Those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists were not to be parted [from misbelief] until there came to them clear evidence -(1)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

(6221) The People of the Book immediately referred to are the Jews and the Christians, who had received scriptures in the same line of prophecy in which came our Prophet. Their scriptures should have prepared them for the advent of the greatest and last of the Prophets. For the Jewish scriptures promised to the Jews, cousins or brethren to the Arabs, a prophet like Moses: "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken" (Deut. 18:15). And Christ promised a Comforter (John, 14:16; 15:26; and 16:7; see my n. 5438 to 61:6) almost by name. The People of the Book fell from the true, straight, and standard religion, into devious ways, and would not come to the true Path until (they said) they were convinced by the arrival of the promised Prophet. But when the promised Prophet came in the person of Muhammad, they rejected him, because they really did not seek for Truth but only followed their own fancies and desires.
(6222) The Polytheists, the Pagans, had not previously believed in any scriptures. But yet, when clear evidence came to them, they should have believed. Yet they rejected the Prophet because they were not really searching for Truth, but were only following their own fancies and desires.
(6223) The Clear Evidence was the Prophet himself, his life, his personality, and his teaching.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Those who are unbelievers from among the people of the Book and from the Mushrikeen were not going to desist from their unbelief until the clear proof came to them,
Period of Revelation

Ibn 'Abbâs and Qatadah are reported to have expressed two views, first that it is Makki Sûrah, second that it is Madani Sûrah. As for its contents, there is nothing in it to indicate whether it was revealed at Makkah or at Madinah.

Major Issues, Divine Laws and Guidance

* The People of the Book (Jews and Christians) did not divide into sects
until after receiving guidance.
* The People of the Book were also commanded to establish Salah (Prayer) and pay Zakah (Obligatory Charity) as it is commanded in the Qur'an.

In this Sûrah, the need of sending a Rasool is explained, then errors of the followers of earlier Books are pointed out. The cause of their straying into different creeds was not that Allah had not provided any guidance to them, but that they strayed after a clear statement of the True religion had come to them. From this, it automatically follows that they themselves were responsible for their error and deviation. If after the coming of the clear statement through Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) they continued to stray, their responsibility would further increase.

The Prophets who came from Allah and the Books sent down by Him, did not enjoin anything but that the way of sincere and true service to Allah be adopted; apart from all other ways, no one else’s worship, service or obedience be mixed with His; the Salah (prayer) be established and the Zakah (obligatory charity) be paid. This has always been a part of the true religion and the followers of the earlier scriptures, straying from this true religion, have added extraneous things to it, which are false, and Allah’s Rasool has come to invite them back to the same original faith.

In conclusion, it is pointed out that the followers of the earlier Books and the idol worshippers who would refuse to acknowledge this Message are the worst of all creatures. Their punishment will be an everlasting hell; and the people who would believe and act righteously, are the best of all creatures. Their reward will be an eternal paradise, wherein they will live forever. Allah will be well pleased with them and they will be well pleased with Allah.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

And from his narration on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that he said regarding the interpretation of Allah's saying (Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture): '(Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture) i.e. the Jews and Christians (and the idolaters) the Arab idolaters (could not have left off (erring)) could not have remained in their denial of Muhammad (pbuh) the Qur'an and Islam (till the clear proof came unto them) until clarification of what is in their Scriptures, the Scriptures of the Jews and Christians, came to them. There is another way of understanding the above: those who disbelieve among the people of the Scripture, before the advent Muhammad (pbuh) such as 'Abdullah Ibn Salam and his followers, and those who ascribed partners to Allah before the advent of Muhammad (pbuh) such as Abu Bakr and his fellow Arabs, would not have desisted from their disbelief and idolatry until the clear proof came to them, i.e. until Muhammad (pbuh) came to them.

Tafseer Jalalain

The disbelievers from among (min: explicative) the People of the Scripture and the idolaters, that is, the idol-worshippers (wa’l-mushrikīna is a supplement to ahl, ‘the People of’) were not going to leave off (munfakkīna is the predicate of yakun, ‘were’), that is to say, they were not going to abandon their ways, until the clear proof, namely, Muhammad (s), should come to them, that is, [until] it came to them;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Verse [l] draws attention to the situation of the world before the advent of the Messenger of Allah: The entire world was sunk deeply in the darkness of ignorance, superstition, corruption, disbelief and paganism. When the whole world was so benighted, the infinite grace, mercy and wisdom of the Lord of the worlds bubbled up to dispel the darkness, to cure the obnoxious diseases and to dissipate the universally prevailing calamities. The moral and spiritual maladies were acute, excruciating, serious and severe. As a result, there was a need for an effective, expert and a competent healer who would be able to cure them. Such a healer was raised in the person of the Final Messenger of Allah who is described as al-Bayyinah 'The Clear Proof. The healer came with a Book. Now follows some of the important characteristics of the Holy Qur'an.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Before the coming of the Holy Prophet there were many polytheists, many Jews and many Christians. When the Holy Prophet came as a guide to them, they adamantly clung to their religions and were not prepared to accept his message without a clear sign of his Prophethood. The Holy Prophet showed them various miracles, the greatest of which was the Qur'an. In addition to this, they were all well aware of his pure character.
Allah Ta'ala says, "The disbelievers from among the People of the Book and the idolaters will not desist (from disbelief) until a clear sign comes to them" i.e. until a witness testifies that they will be successful only if they forsake infidelity and accept Islam. Allah describes this"sign" (witness) as"A messenger from Allah who recites pure scriptures in which the subject matter is accurate." While some commentators state that the 'pure scriptures" refer to the previous scriptures and the accurate 'subject matter" refers to the Qur'an, others are of the opinion that the 'pure scriptures" refer to the Qur'an and the accurate "subject matter" refers to the contents and Surahs of the Qur'an. The accurate 'subject matter" denotes injunctions that are just and that lead to the straight path. Allah refers to this in Surah Zumar where He states, "It is an Arabic Qur'an without any crookedness, so that theyfear." [Surah 39, verse 28]

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

[1] Here the word kufr (unbelief ) has been used in its widest sense, which includes different forms of the unbelieving attitude. For example, some were unbelievers in the sense that they did not acknowledge Allah at all: some did acknowledge Allah but did not regard Him as the One and only God, but worshiped others as well, thinking they were associates in Divine Being or Divine attributes and powers in one way or the other; some acknowledged oneness of God but committed some kind of shirk as well; some acknowledged God but did not acknowledge His Prophets and the guidance brought by them; some acknowledged one particular Prophet and did not acknowledge another; 'others rejected the Hereafter. In short, there were different kinds of kufr in which the people were involved. And the statement: "the disbelievers from among the people of the Book and the mushriks . . . ",does not mean that some of them were not involved in kufr, but that those who were involved in kufr were of two kinds: the followers of the Book and the mushriks. Here, min has not been used for division but for explanation, as, . for example, in Surah Al-Hajj: 30, where it has been said Fajtanib-ur rijsa min al-authan. which means: "therefore, guard yourselves against the filth of idols'-, and not: "guard yourselves against the filth which is in the idols." Likewise, alladhina kafaru min ahl-il-Kitabi wal-mushrikin means: "the, disbelievers from among the followers of the .Book and the mushriks ... ", and not: "those who have disbelieved from these two groups.
[2] Despite the common factor of kufr between them the two groups have been mentioned by separate names. The followers of the Book imply the people who possessed any of the revealed Books, even if in corrupted form, sent to the former Prophets, and they believed in it. And the mushriks (idolaters) imply the people who did not follow any Prophet nor believed in any Book. Although in the Qur'an the shirk, (polytheism, idolatry) of the people of the Book has been mentioned at many places, e.g. about the Christians it has been said: "They say: God is one of the three" (Al-Ma'idah: 73); "The Messiah is son of God" (At Taubah: 30); "The Messiah; son of Mary; is God" (Al-Ma'idah: 17); and about the Jews it has been said: "They say: Ezra is son of God" (At-Taubah: 30), yet nowhere in the Qur'an has the term "mushrik"been used for them, but they have been mentioned as "alladhina ul-ul-Kitaba" (those who were given the Book), or by the words Jews and Christians. For they believed in the principle of Tauhid (Oneness of God) as the we religion, and then committed shirk. Contrary to this, for others than the followers of the Book, the word mushrik has been used as a. term, for they acknowledged shirk (idolatry) as true religion and disacknowledged Tauhid. This distinction between the two groups holds good not only in the use of the term but also in the Shari`ah injunctions. Animal flesh duly slaughtered by the followers of the Book has been declared lawful for the Muslims if they slaughter a lawful animal in the name of Allah in the prescribed way, and permission to marry their women also has been given. On the contrary, neither the animal slaughtered by the mushriks is lawful for the Muslims nor is marriage with their women.
[3] That is, "There was no means of their being freed from this state of unbelief except that a clear evidence (of the truth) should come and make them understand the falsity of every form of kufr and its being untrue, and should present the right way before them in a clear and rational way." This does not mean that after the coming of the clear evidence they would give up kufr but that in the absence of the clear evidence it was not at all possible that they would be delivered from that state. However, if even after its coming some of them still persisted in their kufr, then they themselves would be responsible for it; they could not complain that Allah had made no arrangement for their guidance. This same thing bas been expressed in the Qur'an at different places in different ways, e.g. in Surah An-Nahl: 9, it is said: "Allah has taken upon Himself to show the Right Way"; in Surah Al-Laila 12, it is said: "It is for Us to show the Way"; in Surah An-Nisa: 163-165: "O! Prophet, We have sent Revelation to you just as We had sent it to Noah and other Prophets after him ... All these Messengers were sent as bearers of good news and warners so that, after their coming, the people should have no excuse left to plead before Allah"; and in Surah Al-Ma'idah: 19: "O people of the Book, this Messenger of Ours has come to you and is making clear to you the teachings of the Right Way after a long interval during which there had come no Messengers, lest you should say: `No bearer of good news nor warner came to us. Lo, now the bearer of good news and warner has come."

A Messenger from Allah, reciting purified scriptures(2)

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

that is, a Rasool of Allah reciting to them holy scriptures from purified pages,

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(A messenger from Allah) i.e. Muhammad (pbuh) (reading) to them (purified pages) pages purified from idolatry

Tafseer Jalalain

a messenger from God (rasūlun mina’Llāhi substitutes for al-bayyinatu, ‘the clear proof’), namely, the Prophet (s), reciting pages purified, of [all] falsehood,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Verses [2-3] (a messenger from Allah who recites the purified scrolls containing [right and] straight writings. - 98:2,3) The verb yatlu is derived from the infinitive tilawah, meaning 'to read out or to recite'. However, not every reading or reciting is tilawah, but only the one that is very closely followed according to the teacher's instruction. Probably, this is the reason why the word tilawah is specifically used, in common idiom, for 'the recitation of the noble Qur'an. The word suhu f is the plural of sahifah and it refers to 'a leaf or a page of a book or some leaves of paper on which something is written'. The word kutub is the plural of kitab and it may mean: [l] a leaf or page of a book or some leaves of paper on which something is written. From this point of view, the words kutub and suhuf are synonyms; or [2] now and then the word kitab [pl. kutub] is used in the sense of a 'writ ' as in [8:68] "Had there not been a writ from Allah which came earlier ..." the word kitab is used in the sense of a 'writ'. In this context, the second sense seems to fit in more appropriately because if it is taken in the first sense, the words kutub and suhuf, being synonyms, the prepositional phrase fiha is rendered meaningless. The pronoun -ha in the phrase refers to suhuf , and the two statements would mean: 'reciting purified written pages in which are true written pages'. This is not in keeping with the lofty rules and principles of Qur'anic eloquence.
The word mutahharatan [purified] is an adjective qualifying the noun suhuf [pages/scrolls]. According to Ibn 'Abbas, the Scriptures are completely free from all possible flaws, forgeries, doubt, hypocrisy and deviations. The word qayyimah is used in the sense of 'straight', and is the adjective of the noun kutub, and it means its laws, ordinances and injunctions are upright, straight, just and balanced. It could also mean 'lasting and permanent'. In this instance, the phrase would signify that the Divine injunctions of the Holy Qur'an will last permanently till the Day of Judgement. The verse thus purports to say that the sending of the Holy Prophet Muhammad [as the Clear Proof] was essential to the transformation of the people of earlier revelations and the pagans who had ended up in disbelief and could not have departed from their erring ways without the help of his Prophetic mission. His mission was to recite the pure scrolls to them which contained clear Divine injunctions. Initially he did not recite from the Scriptures but from his memory, but the sense here is that he recited to them a discourse that was later written and preserved in scrolls. The Qur'an [as the Clear Proof] is the compendium of all that is good, lasting and immutable teachings.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Although many people accepted the message of the Holy Prophet, there were many who refused to accept Islam despite witnessing many signs. A great many of those who refused to accept were the People of the Book (the Jews and the Christians). Although these people were expecting the Holy Prophet and claimed that they would follow him when he arrived, they eventually divided when the Holy Prophet came to them; while some believed in him, others did not. Allah refers to this when He says, "Those who were given the scripture divided only after the clear sign [The Holy Prophet] had come to them."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

[4] Here, the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) himself has been called "the clear evidence", for his life before and after Prophethood, his presenting a Book like the Qur'an in spite of being .un-lettered, his bringing about an extraordinary revolution in the lives of the converts to Islam through education and training, his educating the people in rational beliefs, clean and pure forms of worship, excellent morals and the best principles and ,injunctions for human life, perfect harmony and agreement between his word and deed, and his constancy of purpose in respect of his message in spite of every kind of resistance and opposition, all these were clear signs of the truth that he was Allah's Messenger.
[5] Lexically, suhuf means "written pages", but in the Holy Qur'an this word has been used as a term for the Books revealed to the Prophets of Allah (peace be upon them); and by the holy scriptures are meant the scriptures which are free from every mixture of falsehood, every kind of error and moral filth. The full import of these words becomes evident when one studies the Bible (and the books of other religions as well) vis-a-vis the Holy Qur'an, and finds written in them along with sound teachings such things as are not only opposed to truth and reason but are also morally contemptible. After reading them when one turns to the Qur'an, one realizes how pure and hallowed this Book is.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

containing (right and) straight writings.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah refers to this in Surah Zumar where He states, "It is an Arabic Qur'an without any crookedness, so that they fear." [Surah 39, verse 28]

Translation Sahih International

Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence.(4)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

(6227) The responsibility of the People of the Book is greater than that of Pagans, because the People of the Book had been prepared for the standard and straight Religion by the revelations which they had already received. Yet, when the clear evidence came in Islam, they resisted it. And what is this standard and straight Religion, free of all ambiguity, and free of all casual rights and ceremonies? They are summed up in three eternal principles, as explained in the next verse and the next note.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Those who were given the Book before this (Qur’an) did not divide into sects until after there came to them a clear proof.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Nor were the People of the Scripture divided) those who were given the Torah, i.e. Ka'b Ibn al-Ashraf and his host, did not differ about Muhammad (pbuh) the Qur'an and Islam (until after the clear proof came unto them) until the clarification of what is in their Scripture regarding the traits and description of Muhammad (pbuh) came to them.

Tafseer Jalalain

And those who were given the Scripture did not become divided, regarding belief in him [the Prophet] (s), except after the clear proof had come to them, namely, the Prophet (s) — or the Qur’ān which he brought as his miracle. Before his (s) arrival they had all agreed to believe in him when he would come; then those who disbelieved in him from among them became envious of him.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Verse [4] (And those who were given the book did not disagree but after the Clear Proof came to them.) The verb tafarraqa here means 'to deny, reject or differ and disagree'. The verse means to say that the People of the Book had eagerly awaited the advent of a great Holy Prophet about whom clear prophecies were found in their Scriptures, clear description of the Holy Prophet was given, in that the Qur'an would descend upon him and it would be compulsory for them to obey and follow him, but when he appeared in fact, then instead of accepting him, they rejected him. The Qur'an points out that there was a complete agreement among the Jews and the Christians that the Final Messenger will make his appearance, as in [2:89] “... while earlier, they used to seek help against those who disbelieved ..." That is, the Torah had in several places foretold the coming of the Holy Prophet. In fact, the Jews themselves used to tell the pagan Arabs that a new Prophet was soon to come who will vanquish them, and the Jews claimed that they would be with him, so they would be victorious. Further in [2:89] the Qur'an states ,"...yet when there came to them that they did identify, they denied it.. . ". The phrase 'that they did identify' could refer to the 'Final Messenger' or the 'new Divine Book [the Quran]' or the 'religion of Truth'. The same theme runs through the verse under comment: Many people accepted the new Prophet, the new Book and the new religion in terms of the prophecies made in their revealed Scriptures, but a large number, especially the Christians, rejected them. It is a strange phenomenon that before his advent they believed in him without a single dissenting voice, but when he appeared as the Clear Proof, dissention arose and a large number rejected him while a small number believed in him.
Since this phenomenon was restricted to the People of the Book, it did not include the pagans, unlike verse [1] which includes the pagans also. Allah knows best!

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

The Jews and the Christians knew that a messenger was supposed to come in the last days, as mentioned in 2:89, but when the Holy Prophet came with clear proofs, they rejected him only because he was not from the Israelites. Their attitude was thus more reproachable than the pagans who did not believe in any prophet. That is why they are condemned in this verse as separate from the open polytheists.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Although many people accepted the message of the Holy Prophet, there were many who refused to accept Islam despite witnessing many signs. A great many of those who refused to accept were the People of the Book (the Jews and the Christians). Although these people were expecting the Holy Prophet and claimed that they would follow him when he arrived, they eventually divided when the Holy Prophet came to them; while some believed in him, others did not. Allah refers to this when He says, "Those who were given the scripture divided only after the clear sign [The Holy Prophet] had come to them."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, the reason why the people of the Book before this were divided into countless sects because of different kinds of errors and deviation, was not that Allah had failed to send "a clear evidence" from Himself for their guidance, but the fact that they adopted the wrong way after guidance had come from Allah; therefore, they themselves were responsible for their deviation, for Allah had fulfilled His obligation towards them. Likewise, since their scriptures are no longer pure and their books no longer consist of original and correct teachings, Allah by sending a Messenger of His, as a clear evidence, with a hallowed Book, containing sound and pure teachings, has again fulfilled His obligation towards them, so that if even after that they remained divided, they themselves should be responsible for it and should have no excuse left to plead before Allah. This thing has been stated at many places in the Qur'an, e.g. see Al Baqarah: 213, 253; AI-`Imran: 19: Al-Ma'idah: 44-50; Yunus: 93; Ash-Shura: 13-I5; Al-Jathiyah: 16-18, along with the corresponding notes for fuller understanding.

And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.(5)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

(6228) The three eternal principles of Religion arc: (1) sincere devotion to Allah; (2) Prayer and Praise as drawing man nearer to Allah: and (3) the service of Allah's creatures by deeds of practical charity.
(6229) Hanif: see n. 134 to ii. 135.
(6230) See n. 6226 above.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Yet, they were commanded nothing but to worship Allah, with their sincere devotion to Him, being True in their faith; to establish Salah ( prayers); and to pay Zakah (obligatory charity); and that is the infallible true Religion.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

: (And they are ordered) in all the Scriptures (naught else than to serve Allah) nothing else but to profess Allah's divine Oneness, (keeping religion pure for Him) through the profession of Allah's divine Oneness, (as men by nature upright) as ones surrendered unto Him, (and to establish worship) and perform the five daily prayers after declaring their profession in Allah's divine Oneness (and to pay the poor-due) from their wealth after that. Allah then mentioned belief in Allah's divine Oneness, saying: (That) i.e. belief in Allah's divine Oneness (is true religion) the religion of truth, straight without any crookedness; it is also said that this means: that, i.e. belief in Allah's divine Oneness, is the religion of the angels; and it is also said this means: it is the religion of those who are by nature upright; and it is also said this means: the religion of Abraham.

Tafseer Jalalain

And they were only commanded, in their Scripture, the Torah and the Gospel, to worship God (illā li-ya‘budū means illā an ya‘budū, an having been omitted and the lām added) devoting religion purely to Him, [free] of any idolatry, as hanīfs, upright in [following] the religion of Abraham and the religion of Muhammad (s), when he would come — so how is it that they disbelieved in him?, and to establish prayer and pay the alms. That is the upright religion, the upright creed.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Verse [5] (And that is the way of the straight religion.) The word qayyimah [the straight] is apparently the qualifier of the noun kutub [Books] which occurred earlier. Some treat the adjective as qualifying the noun millah [religion]. The verse purports to say that Allah commanded the People of the former Scriptures that they should render full and sincere obedience to Divine commandments, that is, to worship Allah alone. They should also establish the regular prayers and pay the obligatory alms. Then the Qur'an reminds them that this is not their distinctive feature exclusively. All former religions that are upright and received Books from Allah have the same features. This is the true religion of all the Prophets that they preached to their respective people. It would appear that the phrase kutubun qayyimah [(right and) straight writings], contextually, refers to the Qur'anic ordinances and injunctions. From this point of view, the verse would signify that the ordinances and injunctions of the Shariah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad are exactly the same as those that were given to them in their revealed Scriptures. They were not divergent so that they could find a pretext to oppose.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

while they were not ordered but to worship Allah, making their submission exclusive for him with no deviation, and to establish Salah and pay Zakah . That is the way of the straight religion.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah Ta'ala then mentions the commands that the people of the former religions received, much the same as Muslims are commanded. Allah says,"They had been ordered only to worship Allah, devoting their religion solely to Him and turning away from other religions. (They were also commanded to) perform Salah and to pay Zakat. This is the true religion" i.e. this is the religion of all the Prophets Although the Jews and the Christians were aware of the truth of Islam, they were rebellious and refused to submit.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

: That is, the message of the same religion, which now the Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings) is preaching, had been given to the people of the Book by the Prophets who came to them and by the Books which were sent among them; they had not ban enjoined any of the false belief and wicked deeds which they adopted afterwards and created different sects. Right and correct religion has always been the same: that Allah alone should be served and worshiped exclusively, none else be joined with Him in worship, man should become worshiper of One Allah alone and obedient to His Command only, should establish the salat and pay the zakat. (For further explanation, see E. N. 19 of Al A`raf; E.N.'s: 108,109 of Yunus, E.N.'s 43 to 47 of Ar-Rum; E.N.'s 3, 4 of Az-Zumar) .Some commentators have taken the words din al-qayyimah in this verse in the meaning of din al-millat al-qayyimah: "Religion of the righteous community". Some others have taken qayyimah 'in the superlative sense and understood it in the same meaning as we have adopted in our translation.

Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.(6)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

To be given the faculty of discrimination between right and wrong, and men to reject truth and right, is the worst folly which a creature endowed with will can commit. It must necessarily bring its own punishment, whether the creature calls himself one of the children of Abraham or one of the redeemed of Christ, or whether he goes by the mere light of nature and reason as a Pagan. Honour in the sight of Allah is not due to race or color, but to sincere and righteous conduct (49:13).

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Surely, those who disbelieve from among the people of the Book and the Mushrikeen shall be in the fire of hell, to dwell therein forever. They are the worst of all creatures.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Lo! those who disbelieve) in Muhammad (pbuh) and the Qur'an, (among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters) i.e. the idolaters among the people of Mecca, (will abide in fire of hell) never to die therein or leave it. (They are the worst of created beings.

Tafseer Jalalain

Truly the disbelievers from among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters shall be in the fire of Hell, to abide therein (khālidīna: an implied circumstantial qualifier, in other words, it will be decreed for them by God, exalted be He, to abide therein) — those are the worst of creatures.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Surely those who disbelieved from among the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the fire of Jahannam, in which they will be living forever. Those are the worst of all human beings.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Surely those who disbelieved from among the People of the Book and the polytheists will be in the fire of Jahannam, in which they will be living forever. Those are the worst of all human beings.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

In the above verses, Allah Ta'ala outlines the ultimate abode of each of the two groups of people. Concerning the disbelievers, Allah says, "Verily the disbelievers from the People of the Book and the idolaters shall abide forever in the fire of Hell. These are the worst of creation." Besides the Jews, the Christians and the Polytheists, also included in the ambit of "disbelievers"are the atheists and those who do not follow any religion. The abode of all such people is Hell. Also included among the disbelievers are those people who do not believe in any Nabi (prophet) of Allah or who do not believe in the Holy Prophet as Allah's final messenger. Because Islam is the only religion that Allah accepts from a person, everyone who does not accept Islam is regarded as a disbeliever. Therefore, Allah says in Surah Nisa, "O Mankind! Indeed the messenger has come to you with the truth from your Lord; so believe, it will be better for you. If you disbelieve, then verily to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth. Allah is ever All Knowing, TheWise." [Surah 4,verse 170]

Allah Ta'ala says in verse 19 of Surah Al Imran (Surah 3),"Definitely the only religion with Allah is Islam." In verse 85 of the same Surah, Allah says, "Whosoever seeks a religion besides Islam, it shall never be accepted from him, and he will be,in the Hereafter, among the losers." Thereafter, in the same Surah Al Imran [Surah 3,verse 91], Allah Ta'ala says, "Verily those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers, the earth full of gold shall never be accepted from any of them if they ever wish to offer it as ransom. Theirs shall be a painful punishment and they shall have no helpers.

It should be understood well that every person who rejects Islam is a Kafir (a disbeliever). The Munafiq (hypocrites) are also disbelievers because their hearts reject Islam. If any disbeliever dies as a disbeliever (without accepting Islam), he will suffer eternally in Hell.Such people are referred to as "the worst of creation" because in this world they have rejected their Creator and Sustainer Allah Ta'ala and His Religion, and they will have to suffer the worst punishment in the Hereafter. Therefore, together with having the worst beliefs and deeds, their plight in the Hereafter will also be the worst.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

[8] "Disbelieved": refused to acknowledge the Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace) as Allah's Messenger. The meaning is that the end of those from among the mushriks and the followers of the Book, who have not acknowledged the Messenger whose emergence by itself is a clear evidence, and who is reciting to them hallowed pages containing sound and correct teachings, will be as is being described below.
[9] That is, they are worse than all creatures of God, even than animals, for the animals do not possess reason and power, but these people reject the Truth in spite of having reason and authority.

Translation Sahih International

Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures.(7)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

(6232) Contrast this with the preceding verse. Human beings who live a life of faith and good justify the purpose of their probation here. They attain the fulfillment of their highest hopes

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Surely, those who believe and do good deeds, are the best of all creatures

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And) lo! those who believe) in Muhammad (pbuh) and the Qur'an, such as 'Abdullah Ibn Salam and his followers and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and his companions (and do good works) acts of obedience privately between themselves and their Lord (are the best of created beings.

Tafseer Jalalain

Truly those who believe and perform righteous deeds — they are the best of creatures (al-bariyya means alkhalīqa).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, they are the best of all human beings.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, they are the best of all human beings.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah Ta'ala then discusses the condition of the believers in the Akhirah (Hereafter). Allah says, "indeed those who believe and who carry out good deeds are certainly the best of creation. Their reward with their Lord is eternal gardens where they shall abide forever and ever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him."Allah will grant these people so much in the Akhirah (Hereafter) that there will be nothing more for them to desire. Sayyidina Abu Sa'id Khudri reports that the Holy Prophet said, "Without doubt, Allah shall call to the people of Heaven saying, 'O dwellers of Jannah (Heaven)!' They will reply, 'O our Lord,we are present and ready to carry out Your orders. All good is in Your control" Allah shall ask them, "Are you happy?' 'How can we not be, 'they will submit, 'when You have bestowed on us what You have not given to any of Your creation?" Allah will tell them, "Should I not grant you something superior to all of this?' They will exclaim,'What can be superior to this?' Allah will say, I shall confer My pleasure on you and I will never be angry with you in the future." [Bukhari v.2 p.969] Allah Ta'ala concludes the Surah by saying, "This is for him who fears his Lord." This verse makes it clear that Heaven and its bounties are reserved for those who fear Allah and accept Him as their Lord and Cherisher. They are aware of the fact that the Day of Judgment is imminent when Allah Ta'ala will pass judgement on people and send them to either Heaven or Hell.Such people realise that they have to adhere to the tenets of Belief and that they have to carry out good deeds to attain salvation in the Akhirah (Hereafter).

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, they are superior to all creatures of God, even to the angels, for the angels do not have the power to disobey, and these people adopt Allah's obedience in spite of having the power to disobey Him.

Translation Sahih International

Their reward with Allah will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.(8)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

(6233) The Good Pleasure of Allah is the final Bliss of Salvation. The good pleasure is mutual; the truly saved is he whose will has become completely identified with Allah's Universal Will. (R).
(6234) The fear of Allah is the fear to offend against His Holy Law, the fear to do anything which is against His Holy Will. Such fear is akin to love; for with it dawns the consciousness of Allah's loving care for all His creatures.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Their reward with their Rabb shall be the gardens of eternity, beneath which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. Allah shall be well pleased with them and they shall be well pleased with Him. That is for him who fears his Rabb.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Their reward is with their Lord: Gardens of Eden) the chamber of the Beneficent, the source of the prophets and those near to Him (beneath which) beneath whose trees, habitations and rooms (rivers flow) rivers of wine, water, honey and milk, (wherein they dwell forever) they remain in Paradise for ever never to die or leave it. (Allah hath pleasure in them) i.e. in their faith and works (and they have pleasure in Him) in His reward and bestowal of honour upon Him. (This) i.e. the Gardens and good pleasure (is (in store) for him who feareth his Lord) is for him who believes in Allah's divine Oneness such as Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and his companions and 'Abdullah Ibn Salam and his followers'.

Tafseer Jalalain

Their reward with their Lord will be Gardens of Eden, as a residence, underneath which rivers flow, wherein they shall abide forever. God is pleased with them, because of [their] obedience of Him, and they are pleased with Him, because of His reward. That is [the reward] for him who fears his Lord, [for him] who fears His punishment and hence desists from disobeying Him, exalted be He.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Verse [8] (Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him; that is for him who fears his Lord.) This verse points to the highest stage of spiritual development of the inmates of Paradise, that is, the Divine pleasure with no danger of Divine displeasure. This is the greatest reward with which the people of faith will be blessed. The God-fearing people are well-pleased with Him because of the comprehensive favours He has given them. Sayyidna Abu Sa'id Al Khudri narrates that the Messenger of Allah said: "Undoubtedly, Allah shall address the inmates of Paradise: ‘O Inmates of Paradise!' "
They will reply: ‘Our Lord, we are present and ready to carry out Your orders. All good is in Your control.'
Allah shall ask them: ‘Are you happy?'
They will submit: 'How can we not be happy when You have given us what You have not bestowed on any of Your creation? '
Allah will tell them: 'Shall I not grant you something superior to all of this?'
They will exclaim: 'What can be superior to this?'
Allah will reply: 'I shall grant you My pleasure, and I will never be angry with you in the future."'. [Transmitted by al-Bukhari vide Mazhari].

It should be noted here that there are two types of rida' [pleasure]:
one in general sense; and second in specific or higher sense. In the general sense, rida' bil-qadr (i.e. to be pleased with every decree of Allah) is part of the obligations of a servant of Allah. A consummated slave is only ever satisfied and content with Allah Himself, and thus sincerely accepts the Divine decree. However, here the word is used in the higher sense, that is, Allah bestows upon a slave all his specific wishes and ambitions without leaving out any of them as in [93:5] (And of course, your Lord will give you so much that you will be pleased.) Here also the word 'rida means the fulfillment of every wish of the Holy Prophet. When this verse was revealed, the Messenger of Allah expressed his wish and ambition that he would not be pleased until every single believer is taken out of Hell. [Mazhari]
Verse [8 - the concluding phrase] (...That is for him who has awe of his Lord.) The word 'fear' or 'awe' here is not used in the sense of an 'agitated, disturbed or perturbed feeling' which we naturally have for an enemy, a beast, a ferocious animal or an obnoxious thing that might harm us. 'Khashyatullah' (Allah's awe) is, on the contrary, a feeling of deep, reverential awe that leads man to Allah's obedience. It is the awe of Allah's Majesty and His Incomparability that makes the perfect slave do every work under every circumstance to attain the Divine pleasure and evade every occasion of His displeasure. This is the axis on which rotates the religious perfection and all bounties of the Hereafter.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Their reward, with their Lord, is gardens of eternity beneath which rivers flow, in which they will be abiding forever.Allah is well pleased with them, and they are well pleased with Him. That (reward) is for him who has awe of his Lord.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Sayyidina Abu Sa'id Khudri reports that the Holy Prophet said,"Without doubt, Allah shall call to the people of Heaven saying, 'O dwellers of Jannah (Heaven)!' They will reply, 'O our Lord,we are present and ready to carry out Your orders. All good is in Your control" Allah shall ask them, "Are you happy?' 'How can we not be,'they will submit,'when You have bestowed on us what You have not given to any of Your creation?" Allah will tell them, "Should I not grant you something superior to all of this?' They will exclaim,'What can be superior to this?' Allah will say,I shall confer My pleasure on you and I will never be angry with you in the future." [Bukhari v.2 p.969] Allah Ta'ala concludes the Surah by saying, "This is for him who fears his Lord." This verse makes it clear that Heaven and its bounties are reserved for those who fear Allah and accept Him as their Lord and Cherisher.

In other words, the person who did not live in the world fearless and independent of God, but feared Him at every step lest he should do something which might entail His wrath and punishment, will have this reward resolved for him with Allah.
