When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness](1)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded
up; Verses 1 to 13 are conditional clauses, and the substantive clause is in verse.The time will come when nature's processes as we know them will cease to function, and the soul will only then know by self-conviction the results of its actions. With reference to an individual soul, its resurrection is its supreme crisis: the whole world of sense, and even of imagination and reason, melts away, and its whole spiritual scroll is laid bare before it.The conditional clauses are twelve, in two groups of six. The first six affect the outer or physical life of man; the last six, his inmost spiritual life. Let us take them one by one. (1) The biggest factor affecting us in the external physical World is the light, heat, and perhaps electric or magnetic energy of the sun. The sun is the source of all the light, heat, and energy, and indeed the source and support of all physical life that we know. It is the biggest factor and yet most remote from us in our solar system. Yet the sources of our inner spiritual life will be greater and more lasting, for they will survive it. The sun as the centre of our solar system also stands as a symbol of the present order of things. The physical forces, as defined in Newton's laws of Matter and Attraction, will also break up with the break-up of the sun. Is folded up: is folded up, or twisted up, like a sheet or garment.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

When the Sun seizes to shine;

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

And from his narration on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that he said regarding the interpretation of Allah's saying (When the sun is overthrown): '(When the sun is overthrown) it is also said that He says: when the sun is turned around as one turns a turban and is then thrown into the veil of light; it is also said this means: when the light of the sun vanishes.

Tafseer Jalalain

When the sun is folded away, enfolded and stripped of its light,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

1(When the sun will be folded up ... 8l:l) The word kawwara is derived from Takwir which denotes for the sun 'to lose its light'. ' Hasan Basri has attached this interpretation to it. Another sense of the word is 'to cause to fall'. Rabi' Ibn Khaitham assigns the following interpretation to this verse: The Sun will be thrown into the ocean, and as a result of its heat the entire ocean will turn into fire. The two interpretations are not contradictory. They may be reconciled thus: first, its light will be put off and then it may be thrown into the ocean.Sahih Al-Bukhari records from Hazrat Abu Hurairah that the Holy Prophet said that on the Day of Resurrection the Sun and the Moon would be thrown into the ocean. Musnad of Bazzar has the addition that they will be thrown into Hell. Ibn AbI Hatim, Ibn Abi Ad-Dunya and Abush-Shaikh stated that on the Day of Resurrection Allah will thow the Sun, the Moon and a11 stars into the ocean. Then a violent wind will blow over them, as a result of which the entire ocean will turn into fire. Thus it is correct to say that the Sun and the Moon will be put into the ocean. It is likewise correct to say that they will be put into Hell, because the entire ocean at that time will have been turned into Hell. [Derived from Mazhari and Qurtubi]

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

This is the literal meaning of the word Takwir used in the holy text.The accurate nature of folding the Sun is not presently known.At times , the word is used to denote the termination of the function of an object. In this sense, it may be taken to mean here that the Sun will lose its light. Some exegetes have translated the verse accordingly.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

When the sun loses its light." The literal meaning of the Arabic word "kuwwirat" (translated above as "loses its light" ) is "to fold". It is well within Allah's power to literally fold the sun. However, commentators like Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas (R.A),Sayyidina Hasan (R.A) Sayyidina Qatadah (R.A) and Sayyidina Mujahid(R.A) say that the light of the sun will be folded i.e. the sun will lose its light.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This is a matchless metaphor for causing the sun to lose its light. Takwir means to fold up; hence takwir al- `amamah for folding up the turban on the head. Here, the light which radiates from the sun and spreads throughout the solar system has been likened to the turban and it has been said that on the Resurrection Day the turban will be folded up about the sun and its radiation will fade.

Translation Sahih International

And when the stars fall, dispersing,(2)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Next after the sun, we can derive faint lights from the innumerable stars in the firmament. For all the ages of which we have any record, these stars have remained fixed. Nothing can be more fixed: yet they can and will fail.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

When the stars lose their luster

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And when the stars fall) on the face of the earth.

Tafseer Jalalain

and when the stars scatter, [when] they are extinguished and hurtle down towards the earth.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The word inkadarat is derived from inkidar and it denotes 'to fall'. The righteous predecessors have interpreted it thus. It signifies that all the stars from the sky will fall into the oceans as explained in the preceding verses.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And when the stars will swoop down

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, when the force which is keeping them in their orbits and positions is loosened and all the stars and planets will scatter in the universe. The word inkidar also indicates that they will not only scatter away but will also grow dark.

And when the mountains are removed(3)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

On our own earth the mountains-the "eternal hills'-seem the
most striking examples of stability; yet they will be swept away like a mirage, as if they had never existed.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

when the mountains are blown away;

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And when the mountains will be set in motion;

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

In other words, the earth also will lose its force of gravity because of which the mountains have weight and are firmly set in the earth. Thus, when there is no more gravity the mountains will be uprooted from their places and becoming weightless will start moving and flying as the clouds move in the atmosphere.

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

And when full-term she-camels are neglected(4)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The type of Arab property, as well as the type of the Arab pet, was the camel, and the most precious camel was the she-camel just about to be delivered of her young. She would in normal times be most sedulously cared for. But when all our landmarks of this life vanish, even she would be left unattended. Nothing would then be as it is now.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

when the ten-month pregnant she-camels are left unattended;

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And when the camels big with young are abandoned) because they are preoccupied with their own selves,

Tafseer Jalalain

and when the pregnant camels are neglected, abandoned without a herdsman or anyone to milk them, on account of the matter that has come over them — even though [previously] no wealth was dearer to them than these [pregnant camels];

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The Arabic word 'ishar is the plural of the word 'ushara' and is applied to she-camels having ten months pregnancy. Such she-camels were considered by the Arabs to be a very valuable asset, because they expected her to give birth to more camels and abundant milk. As such, they used to protect her and never left her free. The verse referring to this custom of the Arabs, who were the immediate addressees, depicts the horrible scene of the Doomsday when even the most favorite wealth, like such a she-camel, will be abandoned and neglected by its owners because of the calamity they will be facing.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

She-camel was the most favourite item of wealth in Arabia, especially when she is ten months pregnant , as she was expected to deliver a baby to add to one’s wealth. Such she-camels used to be preserved carefully, and were not abandoned except in a great state of panic on the Day of Qiyamah (The Day of Judgement).

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

“When Pregnant camels are forsaken.” The Arabic word “ishar”(translated as pregnant camels) is plural of the word “ashra” which refers to a camel that is in her tenth month of pregnancy . Although such an animal is generally prized , no one will be interested in her when Judgement of Day takes place. The same will apply to everything else that people prize.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

this was by far the best way of giving an idea of the severities and horrors of resurrection to the arabs. before the buses and trucks of the present day there was nothing more precious for the arabs than the she-camel just about to give birth to her young. in this state she was most sedulously looked after and cared for, so that she is not lost, stolen, or harmed in any way. the people's becoming heedless of such she-camels, in fact, meant that at that time they would be so stunned as to become unmindful of their most precious possessions.

And when the wild beasts are gathered(5)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

In the present world, the wild animals fear each other. and they all fear man and normally keep away from human habitations. But when this order passes away there will be scarcely any differentiation between human habitation and the wilds of the forest.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

when the wild beasts are brought together;

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And when the wild beasts are herded together) for retaliation; and it is also said this means: when they are dead,

Tafseer Jalalain

and when the wild beasts are mustered, [when they are] brought together after being resurrected so that each of them may retaliate against the other, before becoming dust;

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

The wild animals will join one another due to the panic.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

When wild animals are gathered." While some commentators interpret the verse to mean that all wild animals will die on the Day of Judgment, others interpret it to mean that retribution will be taken from every animal that oppressed another in any way. This interpretation is in keeping with a hadith in which it is mentioned that a hornless goat will have revenge from the horned goat that butted it in the world . When revenge is exacted from all the animals, Allah will command them, " Become dust!" Mention of a goat is merely by way of example because the same will apply to all animals. In fact, a hadith reported in "Ruhul Ma'ani" states that revenge will even be exacted from ants. This will of course take place after the second blowing of the trumpet. If this interpretation is applied, it may be said that the verses of the Surah merely state the events of Judgment Day collectively without specifying the sequence.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

When a general calamity befalls the world, all kinds of beasts and animals gather together in one place.Then neither the snake bites, nor the tiger kills and devours.

Translation Sahih International

And when the seas are filled with flame(6)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The Oceans which now keep their bounds, will surge and boil over and overwhelm all landmarks. At present waters seems to have reached their fixed and normal levels but, the whole equilibrium will then be disturbed. Such will be the complete wreck of this transitory world ,at the approach of the dawn of the Permanent reality. But these are physical symbols, relating to the outer nature surrounding the physical nature of man. The remaining six viz.,.. the 7th to the 12th describe the ordering of the new World. from which all present seeming incongruities will be removed.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

When the oceans are set ablaze;

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And when the seas rise) and mix with each other, the sweet seas and the salty seas, such that they become one sea; and it is also said this means: when they become a burning site,

Tafseer Jalalain

and when the seas are set afire (read sujirat or sujjirat), [when] they are set alight and become [a mass of] fire;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

and when the seas will be flared up ... 81:6). The word
sujjirat derived from tasjir and it signifies 'to set ablaze'. Sayyidna Ibn 'Abbas & assigns this interpretation to the word in this context. Another sense of the word is 'to fill' and a third sense of the word is 'to mix or admix'. Some commentators have interpreted it in this sense. None of these interpretations is contradictory to each other. First, the salt and sweet water are admixed and the rivers are made to flow forth into the sea; then the seas will meet together and become one and having more water; then the seas will be set on fire; and then the Sun and the Moon and the stars will be thrown into the water. Then all the water will be turned into fire which will become part of Hell. [Mazharil]

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

The word tasjir originally used in the text means to kindle or fuel the fire. The exegetes have explained that the Seas will first overflow, and then will turn into fire. All these events mentioned up to verse 6 will occur after the first blowing of the trumpet, while the events mentioned onwards will occur after the second blowing of the trumpet.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

When the oceans are set alight." " Ruhul Ma' ani" states that the waters of the ocean will be heated and eventually dried up. Fire will then take its place.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The word sujjirat as used in the original in passive voice from tasjir in the past tense. Tasjir means to kindle fire in the oven. Apparently it seems strange that on the Resurrection Day fire would blaze up in the oceans. But if the truth about water is kept in view, nothing would seem strange. It is a miracle of God that He combined oxygen and hydrogen, one of which helps kindle the fire and the other gets kindled of itself and by the combination of both He created a substance like water which is used to put out fire. A simple manifestation of Allah's power is enough to change this composition of water so that the two gases are separated and begin to burn and help cause a blaze, which is their basic characteristic.

And when the souls are paired(7)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

where the sorting out into three classes is mentioned,.viz.,, Those Nearest to Allah, the Companions of the right hand, and the Companions of the Left Hand. This was a sort of broad general division. The meaning in this passage is wider.Whereas in this world of probation, good is mixed with evil, knowledge with ignorance, power with arrogance and so on,in the new world of Reality, all true values will be restored, and like will consort with like, for it will be a world of perfect Peace ,Harmony and Justice.

and when the souls are reunited with their bodies.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And when souls are reunited) in pairs; it is also said this means: when souls are reunited with their companions: the believer with the maiden of Paradise and the disbeliever with Satan; the righteous with the righteous and the sinful with the sinful,

Tafseer Jalalain

and when the souls are coupled, [when they are] paired up with their bodies;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

and when the people will be arranged in categories ... 81:7). It means that the people on the Plain of Gathering will be grouped, like with like, in terms of belief and deeds. Disbelievers will be grouped together and believers will be grouped together. There are differences between the deeds and habits of believers and there are differences between the deeds and habits of disbelievers. The non-believers will be re-grouped according to their essential characteristics and the Muslims too will be re-grouped according to their essential characteristics as is reported in Baihaqi on the authority of Sayyidna Nu'man Ibn Bashir (R.A) that Sayyidna 'Umar Ibn Khattab (R.A) said that the people doing similar deeds, good or bad, will be joined together. For example, the knowledgeable persons from among the Muslims who were serving Islamic studies will be made into one group; the people who devoted themselves for worship will be made into another group; the people performing jiha will be together, and the people whose main characteristic was to spend in charities will be gathered in one place.On the other hand, those who were involved in wicked activities like thieves, robbers, adulterers will also be assembled in their respective groups. Sayyidna Umar (R.A) based this statement on the verse of the Holy Qur'an in which Allah says in Surah Al-waqi’ah: وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَٰثَةً [and you will be (divided into) three categories. (56:7) It is mentioned further in that Surah that out of the three categories, two will attain salvation who are named as the 'foremost' and 'people of the right' while another group, namely the 'people of the left' will be comprised of the infidels.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

When souls are joined ." After the disbelievers are separated from the believers, the members of each group will be joined with each other. Allah says in Surah Ibrahim, " On that day you will see the criminals shackled together in fetters."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

From here begins mention of the second stage of Resurrection
That is, men will be resurrected precisely in the state as they lived in the world before death with body and soul together.

Translation Sahih International

And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked(8)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

In this world of sin and sorrow, much unjust suffering is caused, and innocent lives sacrificed, without a trace being left, by which offenders can be brought to justice. A striking example before the Quraish was female infanticide.The crime was committed in the guise of social plausibility in secret collusion, and no question was asked here. But in the world of Justice, full questions will be asked, and the victim herself-dumb here-will be able to give evidence, for she had committed no crime herself. The proofs will be drawn from the very means used for concealment.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

When the infant girl buried alive (here reference is made to the pre-Islamic Arab barbarism of burying new born girls alive) is questioned , for what sin she was killed.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And when the girl child that was buried alive is asked) i.e. when she asks her father.(For what sin she was slain) for what sin did you kill me; it is also said that this means: when the one who killed her is asked: for what sin did you kill her,

Tafseer Jalalain

and when the girl buried-alive, the young girl buried alive for fear of shame and impoverishment, asks — in rebuke of its slayer —
for what sin she was slain (sa’alat, ‘asks’: a variant reading has su’ilat, ‘[she] is asked’, narrating the address directed to her, to which she then responds by saying, ‘I was slain without [having committed] any sin’);

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

and when the girl-child that was buried alive will be asked, for what sin she was killed ... 81:8-9) The word mau'udah is the girl-child buried alive. It was a common practice in pre-Islamic time of ignorance that people would take the birth of a girl as a matter of shame for their fathers, and therefore they would bury them alive as soon as they were born. Islam has abolished this barbaric practice completely.This verse, while depicting the scene of Resurrection, mentions that the girls who were buried alive will be questioned for what crime they were killed. Apparently, it seems that the question will be posed to the girl herself. This will give the victim an opportunity to prove her complete innocence and thus the perpetrators of this crime will be hauled up in the Divine Court of Justice, and will be duly punished for their wrongdoing.It is also possible that the question

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

As many people in Arabia took the birth of a girls as a curse and a cause of shame for them, thus if their wives gave birth to a female baby , they used to bury her alive. This barbaric custom is referred to here. The question asked from the girl is in fact the question posed to her father who was responsible for such a heinous offence.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

When the girl buried alive will be asked for what sin she was killed ." The Arab
Polytheists during the period of ignorance disliked having daughters and used to
bury their infant daughters alive. Allah says in Surah Nahl, "When any of them is
given the glad tidings of a daughter, his face darkens and he suppresses his fury. He hides from the people because of the evil tidings that he received . Must he keep her with disgrace or bury her in the sand ? Evil indeed is the decision that he takes !" Such people will be taken to task on the Day of Judgment.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The style of this verse reflects an intensity of rage and fury inconceivable in common life. The parents who buried their daughters alive, would be so contemptible in the-sight of Allah that they would not be asked: "Why did you kill the innocent infant?" But disregarding them the innocent girl will be asked: "For what crime were you slain?" And she will tell her story how cruelly she had been treated by her barbarous parents and buried alive. Besides, two vast themes have been compressed into this brief verse, which though not expressed in words, are reflected by its style and tenor. First that in it the Arabs have been made to realize what depths of moral depravity they have touched because of their ignorance in that they buried their own children alive; yet they insist that they would persist in the same ignorance and would not accept the reform that Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace) was trying to bring about in their corrupted society. Second, that an express argument has been given in it of the necessity and
inevitability of the Hereafter. The case of the infant girl who was buried alive, should be decided and settled justly at some tune, and there should necessarily be a time when the cruel people who committed this heinous crime, should be called to account for it, for there was none in the world to hear the cries of complaint raised by the poor soul. This act was looked upon with approval by the depraved society;neither the parents felt any remorse for it, nor anybody in the family censured them, nor the society took any notice of it. Then, should this monstrosity remain wholly unpunished in the Kingdom of God?This barbaric custom of burying the female infants alive had become widespread in ancient Arabia for different reasons. One reason was economic hardship because of which the people wanted to have fewer dependents so that they should not have to bear the burden of bringing up many children. Male offspring were brought up in the hope that they would later help in earning a living, but the female offspring were killed for the fear that they would have to be reared till they matured and then given away in marriage. Second, the widespread chaos because of which the male children were brought up in order to have more and more helpers and supporters; but daughters were killed because in tribal wars they had to be protected instead of being useful in any way for defense. Third, another aspect of the common chaos also was that when the hostile tribes raided each other and captured girls they would either keep them as slave-girls or sell them to others. For these reasons the practice that had become common in Arabia was that at childbirth a pit was kept dug out ready for use by the woman so that if a girl was born, she was immediately cast into it and buried alive. And if sometimes the mother was not inclined to act
thus, or the people of the family disapproved of it, the father would rear her for some time half-heartedly, and then finding time would take her to the desert to be buried alive. This tyranny and hard-heartedness was once described by a person before the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) himself. According to a Hadith related in the first chapter of Sunan Darimi, a man came to the Holy Prophet and related this incident of his pre-Islamic days of ignorance: "I had a daughter who was much attached to me. When I called her, she would come running to me. One day I called her and took her out with me. On the way we came across a well. Holding her by the hand I pushed her into the well. Her last words that I heard were:
Oh father, oh father!!" Hearing this the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) wept and tears started falling from his eyes One of those present on the occasion said: O man, you have grieved the Holy Prophet.
The Holy Prophet said: Do not stop him, let him question about what he feels so strongly now. Then the Holy Prophet asked him to narrate his story once again. When he narrated it again the Holy Prophet wept so bitterly that his beard became we with tears. Then he said to the man: "Allah has forgiven that you did in the days of ignorance: now turn to Him in repentance.'
It is not correct to think that the people of Arabia had no feeling of the baseness of this hideous, inhuman act. Obviously, no society, however corrupted it may be, can be utterly devoid of the feeling that such tyrannical acts are evil. That is why the Holy Qur'an has not dwelt upon the vileness of this act, but has only referred to it in awe-inspiring words to the effect: "A time will come when the girl who was buried alive, will be asked for what crime she was slain?" The history of Arabia also shows that many people in the pre-Islamic days of ignorance had a feeling that the practice was vile and wicked. According to Tabarani, Sa`sa'ah bin Najiyah al-Mujashi`i, grandfather of the poet, Farazdaq, said to the Holy Prophet:
"O Messenger of Allah, during the days of ignorance I have done some good works also among which one is that I saved 360 girls from being buried alive: I gave two camels each as ransom to save their lives. Shall I get any reward for this?" The Holy Prophet replied; "Yes, there is a reward for you, and it is this that Allah has blessed you with Islam."
As a matter of fact, a great blessing of the blessings of Islam is that it not only did put an end to this inhuman practice in Arabia but even wiped out the concept that the birth of a daughter was in any way a
calamity, which should be endured unwillingly. On the contrary, Islam taught that bringing up daughters, giving them good education and enabling them to become good housewives, is an act of great merit and virtue. The way the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) changed the common concept of the people in respect of girls can be judged from his many sayings which have been reported in the Hadith. As for example, we reproduce some of these below:
"The person who is put to a test because of the birth of the daughters and then he treats them
generously, they will become a means of rescue for him from Hell." (Bukhari, Muslim).
"The one who brought up two girls till they attained their maturity, will appear along with me on the Resurrection Day ... Saying this the Holy Prophet jointed and raised his fingers. (Muslim).
"The one who brought up three daughters, or sisters, taught then good manners and treated them with kindness until they became self-sufficient. Allah will make Paradise obligatory for him. A man asked: what about two, O Messenger of Allah? The Holy Prophet replied: the same for two." Ibn `Abbas, the reporter of the Hadith, says: "Had the people at that time asked in respect of one daughter, the Holy Prophet would have also given the same reply about her. " (Sharh as-Sunnh).
"The one who has a daughter born to him and he does not bury her alive, nor keeps her in disgrace, nor prefers his son to her, Allah will admit him to Paradise." (Abu Da'ud).
"The one who has three daughters born to him, and he is patient over them, and clothes them well according to his means, they will become a means of rescue for him from Hell. " (Bukhari, Al-Adab al-Mufrad, Ibn Majah).
"The Muslim who has two daughters and he looks after them well, they will lead him to Paradise." (Bukhari: Al-Adab al-Mufrad).
This is the teaching which completely changed the viewpoint of the people about girls not only in Arabia but among all the nations of the world, which later become blessed with Islam.

record of deeds on the Day of Judgment. The successful ones will receive theirs
in their right hands while the unsuccessful ones will receive theirs in their left
hands. Allah says in Surah Bani Isra'Il, "We shall cast every person's record of deeds upon his neck. On the Day of judgment We shall take out for him a book that he will see opened before him. 'Read your book. Today you are a sufficient witness against yourself "
[ Surah 17, verses 13,14.]
Allah says in Surah Kahf, "The record of deeds shall be placed and you
will see the sinners afraid of what is contained in them. They will say, 'Woe be to us! What is with this book that it does not leave anything small or large unrecorded?' They will find their deeds present and your Lord shall not oppress anyone. " [ Surah 18, verse 50 ]

The Sky, or Heaven as standing for both the Blazing Fire and the Garden, the Home of the Hereafter. and when the heaven is stripped off, torn away from its place, just as the skin of a sheep is stripped off;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The word kushitat is derived from kasht, and it literally means 'to strip off the skin of an animal. Probably, this condition will prevail at the first blowing of the Horn, which will happen in this world. The stars, the Sun and the Moon that contributed to the beauty of the sky will all lose their light and lustre and will be thrown into the ocean. The outlook of the sky will be changed. This phenomenon is termed in this verse as: 'The sky will be stripped off. Some commentators interpret the word kasht in the sense of 'folding up'. The verse, according to them, purports to say that the sky that surrounds the upper atmosphere over our heads will be folded up.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

There are some stars that in the course of their orbit, they start receding back for some time, then restart proceeding onwards, and sometimes they vanish from the scene. Swearing by them is an indication that all their movements are by the will and command of Allah Almighty.

That is, everything which is hidden from view now will become visible. Now one can only see empty space, or the clouds, hanging dust, the moon, the sun or stars, but at that time the Kingdom of God will appear in full view before the people, without any veil in between, in its true reality.

And when Paradise is brought near,(13)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

This is the conclusion. It is only on such conditions that the soul reaches its full realisation. Put forward:"the Deeds which his hands have sent forth"

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Then each soul shall know what it has brought;

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Then) every soul will know) every soul whether it is righteous or sinful will know at that point (what it hath made ready) what it has sent forth of good or evil.

Tafseer Jalalain

[then] a soul, every soul, at the time of the [occurrence of the] things mentioned, which is the Day of Resurrection, will know what it has presented, of good or evil.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(then everyone will know what he [or she] has put forward ... 81:14). It means that when Resurrection, with all the horrors mentioned above, will take place, man will realise what he has brought with him. The word 'what' here refers to his good and bad deeds, all of which will be in front of him, either in the form of the Record of Deeds that will be given in his hands or his deeds will assume a specific body shape as is understood from certain Traditions. Allah knows best! Having described the horrors of Resurrection, and the accountability of deeds, Allah swears an oath by a few stars to confirm that the Qur'an is the truth that has been sent down, fully protected from any interruption or distortion, and that the Prophet $& who has received it is a great personality, and the angel (Jibra'il who descended with it was known to him before hand. Therefore, there can be no room for any doubt about its veracity. The verses here swear an oath by five stars which the ancient Greeks called khamsah mutahayyirah or 'the five wandering stars ', since they seemed to stray irregularly across the sky. At times they are seen moving from East to West, and at others, from West to East. Different reasons have been assigned to their irregular movements. The ancient Greeks hold several contradictory explanations for this. The research of modern scientists concurs with some of the ancient philosophers, and differs from some others. The Creator alone knows the truth and reality. The scientists merely guess and conjecture which may be wrong. The Qur'an has, therefore, not involved its readers in such a useless debate. Allah showed us what was beneficial, that is, to observe the Divine Omnipotence, His Consummate Wisdom and to repose our faith in Him.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

then everyone will know what he (or she) has put forward.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

"When Heaven will be brought close" to the pious just as Hell will be brought close to the disbelievers; as Allah says in Surah Shu'ara, "Heaven will be brought close to the pious while Hell will be revealed to the deviant ones." [ Surah 26, verses 90,91 ] When all these events will take place, "On that day every soul will know what (deeds) it had presented" People will then realise whether they are destined for Heaven or for Hell.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, in the Plain of Resurrection, when the hearing of the cases of the people will be in progress, the blazing fire of Hell also will be in full view, and Paradise also with all its blessings will be visible to all, so that the wicked should know what they are being deprived of and where they are going to be cast, and the righteous as well should know what they are being saved from and with what being blessed and honored.

A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].(14)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

For the witness that the heavenly bodies bear to the power, beauty, and goodness of Allah, in sending his Revelation for the significance of an adjuration in the Qur -an. The appeal here is made to three things, the Planets, the Night, and the Dawn. ( 1) The Planets have a retrograde and a forward motion, and, during occultation, hide or disappear behind the sun or moon, or are otherwise invisible or appear stationary. They behave differently from the millions of stars around them. Yet they are not mere erratic bodies, but obey definite laws, and evidence the power and wisdom of Allah. How the Night gradually declines after its height at midnight! It seems gradually to steal away, and as Dawn approaches, to merge into Day. So a soul in spiritual darkness gradually awakes to its spiritual Dawn through Revelation. The slow “breathing out” of the darkness by the Dawn, shows us by beautiful imagery, that these wonderful operations, of which people in their ignorance are frightened if they have to do with darkness, are really beneficent operations of Allah. They have nothing to do with evil spirits, or witches, or magic. For three questions were actually raised about the holy Prophet’s Ministry by the ignorant. ( 1 ) Did his wonderful works come from himself and not from Allah? ( 2) Was he possessed of an evil spirit? In other words, was he mad? For that was the theory of madness then current. (3) Was he a soothsayer, or necromancer, or magician? For he had virtues, powers and eloquence, so extraordinary that they could not understand him. They are told here that all their three theories were foolish. The Revelation was really from Allah. Their wonder should cease if they observe the daily miracles worked round them in nature. The bringer of Allah’s Message was the angel Gabriel, and not an evil spirit.
Not only was the bringer of the Revelation, Gabriel, an honourable Messenger, incapable of deceit, but he had in the angelic kingdom, rank and authority before Allah’s Throne. and he could convey an authoritative divine Message. He was like the holy Prophet , faithful to his trust; and therefore there could be no question of the Message being delivered in any other way than exactly according to the divine Will and Purpose. These epithets could apply to the Prophet himself, but in view of verse 23 below, it is best to understand them of Gabriel. After describing the credentials of the Archangel Gabriel, the Text now appeals to the people to consider their own "Companion" . the Prophet, who had been born among them and had lived with them, and was known to be an honourable, truthful, and trustworthy man. If Gabriel was the one who brought the Message to him, then there was no question of demoniacal possession. And the Prophet had seen him in his inspired vision "in the clear horizon’ . Read along with this the whole passage in liii. 1 -18 and notes there; specially n. 5092, where ihe two occasions are mentioned when there was a vision of inspiration: "For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest” ( liii. 18).

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

But no! I do swear by the retreating stars,
That run their course and hide,
By the night as it dissipates,
By the morning as it breathes again,
Surely, this is the word(the Qur’an brought by ) a most honorable Messenger (Gabriel)
Possessor of the mighty power,
Hiving very high rank with the Owner of the Throne (Allah),
Who is obeyed in Heaven and trustworthy,
O people of Makkah! Your companion has not gone mad,
He (Muhammad) indeed saw him (Gabriel) in the clear horizon,

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Oh, but I call to witness) He says: I swear by (the planets) which appear at night and disappear during the day,
(The stars which rise and set) they move at night in the galaxy sweeping away the day and then go back to their positions and disappear; the reference here is to five planets: Venus, Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, and Mercury;
(And the close of night,
And the breath of morning) and when the morning and brightens come; Allah swore by all these
(That this) i.e. the Qur'an (is in truth the word of an honoured messenger) Allah says: it is brought down by Gabriel to a messenger who is honoured by Allah, i.e. Muhammad (pbuh)
Mighty) against his enemies, i.e. Gabriel, (established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne) he has standing and esteem with his Lord,
((One) to be obeyed) i.e. Gabriel is obeyed in Heaven: the angels obey him, (and trustworthy) in conveying the message to the prophets; (And your comrade) your Prophet Muhammad, O Quraysh (is not mad) bewitched as you claim.
(Surely he beheld him) Muhammad saw Gabriel (on the clear horizon) on the high setting of the sun.

Tafseer Jalalain

So I swear (fa-lā: lā is extra) by the receding [planets], the movers, the setters, that is, the five planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus and Mercury (takhnusu means ‘they sink away’ during their orbit, whereas we see stars at the end of their zodiacal course return to the start; taknisu means that they enter their kinās, ‘hideaway’, in other words, they retreat into their settingplaces); and [by] the night as it approaches, as it falls with its darkness, or [it means] as it recedes; and [by] the dawn as it breathes, [as] it extends until it becomes broad daylight, truly this, Qur’ān, is the word of a messenger [who is] noble, in the sight of God, exalted be He — this being [the messenger] Gabriel (it [qawl, ‘word’] has been annexed to him, because he descends with it), powerful, one of mighty powers, eminent, one of eminent status (makīnin is semantically connected ‘Inda, ‘in the presence of’) in the presence of the Lord of the Throne, that is, God, exalted be He;obeyed there, the angels obey him in the heavens, trustworthy, with the Revelation. And your companion, Muhammad (s) (wa-mā sāhibukum: a supplement to [the clause from] innahu, ‘truly this is’, up to the last of the oath clauses) is not a madman, as you claim. For verily he, Muhammad (s), saw him, Gabriel, in the form in which he was created, on the clear horizon, the highest one, towards the east.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Having described the horrors of Resurrection, and the accountability of deeds, Allah swears an oath by a few stars to confirm that the Qur’an is the truth that has been sent down, fully protected from any interruption or distortion, and that the Prophet ﷺ who has received it is a great personality, and the angel (Jibra'il who descended with it was known to him beforehand.
إِنَّهُۥ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ
ذِى قُوَّةٍ عِندَ ذِى ٱلْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ
It [the Qur'an is surely the word of a noble messenger [Jibra'il], the one possessing power and a high status with the Lord of the Throne ... 81:19-20). This is the subject of oath that affirms that Qur'an is the word brought by a noble messenger. Then three qualities are attributed to this noble messenger. The first quality is that he possesses power. The second quality is that he has high status and lofty rank with Allah, and he is obeyed in the upper realm. The third quality is that he is trusted, and there is no possibility of his committing any breach of trust or tampering with the message he conveys. The word 'noble messenger' obviously refers to the angel Jibra'il عليه السلام because the word 'messenger' is used for angels as it is used for prophets, and all the three qualities attributed to the 'messenger' in the next verses are truly present in Jibra'il عليه السلام his being powerful is mentioned in Surah An-Najm in the following words;
عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰ
It is taught to him by one (angel) of strong faculties.[53:5)
It is established through the hadith of Mi'raj that he is obeyed by other angels, because when he accompanied the Holy Prophet to the sky and ordered the angels appointed on its doors to open them he was obeyed by them. That he is trustworthy is too obvious to need a proof. Some commentators, however, take the phrase 'honourable messenger' to refer to the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and accordingly have made an attempt to take all the three qualities referring to the Holy Prophet ﷺ . In the next verses, the Holy Qur'an has mentioned the high status of the Holy Prophet ﷺ , and has refuted the silly objections raised against him by the infidels.
وَمَا صَاحِبُكُم بِمَجْنُونٍ
And your companion [Muhammad ﷺ is not madman .... 81:22) This is rebuttal to the foolish criticism of the enemies who said that Muhammad ﷺ is [God forbid!] insane.
وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْمُبِينِ
And he did see him [Jibra'il عليه السلام on the clear ,, , , horizon. ... 81:23) In other words, Muhammad ﷺ saw Jibra'il عليه السلام on a clear horizon. A similar statement occurs in surah An-Najm as follows:
وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
while he was on the upper horizon. ... 53:7)
The purpose of mentioning this is to show that the Holy Prophet ﷺ was well-acquainted with Jibra'il عليه السلام, the angel of revelation. He had seen him in his original shape. Therefore, there can be no room for doubt in the veracity of revelation he brings to him.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

There are some stars that in the course of their orbit, they start receding back for some time, then restart proceeding onwards, and sometimes they vanish from the scene. Swearing by them is an indication that all their movements are by the will and command of Allah Almighty.
Note:Tafsir of surah Najm verse 7 to be added for the complete understanding of the theme.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah takes several oaths in this Surah to assert the fact that "Undoubtedly this Qur'an is a word brought by an honoured messenger [Jibra'il عليه السلام]." These verses also refute the statement of those disbelievers who claimed that the Holy Prophet ﷺ was insane. Allah says, 'I swear by the planets that recede, that travel and hide." Sayyidina Ali رضي الله عنه has mentioned the planets referred to in these verses are Saturn, Mercury, Jupiter, Mars and Venus. These verses refer to the rising and setting of the planets which appear like stars in the sky and the verses make it clear that they travel in their orbits as well. "And ( I swear by) the night when it departs" Some commentators translate this verse as "By the night when it brings darkness "They says that this interpretation is more appropriate because it refers to the beginning of the night and the next verse [viz. "by the morning when it takes a breath" ] refers to the closing of the night i.e. the arrival of the day. In this way, they maintain, both parts of the night are referred to. Allah swears these oaths to assert that "Undoubtedly this Qur'an is a word brought by an honoured messenger. [Jibra'il عليه السلام, who is powerful and of high rank in the sight of the Owner of the Throne. He is also obeyed there (in the heavens) and trustworthy." The fact that Allah entrusted Jibra'il عليه السلام to convey revelation to the Prophet ﷺ proves that he must certainly be trustworthy. After mentioning Jibra'il عليه السلام, Allah Ta'ala speaks of the Holy Prophet ﷺ . Allah says, "Verily your companion is not insane." The Polytheists of Makkah knew the Holy Prophetﷺ very well and they were convinced that none could be more truthful and honest than he. Therefore, since the veracity of the angelic messenger and that of the human messenger is proven beyond doubt, it would be foolish to doubt the truth of the Qur'an. The author of "Bayanul Qur'an" writes that the oaths Allah takes in these verses are extremely apt. While the travelling and hiding of the planets symbolise the travelling of the angels and their disappearance into the heavens, the departure of the night and arrival of the day symbolise the departure of the darkness of disbelief and arrival of the light of guidance, the cause of this being the Qur'an. "He [The Holy Prophet ﷺ] certainly saw him [Jibra'il عليه السلام] on the clear horizon." Jibra'il عليه السلام normally met the Holy Prophet ﷺ in the appearance of a prophet's companions (Sahabi) by the name of Sayyidina Dihya Kalbi رضي الله عنه . However, The Holy Prophet (ﷺ saw him twice in his original form. The Holy Prophet ﷺ saw him once at the "Sidratul Muntaha" on the night of Mi'raj (Ascension) and again on the horizon when the Holy Prophet ﷺ was in the Ajyad district of Makkah. The Holy Prophet ﷺ saw that he had six hundred wings and that they spanned across thee horizon. [Tirmidhi] .

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "You are not correct that what is being presented in the Qur'an is the bragging of an insane person, or the evil suggestion of a devil."
That for which the oath has been sworn, has been stated in the following verses. The oath means: "Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings) has not seen a vision in darkness, but when the stars had disappeared, the night had departed and the bright morning had appeared, he had seen the Angel of God in the open sky. Therefore, what he tells you is based on his own personal observation and on the experience that he had in full senses in the full light of day."
"A noble messenger": the Angel who brought down Revelation, as becomes explicit from the following verses. "The word of a noble messenger" does not mean that the Qur'an is the word of the Angel himself, but, as the context shows, of Him Who appointed him a messenger. In Al-Haaqqah: 40, likewise, the Qur'an has been called the word of Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings), and there too it does not mean that it is the Holy Prophet's own composition, but describing it as "the word of an honorable messenger", it has been made clear that the Holy Prophet is presenting it in his capacity as the Messenger of God and not as Muhammad bin `Abdullah. At both places, the Word has been attributed to the Angel and to Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace) on the ground that the message of Allah was being delivered to Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace) by the Angel and to the people by Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace). (For further explanation, see E.N. 22 of Al-Haaqqah).
Surah An-Najm: 45, deals with the same theme, thus "It is but a Revelation which is sent down to him. One, mighty in power, has taught him. " As to what is implied by the mighty powers of the Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him) is ambiguous. In any case it at least shows that he is distinguished even among the angels because of his extraordinary powers. In Muslim (kitab- al-iman) Hadrat `A'ishah has reported the Holy Prophet's saying to the effect: "I have twice seen Gabriel in his real shape and form: his glorious being was encompassing the whole space between the earth and the heavens." According to the tradition reported from Hadrat `Abdullah bin Mas`ud in Bukhari. Muslim, Tirmidhi and Musnad Ahmad, the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) had seen Gabriel with his six hundred wings. From this one can have an idea of his mighty powers.
That is, he is the chief of the angels and all angels work under his command.
That is, he is not one who would tamper with Divine Revelation, but is so trustworthy that he conveys intact whatever he receives from God.
"Your Companion": the Holy Messenger of Allah (upon whom be peace). Here, making mention of the Holy Prophet as the companion of the people of Makkah, they have been made to realize that the Holy Prophet was no stranger for them. He was not an outsider but a man of their own clan and tribe; he had lived his whole life among them; even their children knew that he was a very wise man. They should not be so shameless as to call such a man a mad man. (For further explanation, see E.N.'s 2, 3 of An-Najm).
In An-Najm: 7-9, this observation of the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) has been described in greater detail, (For explanation, see E.N.'s 7. 8 of An-Najm).
That is, "The Holy Messenger of Allah does not conceal anything from you. Whatever of the unseen realities are trade known to him by Allah, whether they relate to the essence and attributes of Allah, the angels, life after death and Resurrection, or to the Hereafter, Heaven and Hell, he conveys everything to you without change.

So I swear by the retreating stars -(15)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Such would be the words of a soothsayer, guarded, ambiguous, and misleading. Here everything was clear, sane, true, and under divine inspiration.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

And he (Muhammad) is not to withhold the knowledge of the unseen (i.e. whatever was revealed by Allah)And he (Muhammad) is not to withhold the knowledge of the unseen (i.e. whatever was revealed by Allah)

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And he is not) i.e. Muhammad (pbuh) (avid of the Unseen) he is accused with regard to the revelation; and it is also said this means: he is not avaricious.

Tafseer Jalalain

and he, Muhammad (s), is not to be accused of [knowing] the Unseen, what is hidden of the revelation and the tidings of the heaven (a variant reading [for bi-zanīnin] has bi-danīnin, meaning that he is not ‘niggardly’ [with the Unseen] so as to reduce something of it [and not disclose it]).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

And he (the Prophet ﷺ) is not stingy about (the news of) the unseen

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

The soothsayers pretended to have the knowledge of the Unseen. Still, they
did not tell anything about it without charging a fee. Since the pagans used to
claim that the Holy Prophet was a soothsayer, the verse points out firstly that
unlike the soothsayers, who falsely claim to know the Unseen, the Holy Prophet
really had some knowledge of the Unseen revealed to him through the angel
Jibrail (Gabriel), and secondly he conveys his knowledge to everyone
without withholding anything from it or charging a fee for it like the
soothsayers. This proves that he was not a soothsayer.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah continues to says that the Holy Prophet ﷺ is also not miserly with the knowledge of the unseen" i.e. he conveys all the revelation that he is charged to convey.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "The Holy Messenger of Allah does not conceal anything from you. Those that run [their courses] and disappear -(16)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Such as evil suggestion of envy, spite, greed, selfishness, or other vices. On the contrary the teaching of the Qur-an is beneficent, pointing to the Right Way. the Way of Allah. Rajim: literally, driven away with stones, rejected with complete ignominy. The rite of throwing stones in the valley of Mina at the close of the Makkan Pilgrimage suggests symbolically that the Pilgrim emphatically, definitely, and finally rejects all Evil.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

This (Quran) is not a word of accursed Shaitan

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Nor is this) i.e. the Qur'an (the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned) the utterance of an accursed, rebellious devil whose name is al-Marmi.

Tafseer Jalalain

And it, that is, the Qur’ān, is not the word of an accursed satan, eavesdropping stealthily.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Nor is it the word of an outcast satan (devil).

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Nor is it the word of an outcast Satan (devil)

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

"The Qur'an is not the word of any accursed Satan. So where are you heading?" Once it has been established that the messenger angel has all the right credentials and the messenger Nabi ﷺ is also truthful beyond doubt, how can one wander astray thinking that the Qur'an is doubtful? In addition to this, it has also been proven that the Qur'an is neither the word of a Satan, nor a soothsayer, nor a madman, nor a poet nor a person who has ulterior motives. " It ( the Qur'an) is but a great advice to the universe, for those of you who wish tread the straight path. ( However) You cannot will anything without the will of Allah the Lord of the universe." "Everything is in Allah's control, even guidance.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

You are wrong in thinking that some satan comes and whispers these words into the ear of Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings). It does not suit Satan that he should divert man from polytheism, idol worship, atheism and sin and turn him to God-worship and Tauhid, make man realize that he should live a life of responsibility and accountability to God instead of living an irresponsible, care-free life, should forbid man to adopt practices of ignorance, injustice, immorality and wickedness and lead him to a clean life of justice, piety and high morals." (For further explanation, see Ash-Shua`ra': 210-212 along with E.N.'s 130 to 133, and w. 221-223 along with E.N.'s 140,141).
In other words, although this is an Admonition for all mankind, only such a person can benefit by it, who is himself desirous of adopting piety and righteousness. Man's being a seeker after truth and a lover of right is the foremost condition of his gaining any benefit from it.This theme has already occurred in Al-Muddaththir: 56 and Ad-Dahr: 20 above. For explanation, see E.N. 41 of Al-Muddaththir.

Translation Sahih International

And by the night as it closes in(17)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

It has been shown that this is no word of a mortal, but that it is full of divine wisdom; that its teaching is not that of a madman , but sane to the core and in accordance with human needs; that it freely and clearly directs you to the right Path and forbids you the Path of evil. Why then hesitate? Accept the divine Grace; repent of your sins; and come to the higher Life.It is not meant for one class or race; it is universal, and is addressed to all the Worlds.Allah is the Cherisher of the Worlds, Lord of Grace and Mercy, and His guidance is open to all who have the will to profit by it. But that will must be exercised in conformity with Allah's Will (verse 29). Such conformity is Islam. Verse 28 points to human free-will and responsibility; verse 29 to its limitations. Both extremes, viz.,: cast-iron Determinism and an idea of Chaotic Free-will, are condemned.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Whither then go ye) from Allah's chastisement, commands and prohibitions, O disbelievers? It is also said this means: why do you lie? And it is also said this means: why do you deviate from the Qur'an and refuse to believe in it?
(This is) i.e. the Qur'an (naught else than a reminder) an admonition from Allah (unto creation) the jinn and humankind,
(Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight) to whoever wills to conform to the commands of Allah: the belief in Allah's divine Oneness and other things.
(And ye will not) conform with or believe in Allah's divine Oneness, (unless (it be) that Allah willeth) it for you, (the Lord of Creation) the Lord of all that which has a soul and creeps on the face of the earth, from the inhabitants of the heaven and of the earth'. And of the surah in which the Cleaving is mentioned, which is all Meccan and consists of 19 verses, 80 words and 107 letter.

Tafseer Jalalain

So where are you going? So what path are you going to follow in repudiating the Qur’ān and turning away from it? It is only a reminder, an admonition, for all worlds, [those of] mankind and jinn, for those of you who (li-man shā’a minkum is a substitution for li’l-‘ālamīna, ‘for all worlds’, using the same preposition) wish to go straight, by following the truth;but you will not [wish], to go straight along the [path of] truth, unless God, the Lord of the Worlds, [of all] creatures, wills, that you should go straight along it. Meccan, consisting of 19 verses.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Then where are you going?
It is nothing else but a message of advice for all the worlds
for the benefit of any one from among you who intends to go straight
And you cannot intend (to do anything) unless it is so intended by Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Then where are you going?
It is nothing else but a message of advice for all the worlds,
For the benefit of any one among you who intends to go straight,
And you cannot intend ( to do anything) unless it is so willed by Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.

Note : Related Tafsir is not available .
That is, "You are wrong in thinking that some satan comes and whispers these words into the ear of Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings).
Man's being a seeker after truth and a lover of right is the foremost condition of his gaining any benefit from it.
This theme has already occurred in Al-Muddaththir: 56 and Ad-Dahr: 20 above. For explanation, see E.N. 41 of Al-Muddaththir.
Where to are you then heading?
It is nothing but Good Counsel for everyone in the world,
for everyone of you who wishes to follow the Straight Way;
but your wishing will not avail unless Allah, the Lord of the Universe, so wishes.
