ٱلْقَارِعَةُ.(1)

Ayat 2

مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ.(2)

What is the Striking Calamity?(2) [Al-Qaaria: 2]

What is the Clattering Blow? — [intended] to emphasise its awesomeness (mā’l-qāri‘a: both of these [elements] constitute a subject and a predicate, and [together] the predicate of [the first] al-qāri‘a).

Ayat 3

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ.(3)

And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?(3) [Al-Qaaria: 3]

And what will show you, [what] will make known to you, what the Clattering Blow is? — additional emphasis of its awesomeness (the first mā is a subject, and what follows it is its predicate; the second mā and its predicate also function together as the second direct object of [the verb] adrā, ‘show’).

Ayat 4

يَوْمَ يَكُونُ ٱلنَّاسُ كَٱلْفَرَاشِ ٱلْمَبْثُوثِ.(4)

It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,(4) [Al-Qaaria: 4]

raising, stirring up, therein, in the place of their charge or at that time [of dawn], a trail of dust, by the power of their movement,

Ayat 5

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ ٱلْمَنفُوشِ.(5)

And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.(5) [Al-Qaaria: 5]

and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, like carded wool in terms of the lightness with which it floats [in the air] until it comes to settle upon the earth.

Ayat 6

فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ.(6)

Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],(6) [Al-Qaaria: 6]

Then as for him whose scales weigh heavy, in that his good deeds outweigh his misdeeds,

Ayat 7

فَهُوَ فِى عِيشَةٍۢ رَّاضِيَةٍۢ.(7)

He will be in a pleasant life.(7) [Al-Qaaria: 7]

Ayat 8

وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ.(8)

But as for one whose scales are light,(8) [Al-Qaaria: 8]

Ayat 9

فَأُمُّهُۥ هَاوِيَةٌۭ.(9)

His refuge will be an abyss.(9) [Al-Qaaria: 9]

Ayat 10

وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا هِيَهْ.(10)

And what can make you know what that is?(10) [Al-Qaaria: 10]

نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌۢ.(11)

It is a Fire, intensely hot.(11) [Al-Qaaria: 11]
