Translation Sahih International

By those [angels] who extract with violence(1)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The beginning of this Surah may be compared with the beginning of S. 77. A translator's task in such passages is extremely difficult. He has to contend, again and again, with verities of a realm beyond man's normal range of experience expressed in elliptical language and he has to render them in another language with words of precision intelligible to readers. It is therefore necessary for him to put in part of the Commentary in the Translation in such cases. .
The evidence of five things is here invoked in verses 1-5, in order to lead to the conclusion in verse 6 and those following. Or, if we treat verses 3-5 as three stages of the same thing, there are three things to be considered in five stages. What are they? And what is the conclusion? See the following notes.
There is much difference of opinion among the Commentators as to the five things or beings mentioned in these verses. I follow the general opinion in my interpretation, which is that angels are referred to as the agency which in their dealings with mankind show clearly Allah's Justice, Power, and Mercy, which again point to the Judgement to come, as a certainty which none can evade. The first point, referred to in this verse, is that the souls of the wicked are loath to part with their material body at death, but their will will not count: their souls will be wrenched out into another world. Who will then deny Resurrection and Judgement?

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

By those angels who violently pull out the souls of the wrongdoers.[

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Those Who Drag Forth (al-Nazi‘at )And of the surah in which Those Who Drag Forth are mentioned,

Tafseer Jalalain

By those that wrest, [by] the angels who wrest the souls of disbelievers, violently;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

I swear by those (angels) who pull out (the souls of the infidels) vigorously

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

I swear by those (angels) who pull out (the souls of the infidels) with extreme force

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

These verses speak about the advent of Judgment Day. Allah begins by taking oaths of several types of angels to assert that "The day (shall certainly take place) when that which shakes shall shake." Allah says,"By the oath of those angels who harshly extract souls “ The Emphasis in this verse denotes that these angels mercilessly wrench the soul from every portion of the dying person's body, causing excruciating pain. Allah then swears by those angels "who untie knots *.This refers to those angels who remove souls very gently from the body. Commentators state that the first group of angels extract the souls of the disbelievers while the second group extract the souls of the believers.Of course, there are times when Allah causes the death of a believer to be difficult so that he may earn an exalted status in the Hereafter

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Here, the object for which an oath has been sworn by beings having five qualities has not been mentioned; but the theme that follows by itself leads to the conclusion that the oath has been sworn to affirm that the Resurrection is a certainty, which must come to pass, when all dead men shall be resurrected. Nor is there any mention as to what are the beings possessed of the qualities. However, a large number of the Companions and their immediate successors and most of the commentators have expressed the opinion that they are the angels. Hadrat `Abdullah bin Mas`ud, Hadrat `Abdullah bin `Abbas, Masruq, Sa`id bin Jubair, Abu salih Abud-Duha and Suddi; say that "those who pluck out from the depths and those who draw out gently" imply the angels, who wrench out the soul of man at death from the very depths of his body, from its every fiber

And [by] those who remove with ease(2)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

- 5918 - The second point is that in contrast with the wicked, the souls of the blessed will be drawn out gently to their new life. They will be ready for it. In fact death for them will be a release from the grosser
incidents of bodily sense. To them the approach of Judgement will be welcome.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

- By those who gently draw out the souls of the righteous

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

- (By the meteors rushing) and it is also said that He is here swearing by the angels who busy the disbelievers with grief and anxiety; it is also said that this refers to the souls of the believers which hasten to come out of their bodies in order to go to the Garden.

Tafseer Jalalain

- By those that draw out, [by] the angels who draw out the souls of believers, gently;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

- The word nashitat is derived from nasht and it means 'to untie the knot'. This signifies 'to untie the knot of something which contains water or air, so that it may be released easily'. This is metaphor for drawing out the souls of the believers gently, unlike the souls of the infidels which are plucked out harshly. In this case too the adverb 'smoothly' refers to the spiritual smoothness, and not to the physical experience. Sometimes, it happens that there is a delay at the time of death of a righteous believer. This may not be suspected to mean that he is undergoing some sort of suffering, although physically it may seem so. When the soul of a believer is extracted, on the other hand, the reward, the blessings and the welcome news of the barzakh come in front of him.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

- and by those (angels) who untie the knot (of the souls of the believers) smoothly,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

- Allah then swears by those angels "who untie knots *. This refers to those angels who remove souls very gently from the body. Commentators state that the first group of angels extract the souls of the disbelievers while the second group extract the souls of the believers. Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

And [by] those who glide [as if] swimming(3)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

: At all times are errands of mercy and blessings and errands of justice, which the angels are prompt to execute by order of Allah. There are three features of this, thus giving the third, fourth, and fifth points. (3) Their movement is compared to that of gliding or swimming (sabhan). In 21:33 this verb is applied to the motion of the celestial bodies: they all "swim along, each in its rounded course". Cf. Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice : "There's not an orb which thou behold'st, But in his motion life and angel sings, Still quiring to the young-eyed cherubims". (4) In hurrying on their errands angels press forth as in a race. (5) And thus they promptly execute the orders of their Lord

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

By those who glide about swiftly through space

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(By the lone stars floating) and it is also said that He is here swearing by the angels who take away the souls of the righteous slowly and gently and then let them rest; it is also said this refers to the souls of the believers

Tafseer Jalalain

: by those that glide serenely, [by] the angels who descend from the heavens with His command, exalted be He

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

; (and by those who float [in the atmosphere] swiftly.. .79:3). The word sabh literally means to 'swim' or 'float'. Here it signifies 'to glide along swiftly as in the sea where there is no mountain barrier'. The one who swims fast and goes far in swimming or a boatman who moves directly towards his final destination. The 'angels who float swiftly' refer to the quality of the angels of death who extract human souls and take them quickly towards the sky.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Then proceed forward quickly

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

: Allah Ta'ala then takes an oath by those angels "who swim along".
Commentators state that this refers to the fluid and swift movement of the angels
as they transport the soul of the believer to the heavens. Thereafter, Allah swears
by the angels "who then swiftly race" off with the souls of people once Allah
instructs them where to take the souls. Once the decision is made and the
instruction issued, the angels hasten to "arrange the (fulfilment of the) commands (of
Allah)."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Those who glide about swiftly", according to Hadrat Ibn Mas`ud, Mujahid, Sa`id bin Jubair and Abu Salih, also imply the angels, who hurry about swiftly in execution of Divine Commands as though they were gliding through space

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

:(And those who govern the event) and He swears by the angels who govern the matters of the slaves, meaning Gabriel, Michael, Seraphiel and the angel of death. It is said that (those who govern the event) refers to the spears of soldiers, (the meteors rushing) refers to the ropes of soldiers and (the lone stars floating) refers to the ships of soldiers who fight at sea, (the ones who do the hastening) refers to the horses of soldiers, while (those who govern the event) refers to the generals of soldiers; it is also said that (the lone stars floating) refer to the sun, the moon, the day and the night. Allah swore by all these that the two blowings of the trumpet will take place, with an interval of 40 years separating the two blowings.

Tafseer Jalalain

and by those that direct the affair, [by] the angels who direct the affairs of this world, that is to say, they descend with the directions for it [from God] (the response to all of these oath clauses has been omitted, understood to be [something like], la-tub‘athunna yā kuffāra Makka, ‘you shall certainly be resurrected, O disbelievers of Mecca!’, which is also the operator of [the following clause]):

The above oaths are taken to assert that "The day (shall certainly take place)

"that which shakes" refers to the first blowing of the trumpet, which will violently
shake everything. The first blowing of the trumpet will "be followed by that which

Tafseer Jalalain

the day when the Tremor quakes, that is to say, the first blast, as a result of which everything will be shaken violently (thus it [the subject] has been described in terms of the effect it produces)and is followed by the Aftershock, the second blast; between the two [blasts] is a span of forty years (the sentence [tatba‘uhā’l-rādifatu] is a circumstantial qualifier referring to al-rājifa, ‘the Tremor’, in other words, the ‘day’ can [adverbially] accommodate both blasts and other events, and so for this reason it can also properly function as the adverbial qualifier for the Resurrection that will take place after the second [blast]).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The Surah thus far confirms that at the time of death, the angels will arrive and extract human souls. Then they will take them to the sky and swiftly transport them to their abodes, the good souls to the good abode and the bad souls to the bad one. There they will organise means of reward or punishment and pain or comfort for them. The verses show that the reward and punishment will take place in the grave or barzakh. Thereafter the reward and punishment will be meted out on the Day of Judgement. Authentic Traditions give elaborate details of this. There is a lengthy Tradition of SayyidnZ Bar2 Ibn 'Lib & cited in MishkZt-ul- Ma~Zblh with reference to Musnad of Ahmad.

"that which shakes" refers to the first blowing of the trumpet, which will violently

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The first jolt implies the jolt which will destroy the earth and everything on it, and the second jolt at which all dead men will rise up from death and from their graves. This same state has been described in Surah Az-Zumar, thus: "And when the Trumpet shall be blown on that Day, all those who are in the heavens and the earth shall fall down dead except those whom Allah may allow (to live). Then the Trumpet shall be blown again and they will all stand up, looking around." (v. 68)

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The Day on which the quake shall cause a violent commotion, which will be followed by another violent commotion

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

:(On that day) which is the Day of Judgement (hearts beat painfully) the hearts are fearful (While eyes are downcast) abased

Tafseer Jalalain

on that day hearts will be trembling, frightened and anxious, their eyes humbled, abject, because of the terror that they see.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

On that day, hearts (of people) will be throbbing, with their eyes downcast.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

On that day, hearts (of people) will be throbbing, with their eyes downcast.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Describing the condition of people on the Day of Judgment, Allah says, "On
that day, many hearts will be fluttering with their gazes cast down."

"Some hearts", because, according to the Qur'an, only the disbelievers, the wicked people and the hypocrites will be terror-stricken on the Resurrection Day, the righteous believers will remain secure from this tenor. About them in Surah Al-Anbiya' it has been said: "The time of great fright will not trouble them at all; the angels will rush. forth to receive them, saying: `This is the very Day which you were promised'." (v. 103)

Hearts, that Day, will tremble,(8)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The Unbelievers say now, in their arrogance, insolence, and mocking defiance: "Surely death here is the end of all things! When we are dead and buried, and our bones are rotten, how can we be restored again?" They add, "If that were so, then we should indeed be in a turn of dreadful luck! Instead of gaining by the Resurrection, we should be in terrible loss (with our rotten bones)!"They mean this in biting mockery. But there will indeed be an Account taken, and they will indeed be in a terrible loss, for they will go to perdition

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The unbelievers say: “Shall we really be restored to our former state (life), when we shall have become decayed bones?”

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

:((Now) they) the disbelievers of Mecca: al-Nadr Ibn al-Harith and his host (are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state) to the life of the world; and it is also said: from the graves (Even after we are crumbled bones?) Will Allah resurrect us? How is this possible?

Tafseer Jalalain

They, those of the [mentioned] hearts and eyes, will say, mockingly and in rejection of the Resurrection: ‘Are we indeed (read a-innā pronouncing both hamzas, or by not pronouncing the second, and inserting an alif between them in both cases, and in both instances) being restored as before? Shall we be restored to life after death (al-hāfira is a noun signifying the ‘first part’ of anything, from which is derived the expression raja‘a fī hāfiratihi to mean that so and so ‘returned whence he had come’).What! When we have been decayed bones?’ (nakhira: a variant reading has nākhira, ‘decayed and withered’), will we have life again?

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Are we going to be brought back to our former state (of life)? Is it when we will have turned into decayed bones?" In other words, this is a negative rhetorical question. They purport to say that it is not possible for them to be restored to life after death when they have become perished and worm-eaten bones. Allah responds that the Supreme Creator, Who drew out this universe without any pre-existing matter and without any instrument, certainly has the Supreme power to give existence to things after destroying them. Why should it be a surprise?

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

They (the infidels) say, “Are we going to be brought back to our former state (of Life)? Is it when we are turned into decayed bones?”

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Describing the condition of people on the Day of Judgment, Allah says, "On that day, many hearts will be fluttering with their gazes cast down." Allah then quotes
what the disbelievers used to say about Judgment day. They say, "Will we be
returned to our former states even after we have become decomposed bones?" The
disbelievers regard the advent of Judgment day as something far fetched and
cynically ask this question. They also say "In that case the return shall be a
tremendous loss. " The disbelievers said that if Judgment day were to take place as
the Holy Prophet Peace be upon him said, they would be ruined because they will then suffer the punishment for their rejection. However, this statement was also
intended to mock the belief of Judgment day because the disbelievers did not
even have a vague belief that Judgment day could be a reality. If they did have
the concern that they may have to suffer a loss, they would not have behaved as
badly as they did.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, when they were told that they would surely be raised back to life after death, they started mocking it, saying to one another, "Well, if we have really to be restored to our former state of life, then we would certainly be doomed. "That is, "They are mocking it as an impossibility, whereas it is not at all a difficult task for Allah for the performance of which He may have to make lengthy preparations. For it only a single shout or cry is enough at which your dust of ash will gather together from wherever it lay, and you will suddenly find yourself alive on the back of the earth.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

In the verses that follow, the horrors of the Day of Judgement are depicted. It is mentioned that on that Day, every person will be presented with his deeds. Described also are the abodes of the inmates of Paradise Siirah An-Naziyaat and Hell. Towards the end, special traits of the people of Paradise and those of Hell are portrayed by which a man can decide in this very world whether, according to the rules, his abode would be Paradise or Hell. The expression 'according to the rules' has been used because many verses and narratives indicate that there could be 'exceptions to the rules'. For example, a person might attain freedom from Hell and enter Paradise by virtue of intercession or directly through the grace of Allah. This is an exception to the rule. The general rule is the same as has been mentioned in these verses.

They are [presently] saying, Will we indeed be returned to [our] former state [of life]?(10)

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

They should know that it shall be only a single shout, they will be back to life in open plain.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

And so Allah said: (Surely it will need but one shout) one blow which does not require a second one, and this is the blow of the resurrection, (And lo! they will be awakened) on the face of the earth; and it is also said: in the land of the gathering.

Tafseer Jalalain

God, exalted be He, says: But it, the Aftershock, which will be followed by the Resurrection, will be only a single blast, and so when it is blasted: behold, then, they, all creatures, will be upon the surface of the earth, alive, after having been dead inside it.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(and in no time they will be [brought] in the plain hashr] ... 79:14). The words Zhirah refers to 'the surface of the earth'. When the earth will be re-created at Resurrection, it will be a completely level surface. There will be no mountain barriers, no buildings or caves. This is referred to as 'sZhirah '. The Holy Prophet $& used to be hurt by the stubbornness of the obdurate rejecters of Resurrection. The next verses recount the story of Mussa A.s and Fir'aun to console him, and to show that the adverse attitude of the pagans is not confined to him. The previous prophets have also faced similar situations, but they endured them with patience. The Holy Prophet $& too should exercise patience and fortitude.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

In fact, it will be only a single harsh voice, and in no time they will be (brought) into the plain (of hashar ) .

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

"It will be only a single blast and they will all immediately be present for Reckoning. " Although the disbelievers regarded the advent of Judgment day to be something far fetched and impossible, it is an extremely simple matter for Allah. When Allah issues the command, all it takes for people to be resurrected for Judgment day is a single blast of the trumpet and everyone will present

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

di As the denial of the Resurrection and Hereafter by the believers of Makkah and their mockery of it was not, in fact, rejection of a philosophy but belying Allah's Messengers, and the tricks that they were employing against the Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah's peace) were not against an ordinary man but were meant to frustrate the mission of Allah's Messenger, the story of the Prophet Moses and the Pharaoh is being related before giving additional arguments for the occurrence of the Hereafter so that they are warned of the consequences of fighting with the Messenger and resisting the God Who sent him.

Even if we should be decayed bones?(11)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

This is just a reference to the story of Moses told more fully in S. 20:9-76.
The lessons drawn are: That even to an arrogant blasphemer and rebel against
Allah's Law, like Pharaoh, Allah's grace was offered through a major prophet
Moses; that this rejection brought about his signal downfall even in this world;
and that his humiliation and punishment will be completed in the Hereafter at
Judgement.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Have you heard the story of Musa (Moses)? When his Rabb called him in the sacred valley of Tuwâ,

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Hath there come unto thee) O Muhammad (the history of Moses) the story of Moses? Meaning: the story of Moses has already come to you; and it is also said this means: the story of Moses has not yet come to you. [79:16] (How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa) the name of the valley; it was called so because it was traversed by so many prophets; it is also said: tread (Ta'), O Moses, with your feet on this valley because of its goodness and grace.

Tafseer Jalalain

Have you, O Muhammad (s), received the story of Moses (hadīthu Mūsā operates [the clause that follows]),when his Lord called out to him in the holy valley of Tuwā? — this is the name of the valley (it may be read with nunation, Tuwan, or without) — and He said:

Has there come to you the narrative about Musa ? [15] (Recall) when his Lord called to him in the blessed valley of Tuwa

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Sayyidina Musa A.Swas from the Bani Isra'il who lived in Egypt from the time of Sayyidina Yusuf r ^U\ -d*. The Copts of Egypt greatly oppressed the Bani Isra'il and made their lives miserable. It was during these trying times that Sayyidina Musa A.S was born. Upon direction from Allah Ta'ala, his mother placed him in a basket, which she put in the river. When the basket passed by phara'oh's (Firoun's) palace, phara'oh's (Firoun's) wife had it removed from the river. When she saw the child inside, she was overwhelmed with the child and beseeched phara'oh (Phir'oun) to keep the child as a son in the palace.Consequently, Sayyidina Musa A.S grew up in pharaoh's (Firoun's) palace. When he grew up, he killed a Copt by mistake when he tried to assist an Isra'Ili.When the news reached pharaoh (Phir'oun) and his ministers, they decided to execute Sayyidina Musa A.S Learning of their intention, Sayyidina Musa A.S left Egypt and settled in Madyan where he married and tended the goats of his father-in-law for ten years. He then decided to return to Egypt with his wife but lost the way.Eventually, he saw what appeared to be a fire in the distance. Thinking that he could get a brand of fire to keep his wife warm and find someone to direct him,Sayyidina Musa r %~K Up set out in the direction of the 'fire -. When he reached the
sacred valley of Tuwa where the fire" was, Allah addressed him and made him a Nabi (Prophet). Allah asked him to throw down his staff, which Allah made into a snake and Allah also showed him that his hand could become a shining lamp by placing it beneath his arm. Allah also commanded him to preach to phara'oh (Fir'oun) and his people. It is with reference to this that Allah says, "Has the story of Musa A.s reached you? When his Lord called him on the blessed valley of Tuwa (He said to him) 'Go to phara'oh (Fir'oun) for he has certainly transgressed. Tell him,

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

As the denial of the Resurrection and Hereafter by the disbelievers of Makkah and their mockery of it was not, in fact, rejection of a philosophy but belying Allah's Messengers, and the tricks that they were employing against the Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah's peace) were not against an ordinary man but were meant to frustrate the mission of Allah's Messenger, the story of the Prophet Musa A.s and the Pharaoh is being related before giving additional arguments for the occurrence of the Hereafter so that they are warned of the consequences of fighting with the Messenger and resisting the God Who sent him.
According to general opinion among the commentators "the sacred. valley of 'Tuwa" means "the sacred valley which was named Tuwa". But, besides this, two other meanings of it also have been given:
(1) "The valley that was blessed and made sacred twice". for it was first made sacred when Allah spoke to Musa A.s in it for the first time, and it was blessed and made sacred for the second time when the Prophet Musa A.sled the children of Israel out of Egypt and brought them into it; and
(2) "called out to him in the sacred valley in the night," and this is according to the meaning of tuwa in the Arabic idiom.

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Even for such a one as Pharaoh , intoxicated with his own power and greatness,
guidance and grace were offered through Moses.
What was the Great Sign ? Some Commentators understand by it the “ White
Shining Hand Olliers think it was the miracle of the rod
that became a “snake active in motion”These were among the Greater Signsthere is a reference to nine Clear Signs given to Moses, and these are specified in detail in n . 1091 to vii. 133. The fact is , there were many Signs given , “openly self-explained,” hut Pharaoh and his men “ were steeped in arrogance,-a
people given to sin ” ( vii . 133). Hie pre -eminently Great Sign was therefore the fact of Moses being sent to Pharaoh , which subsequently converted the magicians and the more learned Egyptians to the true God ( xx. 70-73) , though Pharaoh and his Chiefs resistedand suffered for their sins.

Tags-pharoah,transgressed,ask him to purify.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

and said: “Go to Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) for he has indeed transgressed all bounds, and tell him, `Have you the desire to purify yourself If so, I shall guide you towards your Rabb, so that you may fear Him.' Then Musa A.s showed Fir‘aun the mighty sign, but he denied and disobeyed

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

:((Saying:) Go thou) O Moses (unto Pharaoh. Lo! he hath rebelled) he is arrogant and too proud and has refused to believe in Allah [79:18] (And say (unto him): Hast thou) O Pharaoh ((will) to grow (in grace)) will become righteous, surrender and believe in Allah's divine Oneness?(Then I will guide thee) I will call you (to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him)) and therefore surrender to Him.(And he) Moses (showed him the tremendous token) the hand and the staff.(But be denied) and said: this is not from Allah (and disobeyed) he refused the message.

Tafseer Jalalain

Go to Pharaoh; he has indeed become rebellious, he has exceeded [all] bounds with his disbelief, and say, “Would you — I call you [to] — purify yourself (tazakkā: a variant reading has tazzakkā, where the original second tā’ [of tatazakkā] has been assimilated with the zāy), to purge yourself of idolatry, by bearing witness that there is no god but God,and allow me to guide you to your Lord, to show you how to know Him (ma‘rifa) by way of proofs, so thatyou may have fear [of Him]?”So he showed him the greatest sign, from among His nine signs, namely, the [glowing] hand or the[slithering] staff. But he, Pharaoh, denied, Moses, and disobeyed, God, exalted be He.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The next verses recount the story of Muss A.s and Fir'aun to console him, and to show that the adverse attitude of the pagans is not confined to him. The previous prophets have also faced similar situations, but they endured them with patience. The Holy Prophet & too should exercise patience and fortitude.
(So, Allah seized him for the deterrent punishment in the Hereafter and the present world .... 79:25). The word nakZl means an 'exemplary punishment' or 'an extremely severe punishment given to an offender to deter others against committing a similar offence or sin'.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And say (to him,)‘Would you like to purify yourself, and that I should guide you to your Lord, so that you fear ( Him)? So, he ( Musa) showed him the biggest sign. But he rejected and disobeyed, then he turned back, and tried hard (to refute the Messenger),

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Complying with Allah's command, Sayyidina Musa U^ left for Egypt where he was joined by his brother Harun A,s whom Allah had also made a Nabi (Prophet) at Sayyidina Musa's UP request. Entering phara'oh's( Fir'oun' s) court, they warned him about Allah's punishment if he did not desist from his evil ways. They told him, 'it has been revealed to us that punishment shall befor those who falsify and turn away. "Hearing that Sayyidina Musa A.s preached the divinity of Allah, Phara'oh ( Fir'oun) was extremely upset because he indoctrinated the people into believing that he was their god. He asked Sayyidina Musa <v>UJ\ UP a series of questions to intimidate him, but Sayyidina Musa A.s answered the questions with great courage. Unable to win any ground from Sayyidina Musa UP, pharaoh ( Fir'oun) finally said, "If you takeanother as a deity besides myself I shall definitely make you of the prisoners!' Musa Upsaid, 'Even if I bring you a clear proof?' phara'oh ( Fir'oun) said, 'Bring it ifyou are truthful. ' So Musa UP cast down his staff and it suddenly became manifest serpent. And he withdrew his hand, which instantly turned white for all to see."[ Surah Shu'ard (26 ), verses 29-33]It is with reference to these miracles that Allah says, " So he [ Sayyidina Musa A.s showed him phara'oh ( Fir'oun) a great sign. " However, instead of accepting, phara'oh ( Fir'oun)' Falsified and disobeyed."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Here, one should understand a few things well:

(1) The dialogue that took place between the Prophet Moses and Allah Almighty at the time of appointing him to the office of Prophet hood has been related at some places briefly and at others in full detail in the Qur'an as the occasion demanded. Here; brevity was the need; therefore, only a resume has been given. Fuller details are found in Ta Ha: 9-48, Ash-Shua`ra': 10-17, An Naml: 7-12, AI-Qasas: 29-35.

(2) The rebellion of the Pharaoh referred to here relates to his transgressing the bounds of service and rebelling both against the Creator and against His creatures. As for his rebellion against the Creator, it is being mentioned a little below when he gathered his people together and prolaimed: "I am your lord, the supreme." As against the creatures his rebellion was that he had divided his subjects into classes; he treated the weak classes tyrannically and had reduced his entire nation to slavery as has been mentioned in Al-Qasas: 4 and Az-Zukhruf: 54.

The instruction given to Moses was: "Go, you and your brother Aaron, to Pharaoh for he has transgressed all bounds. Talk to him gently; maybe that he is convinced by admonition or is imbued with fear." (Ta Ha: 44). One model of the gentle speech has been given in these verses, which shows what right method a preacher should adopt when preaching to a perverted man. Other models are given in Ta Ha: 49-52, Ash-Shua`ra': 23-28, and Al-Qasas: 37. These verses are of those in which Allah has taught the correct methods of preaching Islam in the Qur'an.
The Prophet Moses had not been sent to Pharaoh only for the deliverance of the children of Israel as some people seem to think but the primary object of his appointment was to show Pharaoh and his people the right way, and the second object was that if he did not accept the right way, the children of Israel (who in fact were a Muslim people) should be taken out of his slavery and from Egypt. This thing becomes plain from these verses too, for there is no mention whatever in these of the deliverance of the children of Israel, but the Prophet Moses has been commanded to present the message of the Truth before Pharaoh, and this is confirmed by those verses also in which the Prophet Moses has preached Islam as well as demanded freedom of the children of Israel, e.g. see Al-A`raf 104-105, Ta Ha: 47-52, Ash-Shua ara': 16-17, 23-28. (For further explanation, see E.N. 74 of Yunus).
Here, "to adopt purity" means to adopt purity of belief, morals and deeds, or, in other words, to accept Islam. Ibn Zaid says: "Wherever in the Qur'an the word tazakka (purity) has been use, it implies acceptance of Islam." As an example of this he has cited the following three verses: "And this is the reward of him who adopts purity", i.e. accepts Islam; "and what would make you know that he might adopt purity", i.e. becomes a Muslim (`Abasa:3); "And you would not be responsible if he did not adapt purity", i.e. did not become a Muslim (`Abasa: 7). (Ibn Jarir).

Indeed, it will be but one shout,(13)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

If man grows arrogant or forgets his accountability to Allah, in his ignorance or thoughtlessness, he is reminded that he is only an insignificant speck in Allah's spacious Creation. All the excellence that man acquires is the gift of Allah. Who has bestowed on him a high Destiny if he fulfils the purpose of his creation
Tags-Lesson for disbelievers(Firaun & his companions )

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

:(Then turned he away) from faith; and it is also said: from Moses (in haste) to his folk; and it is also said: to think what to do about Moses,(Then gathered he) his army (and summoned) and delivered a sermon(And proclaimed: “I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest”.) I am your Highest Lord and the Lord of your idols, therefore, do not leave the worship of these idols.(So Allah seized him) Allah punished him ((and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former) the punishment that he suffered in the life of the world is drowning and the punishment of the Hereafter will be in the Fire; it is also said that this means: Allah has punished him because of his former and latter pronouncements. His first pronouncement being: “I do not know of any other god for you except Me” and the second being (I am your Lord the Highest) and it is said that there is an interval of 40 years between the first and second pronouncements.(Lo! Herein) in that which We did to Pharaoh and his host (is indeed a lesson) an admonition (for him who feareth) that which has been done to them.

Tafseer Jalalain

Then he turned his back, to faith, going about in haste, throughout the land causing corruption. Then he gathered, he assembled the sorcerers and his armies, and proclaimed, and said, ‘I am your most high lord!’, above whom is no other lord.So God seized him, He destroyed him by drowning him, as punishment for the latter, that is to say, these[last] words [of his], and for the former, that is to say, his saying previously, ‘I do not know of any god for you other than me’ [Q. 28:38]and between the two [claims made by Pharaoh] was an interval of forty years.Assuredly in that, which is mentioned, there is a moral for him who fears, God, exalted be He.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The phrase 'punishment of the 'iila' refers to the punishment meted out to Fir'aun (the Pharaoh) and his army in this world where by they were destroyed by drowning.Further, the Qur'an again disposes of the doubt of the rejecters of resurrection who pose the question: "Are we going to be brought back to our former state (of life)? Is it when we will have turned into decayed bones?" [IO-I~I]n other words, this is a negative rhetorical question. They purport to say that it is not possible for them to be restored to life after death when they have become perished and worm-eaten bones

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

then he gathered (his people) and shouted and said, “I am your supreme lord.” So,Allah seized him for an exemplary punishment in the Hereafter and the present world . Indeed, there is a lesson for him who fears

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Phara'oh ( Fir'oun) then declared that Sayyidina Musa A.s was a magician and arranged a contest between Sayyidina Musa A.S and the magicians of the land. Not only did Sayyidina Musa UP defeat the magicians, but he made them all believers. However, phara'oh ( Fir'oun) was still adamant not to accept and continued claiming his divinity. Allah says that phara'oh ( Fir'oun) "turned away and applied himself to find a way to stop the spread of Sayyidina Musa's A.s message."He gathered the people and proclaimed, 7 am your highest Lord!" However, all his schemes failed and he was eventually drowned with his entire army. Allah says," So Allah seized him with the punishment of this world and the Hereafter."Allah says about phara'oh ( Fir'oun) in Surah Hud, "He will lead his people on the Day of Judgement and enter them into the Fire. It is an evil place indeed where they shall be entered." About him and his army, Allah says in Surah Qasas, "We set a curse after them in this world ,and on the day of Judgment, they shall be among the hateful."Allah declares, "There is certainly a lesson in this for the one who fears." People who are concerned that they should not suffer the same plight because of disobedience will heed the lessons in this episode. However, those who are heedless of the warnings and who do not care to apply their intelligence will continue to disobey Allah. Like Fir'oun and his people, they will also destroy themselves.
The details of Sayyidina Musa's A,s story is discussed in Surah Yunus [ Surah 10, verses 75-92 ],Surah Taha [Surah 20, verses 9-98 ],Surah Naml [Surah 27, verses 7-14 ],Surah Qasas [Surah 28, verses 3-50] and several other Surah as well.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The great Sign" : the turning of the staff into a serpent, as has been mentioned at several places in the Qur'an. Obviously there could be no greater sign than that a lifeless staff should turn into a living serpent right in front of the eyes of the people, that it should devour the artificial serpents produced by the magicians out of their staffs and cords, and when the Prophet Moses should pick it up, it should become a walking stick again. This was proof that it was Allah, Lord of the worlds, Who had sent Moses as a Prophet.
According to the details given at other places in the Qur'an, he summoned skillful magicians from all over Egypt and made them produce serpents out of sticks and cords in front of the assembled people so that they were convinced that Moses (peace be upon him was not a Prophet but a magician, and that the miracle worked by him of turning a staff into a serpent, could also be worked by other magicians. But this device of his recoiled upon himself and the defeated magicians themselves admitted that what Moses (peace be on him) had displayed was no magic but a miracle.
This proclamation of Pharaoh has been mentioned at several places in the Qur'an. On one occasion he said to the Prophet Moses: "If you took another one as a deity beside me, I would cast you in the prison." (Ash-Shua`ra': 29). On another occasion he had addressed his courtiers, saying: "O chiefs, I do not know of any other god of yours than myself. (Al-Qasas.: 38). By this Pharaoh did not mean, nor could he ever mean, that he himself was the creator of the universe and he had made the world, nor that he denied the existence of Allah and claimed to be lord of the universe, nor that he regarded only himself as a deity of the people in the religious sense. In the Qur'an itself there is a clear testimony that as regards religion he himself worshiped other gods. Once his courtiers said to him: "Will you leave Moses and his people free to spread chaos in the land, and let them discard you and your deities?" (Al A`raf: 127). And in the Qur'an itself this saying of the Pharaoh also has been cited: "Had Moses been sent by Allah, why were not bracelets of gold sent down to him, or a company of angels as attendants?" (AzZukhruf: 53). Thus, in fact, he called himself a god and supreme deity not in the religious but in the political sense. What he meant was that he possessed the sovereign rights: no one beside him had the right to rule in his kingdom and there was no superior power whose orders could be enforced in the land. (For further explanation. see E.N. 85 of Al-A`raf, E.N. 21 of Ta Ha, E.N.'s 24, 26 of Ash Shua'ra', E-N.'s 52, 53 of Al-Qasas E.N. 49 of Az-Zukhruf).
"who fears": who fears the consequences of denying God's Messenger, which the Pharaoh experienced in the past.

And suddenly they will be [alert] upon the earth's surface.(14)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

If man grows arrogant or forgets his accountability to Allah, in his ignorance
or thoughtlessness, he is reminded that he is only an insignificant speck in Allah's
spacious Creation (Cf. 36:81). All the excellence that man acquires is the gift of
Allah, Who had bestowed on him a high Destiny if he fulfils the purpose of his
creation: 2:30-39. Then follows a nature passage, pointing to the glory of the
heavens and the earth, and how they are both made to subserve the life of man.
The mystery of the heavens with their countless stars and the planets obeying the laws of motion, and the sun and moon influencing the temperature and climates of the earth from thousands or millions of miles, illustrate the order and perfection which Allah has given to His Creation. Can man then remain exempt from his responsibility for his deeds, endowed as he is with a will, or deny the Day of Sorting Out, which is the Day of Judgement? Its of course refers to the starry heaven. Both the Night and the Day have each its own beauty and its utility for man, as has been frequently pointed out in the Qur'an. The night is a period of darkness, but it has also its splendours of light in the moon, or the planets Jupiter or Venus, or stars like Sirius or the Milky Way. These countless lights of night have their own beauty, and by day there is splendour of the sun for us, which in Creation as a whole, is just one of countless stars Moreover: or, more literally, after that The underground springs and wells as well as rivers and glaciers in northern climates are due to the different levels of highlands and lowlands. They spread the moisture evenly as wanted, and give corn, fruits, and vegetables to man, and pastures and feeding grounds to beasts of the fields. For the wonderful circuit or cycle of water between heaven and earth, see notes the "eternal hills" are the main reservoirs for the storage and gradual distribution of water, the very basis of the life of man and beast This clause I construe to apply to verses 30, 31, and 32 above. Everything on earth as, by Allah's bountiful providence, been arranged to subserve the use and convenience of man and the lower life which depends upon him. The intermediary between Allah's providence and the actual use made for Allah's other gifts is man's own intelligence and initiative, which are also gifts of Allah.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Are ye) O people of Mecca (the harder to create) harder to resurrect and more perfect in your creation, (or is the heaven that He built? He raised the height) its ceiling (thereof and ordered it) above the earth; (And He made dark the night thereof, and He brought forth the morn thereof) and He made its day and sun clear.(And after that He spread the earth) even then He spread it on the water; it is also said: 2,000 years after that He spread it on the water, (And produced therefrom) from the earth (the water thereof) running water as well as the water buried deep in the belly of the earth (and the pasture thereof, And He made fast the hills) and He made the mountains firm, (A provision for you) water of benefit to you (and for your cattle) water and pasture benefit your cattle.

Tafseer Jalalain

Are you (read a-antum pronouncing both hamzas, or by substituting an alif for the second one, not pronouncing it and inserting an alif between the one not pronounced and the former, or without [this insertion]), namely, [you] the deniers of the Resurrection, harder to create or the heaven which He has built?, harder to create (banāhā: an explication of the manner of [its] creation). He made it rise high — an explication of the manner of [its] construction; in other words, He made its vertical extension high; it is also said that samkahā means ‘its ceiling’ — and levelled it: He made it even, flawless, and darkened its night, and brought forth its day: He exposed the light of its sun (‘night’ has been annexed to it [the heaven] because it represents its shade, and likewise the ‘sun’, because it represents its light); and after that He spread out the earth: He made it flat, for it had been created before the heaven, but without having been spread out; from it He has brought forth (akhraja: a circumstantial qualifier with a suppressed [preceding] qad, that is to say, mukhrijan, ‘bringing forth [from it]’) its waters, by making its springs gush forth, and its pastures, what cattle graze, of trees and herbage, and what humans consume of foods and fruits (the use of mar‘ā to express this [of the earth] is figurative), and has set firm the mountains, on the face of the earth so that it stays still, as a [source of] sustenance (an object denoting reason for an implied [verbal clause], in other words, fa‘ala dhālika mut‘atan or tamtī‘an, ‘He did this to provide [a source of] sustenance’) for you and your flocks (an‘ām is the plural of na‘am, which are camels, cows and sheep).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Are you more difficult to be created or the sky? He has built it, He has raised its height, then made it proper, and darkened its night, and brought forth its daylight, and, after that, He spread out the earth. From it, He brought out its water and its meadows, and firmly fixed the mountains, (all this) as a benefit to you and your cattle. So when the Biggest Havoc will come

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Is your creation more difficult or that of the sky? 4 He has built it, He has raised its height, then made it proper, and darkened its night, and brought forth its daylight, and, after that, He spread out the earth. From it, He brought out its water and its meadows, and firmly fixed the mountains, (all this) as a benefit to you and your cattle.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

: Further addressing those who reject the coming of Judgment day, Allah asks, " Are you more difficult to create or the sky?" Because the sky is a much larger creation and contains so many phenomena, any person will understand that its creation should be more difficult than the creation of a man. If Allah has the
power to create the sky, he certainly has the power to resurrect man on the Day
of Judgment. Not only did Allah create the sky, Allah also "elevated its roof
perfected it, made its night dark and made its day manifest." Allah relates the night
and day to the sky because it appears as if they extend from the sky. After creating the sky, "Allah spread out the earth. He extracted from the earth her water and fodder and firmly stationed the mountains ( to stabilise the earth). All this for your benefit and for the benefit of your animals." It is therefore incumbent upon man to express gratitude to Allah for all these bounties and to believe in the divine scriptures and whatever Allah has revealed to His Prophets Refer to the commentaries of verses 9 to 12 of Surah HaMim Sajdah ( Surah 41 ) for
details about the sequence in which Allah created the heavens and the earth.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Now arguments are being given for the possibility of Resurrection and life after death and their being the very demand and requirement of wisdom.
Here, creation implies the recreation of men, and the heaven the entire firmament which contains countless stars and planets, and innumerable solar systems and galaxies. means to say: "You think that your resurrection after death is something extremely improbable and you express wonder saying: `How is it possible that when our very bones will have decayed and become rotten the scattered particles of our bodies will be reassembled and made living once again?' But have you ever also considered whether the great universe is harder to create or your own re-creation in the form in which you were created in the first instance? The God Who created you in the first instance cannot be powerless to create you once again." This same argument for life after death has been given at several places in the Qur'an. For example, in Surah Ya Sin it has been said: "Is not He Who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them (again)? Why not, when He is the skillful Creator." (v. 81) And in Surah Al-Mu'min it was said: "Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is a greater task than the creation of man, but most people do not know. (v. 57)
The night and the day have been attributed to the heaven, for the night falls when the sun of the heavens sets and the day dawns when it rises. The word "cover" has been used for the night in the sense that after the sun has set the darkness of the night so spreads over the earth as though it has covered it from above by a curtain.
"After that He spread out the earth" does not mean that Allah created the earth after the creation of the heavens, but it is a style of expression just like our saying after making mention of something: "Then this is noteworthy." The object is not to express the sequence of occurrence between the two things but to draw attention from the first to the second thing although both may exist together. Several instances of this style are found in the Qur'an, e.g. in Surah Al-Qalam it is said: "(He is) oppressive, and after that, ignoble by birth." This does not mean that first he became oppressive and then he turned ignoble by birth, but it means: "He is oppressive, and above all, ignoble by birth." Likewise, in Surah Al-Balad it is said: "Should free a slave...then be of those who believe." This also does not mean that first he should act righteously and then believe. but that along with doing righteous deeds he should also be characterized by belief. Here, one should also understand that at some places in the Qur'an the creation of the earth has been mentioned first and then the creation of the heavens, as in Al-Baqarah: 29, and at others the creation of the heavens has been mentioned first and then of the earth, as in these verses. There is, in fact, no contradiction in this. At no place the object is to tell what was created first and what afterwards, but wherever the context requires that the excellences of the power of Allah be made prominent, the heavens have been mentioned first and then the earth, and where the context requires that the people be made to appreciate and acknowledge the blessings that they are benefiting by on the earth, the mention of the earth has been made before that of the heavens. (For further explanation, see E.N's 13,14 of Ha Mim As-Sajdah).
"Pasture" here does not only imply pasture and fodder for the animals but all kinds of herbal produce suitable for consumption both by man and by animal. An example of the use of rat'. which is generally used in Arabic for the grazing animals, is found in Surah Yusuf: 12, signifying that this word is sometimes used for man also. The brothers of Joseph said to their father: "Send Joseph with us tomorrow that he may freely graze and enjoy sport. " Here, the word grace (rat`) for the child has been used in the meaning that he may move about freely in the jungle and pluck and eat fruit.
In these verses arguments have been given for the Resurrection and life after death from two aspects: first, that it is not at all difficult to establish these for the power of that God Who has made this vast and huge universe with such wonderful balance and this earth with such provisions. Second, that the pointers to the perfect wisdom of Allah which are clearly visible in the universe and the earth, point out that nothing is happening here purposelessly. The balance that exists between countless of the stars and planets and galaxies in the heavens testifies that all this has not happened haphazardly but there is a well thought-out plan working behind it. The regular alternation of the night and day is an evidence that this system has been established with supreme wisdom and knowledge for making the earth a home and place of settlement. On this very earth are found regions where the alternation of the night and day takes place within 24 hours and also those regions where there are longer days and longer nights. A very large part of the earth's population lives in the first kind of the regions. Then as the days and nights go on becoming longer and longer, life goes on becoming harder and harder and population thinner and thinner. So much so that the regions where there are six-month-long days and six-month-long nights, are not at all fit for human settlement. Arranging both these types of the land on this very earth Allah has provided the evidence that this regular order of the alternation of night and day has not come about accidentally but has been brought about with great wisdom precisely in accordance with a scheme to make the earth a place fit for human settlement. Likewise, spreading out the earth so that it becomes a fit place to live in, providing in it that water which should be palatable for man and animal and a cause of growth for vegetation, setting in it mountains and creating all those things which may become a means of life for both man and animal- all these are a manifest sign that they are not chance happenings of the purposeless works of a carefree person but each one of these has been arranged purposefully by a Supreme, Wise Being. Now every sensible and intelligent man can consider for himself whether the necessity and occurrence of the Hereafter is the requirement of wisdom or its negation. The person who in spite of seeing all this says that there is no Hereafter, in fact, says that everything in the universe is happening wisely and purposefully, but only the creation of man on the earth as a being endowed with sense and power is meaningless and foolish. For there could be nothing more purposeless than delegating to man vast powers of appropriation in the earth and providing him an opportunity to do good as well as evil deeds but then failing to ever subject him to accountability.

The Judgement, the time for sorting out all things according to their true, intrinsic, and eternal values

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

When the great disaster will strike, the Day when man will call to mind all that he had striven for.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(But when the great disaster cometh) but when the Hour comes, it will tower above everything and nothing will escape it, (The day when man will call to mind) when the disbeliever, al-Nadr Ibn al-Harith and his host, will remember and know (his (whole) endeavour) the works he did in his state of disbelief

Tafseer Jalalain

So when the Greatest Catastrophe befalls — the second blast the day when man will remember (yawma yatadhakkaru’l-insānu substitutes for idhā, ‘when’) his efforts, in the [life of the] world, in the way of good or evil,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Further, the Qur'an again disposes of the doubt of the rejecters of resurrection who pose the question: "Are we going to be brought back to our former state (of life)? Is it when we will have turned into decayed bones?"
in other words, this is a negative rhetorical question. In the verses that follow, the horrors of the Day of Judgement are depicted. It is mentioned that on that Day,

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

So when the Greatest Havoc will take place [34] on the day when manwill recall what he did, [35]

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Referring to Judgment day, Allah says, "So when the tremendous calamity
befalls, that day man will recall what he did and Hell will be manifest for those who look on." The Arabic word "tamma" (translated above as "calamity") is derived from the word "tamma "which refers to something that rises above and overwhelms everything else. Judgment Day is therefore referred to as "tamma" because it is a calamity that overwhelms all other calamities. Sayyidina Hasan Basri states that "the tremendous calamity" refers to the second blowing of the trumpet. When Judgment Day takes place, every person will realise whether his deeds are good enough to take him to Heaven or whether they are lacking. On that day there will be only two groups, as Allah says in Surah Shura, "A group shall be in Heaven, while another shall be in the Blaze."[Surah 42, verse 7] to accept Islam because they fear losing their wealth or positions. This displays their preference for this world over the Hereafter. It is for the same reason that Muslims also commit sins. Chasing after wealth, fame and position leads people to commit sins, to neglect their Obligatory and Compulsory obligations and to involve themselves in everything that violates Allah's commands. On the other hand, when a person gives pre c erence to the life Hereafter, he will be conscious about leading a life of piety and will stay far from sin.

Allah then speaks about the second type of person when He says, "As for the
one who fears standing before his Lord and who restrains himself from carnal passions, then Heaven shall definitely be his abode. " Whenever a person wants to do good and abstain from evil, his carnal self presents an obstacle. One's carnal self wants only pleasure and enjoyment and loves the world for this. It has no inclination for the Hereafter because its concern is only for the pleasures of this world. It will therefore spur a person on to commit sins and to lead a life of recklessness. Therefore, when a person gains control over his carnal self (his Nafs), he will be able to abstain from sin and will content himself with what is Halal (lawful) instead of Haram (unlawful). Such people will attain the high ranks of Heaven.

The person who fears standing for reckoning before Allah will receive two
gardens of Heaven, as Allah says in Surah Rahman, "The one who fears standing in the presence of his Lord shall have two gardens." [Surah 55, verse 46]

Sayyidina Jabir narrates that the Holy Prophet Pbuh said, "I fear most for my Ummah that they follow the dictates of their Nafs (Carnal self) and that they entertain lengthy hopes. The desires of the Nafs (carnal self) prevents one from the truth and lengthy hopes make one forget about the Akhirah (Hereafter). This world is travelling and leaving while the Akhirah (Hereafter) is travelling and approaching Each has its sons, so if you can avoid being a son of this world then do so. Today you are in the place of deeds (the world) where there is no reckoning and tomorrow you will be in the Akhirah (Hereafter) where there are no deeds (only reckoning). surah An-Nazi'at 79: 34-46 341 Anwar-ul-Bayan (v. 10)

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This implies the Resurrection for which the words at-Taammat alkubra have been used. Taammah by itself is a grievous calamity which afflicts everybody. Then it has been further qualified by the word kubra (great), which shows that the mere word taammah is not enough to describe fully its intensity and severity. That is, "When man will see that the same Day of accountability of which he was being foretold in the world, has come, he will start remembering each one of his misdeeds done in the world even before his records are handed over to him. Some people experience this even in the world. if at some time they come across a dangerous situation suddenly when death seems to be staring them in the face, their whole life-film flashes across their mind's eye all at once.

When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,(16)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The abiding Punishment will be for those who had willfully and persistently rebelled against Allah, "transgressing all bounds", and had given themselves up to the vanities and lusts of this lower life. This Punishment will not touch those who had repented and been forgiven, nor those guilty, through human frailty, of minor sins, whose deeds will be weighed in the balance against their good deeds
Tags-Punishment for disbelievers Who are only considering worldly life

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

When hell shall be placed in full view of all; then he who had rebelled and preferred the life of this world shall have his abode in hell.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth) to him who is ordained to enter it, (Then, as for him who rebelled) him who was too arrogant and proud and disbelieved in Allah, i.e. al-Nadr Ibn al-Harith Ibn 'Alqamah (And chose the life of the world) rather than the Hereafter and also chose disbelief rather than faith, (Lo! Hell will be his home) the Fire is the home of him who is thus.

and the Hell-fire, the consuming Fire, is revealed for all to see, for every onlooker (the response to idhā, ‘when’, is [what follows]): as for him who was rebellious, [who] disbelieved, and preferred the life of this world, by pursuing [carnal] desires, Hell-fire will indeed be the abode, his abode.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

every person will be presented with his deeds. Described also are the abodes of the inmates of Paradise and Hell. First, the special marks of the inmates of Hell are described. They have two characteristics: then for the one who had rebelled, and preferred the worldly life [to the Hereafter] In other words, instead of remaining loyal to Allah and His Messenger and following their commands, they adopt the line of rejection and rebellion; and prefer the life of this world to that of the Hereafter. In other words, if he were to do a deed that gives comfort and pleasure in this world but punishment in the Hereafter, he would prefer the comforts and pleasure of this life to the pleasure of the next life. Those who are characterised by these two qualities the Blazing Fire, that is Hell, will be their abode, thus: (the Hell will be the abode

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And the Hell will be exposed for all who see, then for the one who had rebelled , and preferred the worldly life (to the Hereafter), the Hell will be the abode,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah refers to these two groups individually. Speaking of those destined for
Hell, Allah says, "As for the one who transgresses and who prefers the life of this world, then Hell shall certainly be his abode. " People generally cling to disbelief and refuse

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "When man will see that the same Day of accountability of which he was being foretold in the world, has come, he will start remembering each one of his misdeeds done in the world even before his records are handed over to him. Some people experience this even in the world. if at some time they come across a dangerous situation suddenly when death seems to be staring them in the face, their whole life-film flashes across their mind's eye all at once.
Here, in a few words, it has been told briefly what shall be the criterion of the final judgment in the Hereafter. One kind of the conduct of life in the world is that transgressing all bounds of service man should rebel against his God and should make up his mind that he would seek only the benefits and pleasures of this world in whatever way they could be sought and achieved. The other kind of conduct is that while man passes life in the world he should constantly keep in view the truth that ultimately one day he has to stand before his Lord, and should refrain from fulfilling the evil desires of the self only for the fear that if he earned an unlawful benefit in obedience to his self, or enjoyed an evil pleasure, what answer he would give to his Lord

Translation Sahih International

Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.(17)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The contrast is complete and parallel: the persistent rebels against Allah's Law, who preferred the lower life, are to dwell in the Fire of Punishment, while those who humbly feared the punishment of sin and believing in their Lord's warnings restrained their lower desires, will dwell in the Garden. See last note.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

: But he who had feared standing before his Rabb and curbed his evil desires[ shall have his home in paradise.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(But as for him who feared) upon committing a sin (to stand before his Lord) his standing before his Lord and abstains from engaging in sin (and restrained his soul from lust) from that which is unlawful, even though he desires it, this refers to Mus'ab Ibn 'Umayr.
(Lo! the Garden will be his home) Paradise will be the home of him who is thus.

Tafseer Jalalain

But as for him who feared the stance before his Lord, his standing before Him, and forbade the, evil-bidding, soul from [pursuing] desire, that leads to perdition as a result of [that person’s] lusting after [carnal] desires, Paradise will indeed be the abode: in sum the response [to idhā, ‘when’, verse 34] is that the disobedient one will be in the Fire and the obedient one in Paradise

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Thereafter, the special marks of the inmates of Paradise are described. They too have two characteristics (whereas for the one who feared to stand before his Lord, and restrained himself from the [evil] desire, 79:40).In other words, [I] the first characteristic of a God-fearing person is that, in this life, he shudders at the thought of appearing before Allah to account for his deeds on the Day of Reckoning; and [2] forbids the baser self from its evil desires. Those who are characterised by these two qualities have the good news that the Paradise will be their abode, thus:(the Paradise will be the abode.. . .79:41)
Three Levels of Suppressing [the Base] Self The verse under comment lays down two conditions of attaining the abode in Paradise, but carefully considered, the two conditions, in terms of consequence, are one. The first condition is the fear of accountability in the presence of Allah. The second condition is to restrain oneself from the evil desires. As a matter of fact, fear of Allah causes one to restrain oneself from evil desires. Qadi Thana'ullah Panipati has written in his Tafsir
Mazhar; that there are three levels of suppressing evil desires, as follows: The first level is that one avoids false beliefs which are in conflict or incompatible with express texts [of the Holy Qur7Zn and established Sunnahl and consensus of [the righteous] predecessors. In this level, a person deserves to be called 'Sunn~Musliml. The second level is the middle one. A person, in this stage, may think of committing sin. Then he may remember that he has to account for his deeds before Allah [on the Day of Reckoning]. As a result, he abandons the thought of committing sin. The complement to this level is that one abstains from doubtful things and those acts that are permissible in themselves, but there is apprehension that if committed, they may lead one to slip into impermissible acts. Sayyidna Nu'mZn Ibn Bash& & narrates that the Holy Prophet $& said: "He who abstained from doubtful things has protected his honour and religion. He who indulged in doubtful things will eventually indulge in forbidden things." The expression 'doubtful things' signifies those acts about which one is not certain whether they are permissible or not, both possibilities being equal. Let us consider a few examples: if a person is ill and can take [wet] ablution, but he is not sure whether taking [wet] ablution in this state would be harmful. Thus the permissibility of dry ablution (tayammum) becomes doubtful. Likewise a person is able to perform prayers in a standing position, but feels great difficulty. He is now in doubt whether or not it is permissible for him to perform prayers in a sitting position. On such occasions, one should abandon the doubtful thing or act, and prefer what is definitely certain. This is taqwa and the middle course of
suppressing the selfish desires. Tricks of the Base Self There are acts whose sinful nature is obvious to every one. The selfish desires prompting to such sinful acts may be suppressed by one's deliberate efforts and firm resolution. However, there are evils prompted by one's base self even during his acts of worship and other good deeds, such as self-conceit, ('Ujb) vanity, (Kibr), and show off (Riya'). These are such sins whose sinful nature is often not discoverable to a common person, still they are very severe and firmly ingrained evil desires of one's base self. One is at times deceived by them, because he continues to think that his actions are right. It is extremely necessary that first and foremost this lower self must be suppressed. But this cannot be achieved by one on his own. It is necessary for one to search for a perfect spiritual master (Ash-shaikhul-hamil), and hand himself over to him for guidance. He acts as the authentic guide and the only one to whom a seeker of Truth should turn in his quest and follow his advice. In turning to the spiritual master, the seeker is turning to Allah Almighty. The shaikh engages him in the spiritual struggle and endeavour [muj Ehadahl against the passions and tendencies of the lower self ['uyub-un-nafsl. Shaikh Imam says that in his young age he was a carpenter. He found laziness, and felt darkness in his inner self. So, he intended to keep fasts for a few days so that he may get rid of the laziness and darkness. Co-incidentally, one day, while he was fasting, he went up to Shaikh Imam Baha'uddin Naqshband. The Shaikh called for meals for his guests. He was also invited to partake of the meal, and the Shaikh said: "He is a very bad slave who is the slave of his base self that misleads him. It is better to partake of meal than to keep fast with evil desires of the base self." Shaikh Karkh T says that at that moment he realised that (by fasting) he was falling prey to self-complacency, self-conceit and pride, which the Shaikh Naqshband T perceived. On that occasion, Shaikh Karkhi realised that a spiritual master's permission and guidance is needed to take up an optional act of worship, because the spiritual master is aware of the hidden tricks of the evil desires of the base self. If an optional act of worship will be accompanied by such motives, the will put a stop to it [for remedial purposes]. He asked Shaikh Naqshbandi: "If I cannot find a Shaikh who is called in Sufi terms as fini fillah and baqi billah, (the explanation is coming in the next paragraph.)what must I do?" He replied: "Recite istighfar abundantly and recite istighfar [seek Allah's pardon] twenty times regularly after every prayer, so that it works out to a hundred times reciting it five times a day." The Holy Prophet &!$ is reported to have said: "Sometimes I feel my heart disturbed, and I recite istighfar [seek Allah's pardon] a hundred times a day." The third and the highest level of suppression of the base self is that Siirah An-NZzibZt : 79 : 1 - 46 702 by abundant d h i k r u l l a h [remembrance of Allah] and constant mujahadah [spiritual struggle and endeavour against the evil passions] and riyadah [ascetic discipline], one's self (nafs) is so much cleansed and purified that the desires that tempts him to evil are totally eliminated. This is the special stage of wiltiyah [Divine friendship], which in Sufi Terminology is called fin; fillah and baqi billah. The Qur'an says regarding such people [addressing the Satan]:'My servants are such that you have no power over them [15:4211 The following Tradition applies to the same category of wali: 'None of you can be a [perfect] believer unless his [base] desires of self follow my teachings.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

whereas for the one who feared to stand before his Lord, and restrained his self from the (evil) desire, the Paradise will be the abode.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah then speaks about the second type of person when He says, "As for the
one who fears standing before his Lord and who restrains himself from carnal passions,
then Heaven shall definitely be his abode. " Whenever a person wants to do good and
abstain from evil, his carnal self presents an obstacle. One's carnal self wants
only pleasure and enjoyment and loves the world for this. It has no inclination
for the Hereafter because its concern is only for the pleasures of this world. It will
therefore spur a person on to commit sins and to lead a life of recklessness.
Therefore, when a person gains control over his carnal self (his Nafs), he will be
able to abstain from sin and will content himself with what is Halal (lawful)
instead of Haram (unlawful). Such people will attain the high ranks of Heaven.

The person who fears standing for reckoning before Allah will receive two
gardens of Heaven, as Allah says in Surah Rahman, "The one who fears standing in
the presence of his Lord shall have two gardens." [Surah 55, verse 46]

Sayyidina Jabir narrates that the Holy Prophet Pbuh said, "I
fear most for my Ummah that they follow the dictates of their Nafs (Carnal self)
and that they entertain lengthy hopes. The desires of the Nafs (carnal self)
prevents one from the truth and lengthy hopes make one forget about the
Akhirah (Hereafter). This world is travelling and leaving while the Akhirah
(Hereafter) is travelling and approaching Each has its sons, so if you can avoid
being a son of this world then do so. Today you are in the place of deeds (the
world) where there is no reckoning and tomorrow you will be in the Akhirah
(Hereafter) where there are no deeds (only reckoning).
surah An-Nazi'at 79: 34-46 341 Anwar-ul-Bayan (v. 10)

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

what answer he would give to his Lord. The criterion of the judgment in the Hereafter will be which of the two kinds of conduct he adopted in the world. If he had adopted the first kind of conduct, his permanent abode would be Hell, and if he had adopted the second kind of conduct, his permanent home would be Paradise.

Translation Sahih International

And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself(18)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Only Allah can reveal it. But were it known, "heavy
were its burden through the heavens and the earth".Our time has no sort of comparison with the timeless state in the new spiritual World in which the final Judgement will take place. Nor can its limits—how long it will last—be set except in the Will of Almighty Allah, Lord of Supreme Wisdom, Justice, and Goodness: 11:107-108. But it is near, in the sense explained The warning is only effective for those who believe in Allah and in the Final Account. Such men immediately turn in repentance to Allah, and it is to lead such men and help them, that Prophets are sent.
Tags-People asking about The Judgement day

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

They ask you about the Hour: “When will it come?”[42] But it is not for you to know or tell its timing.[43] Only your Rabb knows when it will come.[44] You are but a Warner to him who fears it.[45] On that Day, when they shall see it, they shall feel as if they had stayed in this world only one evening or one morning.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(They ask thee) the disbelievers of Mecca ask you, O Muhammad, (of the Hour) about the advent of the Hour: (when will it come to port?) When is it going to happen? Because they disbelieved in it. (Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof?) What has it to do with you that you should mention it to them? (Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof) the knowledge of its timing belongs to Allah (Thou art but a warner) you are but a warning messenger by means of the Qur'an (unto him who feareth it) to him who fears its advent. (On the day when they behold it) i.e. the Hour, (it will be as if they had but tarried) in the graves (for an evening) the duration of an evening (or the morn thereof) or the duration of one morning'.
And of the surah in which the Blind Man is mentioned, which is all Meccan and consists of 40 verses, 133 words and 533 letters

Tafseer Jalalain

They, that is, the disbelievers of Mecca, will ask you about the Hour: when will it set in?, when will it come to pass and when will it begin? What have you to do with the mention of it?, in other words, you have no knowledge of it in order to mention it. With your Lord it belongs ultimately, ultimate knowledge of it [lies with Him]; none other than Him has any knowledge of it.You are only a warner for, your warning will only benefit, the one who fears it.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Towards the end of the Surah, the Holy Qur'an responds to the mala fide demand of the infidels that the Holy Prophet should let them know the exact date and time of the Day of Judgement. They are told that knowledge of the time and date is within Allah's own special prerogative. Allah's consummate wisdom did not pass the information to any angel or Prophet Therefore, the demand is futile They ask you about the Hour (the Day of Judgment) as to when it will take place. In which capacity are you to tell this? With your Lord is the final word about it. You are only a Warner for anyone who fears it. The day they will see it, it will seem to them as if they did not live (in the world), but only for one afternoon or for the morning thereof.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

They ask you (O Prophet,) about the Hour (the Day of Judgment) as to when it will take place. [42] In which capacity are you to tell this? [43] With your Lord is the final word about it. [ 44] You are only a wamer for
anyone who fears it. [ 45] The day they will see it, it will seem to them as if they did not live (in the world) but only for one afternoon or for the morning thereof. [46]

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Addressing the Holy Prophet A.S Allah says, "They ask you about
when Judgment day will take place/' The disbelievers actually asked about
Judgment day mockingly because they did not really want to know when it will
occur. Allah says to the Holy Prophet Pbuh "What have you to tell about
it?" The Holy Prophet Pbuh could not inform them about when
judgment day will take place because he was not informed about its date. "To
your Lord belongs (the knowledge of) its term. "Allah says in Surah A'raf, "They ask
you regarding Judgment day, when will it occur? Say, 'The knowledge of this is with my
lord. Only He will manifest it on its time. It will be weighty on the heavens and the
earth and will appear suddenly.' They ask you as if you have perfect knowledge of it. Say, The knowledge of this is only with Allah, but most people do not know." [Surah 7, verse187]
Allah says, "You are a warner only to him who fears it. " Those who have no
concern for Judgment day will not heed a thousand warnings of Judgment day.
However, a single warning suffices for the one who is concerned about his plight
in the Akhirah {Hereafter).
Allah concludes the Surah by saying, "The day when they see it will seem as if
they lived only an evening or a morning. " People persistently ask about the date of
Judgment Day as if they are looking forward to it. All they intend doing is to
mock the belief. However, when they see Judgment day taking place before their
very eyes, they will reg ref their ways and their lives of tens or even hundreds of
years will seem even less than a day. The life which they thought would never
end, will seem like only a dream.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The disbelievers of Makkah asked this question of the Holy Prophet over and over again. By this they did not mean to know the time and date of the coming of Resurrection but to mock it. (For further explanation, see E.N. 35 of Surah Al-Mulk).
This also we have explained in E.N. 36 of Surah Al-Mulk above. As for the words "you are only a Warner to him who fears it", they do not mean that it is not your duty to warn those who do not fear, but it means: "Your warning will benefit only him who fears the coming of that Day."
This theme has occurred at several places in the Qur'an and been explained in the corresponding Notes. For it, see E.N. 53 of Yunus, E.N. 56 of Bani Isra'il, E.N. 80 of Ta Ha, E.N. 101 of Al-Mu'minun, E.N.'s 81, 82 of ArRum, E.N. 48 of Ya Sin. Besides, this theme has also occurred in Al-Ahqaf: 35 but we have not explained it there for fear of repetition.
