the authority of Hadrat 'Abdullah bin `Abbas also, which closely resembles this). What Hadrat Abu Bakr meant was that she had not been satirized by the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace), but by Allah Himself.
The words in the original are hammalat al-hatab, which literally mean: "carrier of the wood". The commentators have given several meanings of it. Hadrat `Abdullah bin `Abbas, Ibn Zaid, Dahhak and Rabi` bin Anas say: She used to strew thorns at the Holy Prophet's door in the night; therefore, she has been described as carrier of the wood. Qatadah, Ikrimah Hasan Bari, Mujahid and Sufyan Thauri say: She used to carry evil tales and slander from one person to another in order to create hatred between them; therefore, she has been called the bearer of wood idiomatically. Sa`id bin Jubair says: The one who is loading himself with the burden of sin, is described idiomatically in Arabic as: Fulan-un Yahtatibu ala zahri bi (so and so is loading wood on his back); therefore, hummalat al-hatab means: “The one who carries the burden of sin.” Another meaning also which the commentators have given is: she will do this in the Hereafter, i.e. she will bring and supply wood to the fire in which Abu Lahab would be burning.

(Will have upon her neck a halter of palm fibre) and this halter strangulated her and she died as a result; it is also said that this means: she will have an iron chain on her neck'. And of the surah in which Unity is mentioned, which is all Meccan and consists of 4 verses, 15 words and 47 letters:

Tafseer Jalalain

with a rope of palm-fibre around her neck (fī jīdihā hablun min masadin is a circumstantial qualifier referring to hammālata’l-hatab, which in turn is [either] a description of imra’atahu, ‘his wife’, or the predicate of an implied subject). Meccan or Medinese, consisting of 4 or 5 verses. The Prophet (s) was asked about his Lord and the following was revealed:

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The masd with the letter-s-bearing sukiin [quiescence or rest] is an infinitive which means 'to twist rope or cord, or to twist it strongly and tightly'. If the word is read as mGEd with the letters m-s bearing fatha [= a-a], the word refers to fibres. It is also a rope made of 'twisted fibres of palm tree' or 'tightly braided fibres of coconut tree' or 'cord that has been woven strongly' or 'coil or cable formed by winding iron strands together'. [al-QamTisI. Some scholars have preferred to translate it specifically as 'a rope made of twisted fibres of palm tree' and no other string or twine. This is in conformity with the general usage of the Arabs. Basically, it refers to any string or twine or rope or cord or coil or cable formed by intertwining strands of any material. In keeping with this general sense of the word, Sayyidna Ibn 'AbbZs &, 'Urwah Ibn Zubair & and others said that in this context the phrase & "rope of masad" refers to 'rope formed by twisting iron strands'. This will be her condition in Hell where an iron-collar will be in her neck. Sayyidna Mujahid & interprets min masad as min had;d, that is, 'of iron'. [Mazharll. Sha'bi, Muqatil and other commentators have taken the phrase min masad to refer to 'a rope made of twisted fibres of palm tree' and said that Abii Lahab and his wife were extremely wealthy and were looked upon as leaders of their nation but, on account of his wife's mean disposition and miserliness, she used to collect firewood from the jungle, bind them together with a rope, place the bundle on her head and put its rope round her neck, so that it might not fall from her head. This practice of hers one day led to her destruction. She had a bundle of wood on her head and the rope in her neck. She felt tired and sat down. Then fell, was choked and died. According to this second interpretation, the verse describes her mean disposition and the disastrous consequences of her sadistic behavior. [Mazhari]. However, such a conduct in Abu Lahab's family, especially of his wife, was hardly conceivable; therefore, most commentators have preferred the first interpretation. Allah knows best!

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

This is the position in which she will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

: Allah says further about her, "Around her neck is a string of palm fibre." Some commentators have stated that this string will be around her neck to carry the firewood. However, this interpretation does not seem appropriate because people do not tie a bundle of firewood around their necks. Other commentators have mentioned that she used to wear an extremely expensive necklace which she told people she would spend to oppose the Holy Prophet. In lieu of this, she will be made to wear a necklace of fire in Hell which will resemble a string made of palm fibre. Some commentators have translated "string of palm fibre" as "a woven string NOTE: The Holy Prophet had four daughters. Sayyidah Zaynab was the eldest and Sayyidah Fatima ito was the youngest. Between these two there were Sayyidah Umm Kulthum and Sayyidah Ruqayya. The Holy Prophet ( married the three eldest daughters before announcing his Nubuwat (Prophethood). Sayyidah Zaynab was married to Abul As bin Rabi while Sayyidah Umm Kulthum and Sayyidah Ruqayya were married to Utba and Utayba, two sons of Abu Lahab. When Surah Lahab was revealed, the two had not yet started living with their husbands. Abu Lahab told his sons that they either divorce the Holy Prophet's pJL- jdaughters or completely disassociate themselves from him. While one son merely pronounced the divorce before the Holy Prophet pi-j AJLP i»\, the other insulted the Holy Prophet Ju* as well. In response to his abuse, The Holy Prophet iu\ ju prayed, "O Allah! Release one of Your beasts on him." Although not a Muslim, Abu Lahab was alarmed to hear this curse. He said to his son, "You will be unable to escape this." Abu Lahab once took this son along with him to Sham (syria ). He told the people in their caravan to take good care of his son because he feared the curse of the Holy Prophet. When they camped at a place where there were many wild animals, they piled all their goods, making a small hillock. The son was then placed on top to sleep while the rest of the people slept around the pile. However, no plan can thwart Allah's decree. That night a lion came to their camp and, sniffing the faces of all those asleep, left them unharmed. It then leapt right on top of the pile, recognised its victim and snapped his head off. The condemned man'sshriek was useless because none could save him. " Jam'ul Fawk' id" reports that the doomed son was Utayba, Sayyidah Umm Kulthum's husband. It is also reported that when the caravan camped at a placed called Zarqa, a lion circled the camp. When Utayba saw it, he said, "Alas! This lion will not leave without killing me according to Muhammad's curse. Sitting where he was, Muhammad has killed me here." Thereafter, the lion left to return at night to complete its task. "Dalailun Nabuwwah" ( p. 163) reports that the ill-fated son was Utba. It is mentioned in this book that the people of the caravan heard the roar of a lion as they travelled. Hearing this, Utba trembled with fear. The others asked him, "Why are you trembling so? You need not worry so much because we all share the same fate." He replied, "Muhammad had cursed me. By Allah! There is none beneath the sky as truthful as he ' That night, he did not touch his supper. The people of the caravan slept around him that night and the lion arrived, growling softly. Sniffing at all the others, it left them and attacked only Utba. The doomed man's last words were, '7 always maintained that Muhammad was the most truthful" Abu Lahab also mentioned, "I had always known that this son would never escape the curse of Muhammad. Although the narration of "Dalailun Nabuwwah" mentions that this son was Utba, the correct opinion is that he was Utayba because reliable books like "Al Isabah", "Asadul Ghaba" and "Isti'ab" all mention that Utba became a Muslim. Hafidh Ibn Hajar A -U &\ ^ writes in "Al Isdba" that when the Muslims conquered Makkah, The Holy Prophet asked Sayyidina Abbas "Where are your brother (Abu Lahab's) sons Utba and Mu'attab?" When Sayyidina Abbas said that the two had left Makkah, The Holy Prophet asked

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The word used for her neck is jid, which in Arabic means a neck decorated with an ornament. Sa`id bin al-Musayyab, Hasan Basri and Qatadah say that she wore a valuable necklace and used to say: "By Lat and `Uzza, I will sell away this necklace and expend the price to satisfy my enmity against Muhammad (Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)." That is why the word jid has been used here ironically, thereby implying that in Hell she would have a rope of palm-fibre round her neck instead of that necklace upon which she prides herself so arrogantly. Another example of this ironical style is found at several places in the Qur'an in the sentence: Bashshir-hum bi-`adhab-in alima "Give them the good news of a painful torment."
The words babl-um min-masad have been used for the rope which will be put round her neck, i e. it will be a rope of the masad kind. Different meanings of this have been given by the lexicographers and commentators. According to some, masad means a tightly twisted rope; others say that: masad is the rope made from palm-fibre; still others say that it means the rope made from rush, or camel-skin, or camel-hair. Still another view is that it implies a cable made by twisted iron strands together.
