INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY: SURAT Al Infitar, 82.

(5997) In subject-matter this Surah is Cognate to the last, though the best authorities consider it a good deal later in chronology in the early Makkan Period.

It's argument is subject to the threefold interpretation mentioned in n.5982 to 81.13, viz., as referring (1) to the final Day of Judgement, (2) to the Lesser Judgement, on an individual's death, and (3) to the awakening of the inner Light in the soul at any time, that being considered as Death to the Falsities of this life and a Re-birth to the true spiritual Reality.

There are four conditional clauses here, and the substantive clause is in verse 5. In S. 81. there were 12 conditional clauses, and the conclusion was similar, but not expressed in precisely the same terms. See 72:5, n. 6002 below. The physical world as we see it now will be destroyed before the final Day of Judgement, establishing the true spiritual Reality. In the following four clauses we have a reference to the Lesser Judgement, the individual dawn of the true Reality at Death.

(5998) The beautiful blue sky overhead, which we take for granted in sunshine and storm, will be shattered to pieces before the New World is established. The partition which seems at present to divide things divine from the phenomenal world has to be shattered before each soul knows the reality about itself. (R).

When the heaven is cleft asunder;

This Sûrah and the Sûrah At-Takweer closely resemble each other in their subject matter and were sent down in the same period, which is the early stage of the Prophet's residence at Makkah.

Major Issues, Divine Laws and Guidance

* A description as to what will happen on the Day of Judgement.
* Guardian angels are assigned to each individual. They are recording
each and every action.
* Allah Himself will be the Judge on the Day of Judgement.

The theme of this Sûrah is the Hereafter. After describing the Day of Resurrection, it is pointed out that every person will see whatever he has done in this world. Then man is asked to ponder upon the question as to what has deluded him into thinking that Allah ( God), Who brought him into being and by Whose favor and bounty, he possesses the finest body, limbs and features among all creatures, is only bountiful and not just? His being bountiful and generous does not mean that man should become fearless of His justice. Man is warned that he should not have any misunderstanding about his accountability on the Day of Judgment because his complete record is being prepared. Two angels have been assigned to each person. They are the trustworthy writers. They are writing down whatever he is doing.

In conclusion, it is stated that the Day of Resurrection will surely take place and on that Day the righteous shall enjoy every kind of bliss in paradise and the wicked shall be punished in hell. On that Day, no one shall avail anyone anything. All powers of reward and punishment shall be with Allah.

And from his narration on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that he said regarding the interpretation of Allah's saying (When the heaven is cleft asunder): '(When the heaven is cleft asunder) by the descent of the Lord-a descent without modality-and the angels and whatever He wills of His command,

When the heaven is split open, [when it is] rent asunder,

(...then one will know what he sent ahead and what he left behind .... 825) In the preceding verses [1-4] of the Surah, Allah depicts the scene of the Day of Judgement that when the sky splits, the stars fall, the seas are poured forth [i.e the fresh and salt

water bodies will merge to form one mass of water] and the graves are overturned [i.e corpses will emerge from their graves], every soul shall come to know what it had sent ahead and what it had left behind. The phrase 'what he sent ahead' means the good or evil act which he has done in his life; and the phrase 'what he left behind' means what he failed to do or refrained from doing. It is also possible that 'what he sent ahead' refers to the acts he has done himself, and 'what he left behind' refers to the acts one has not done himself, but he has laid down a custom in the society. The Holy Prophet is reported to have said: "If anyone establishes a good tradition in Islam, he will have a reward for it and the equivalent of the rewards of those who act upon it after him, without theirs being diminished in any respect; but he who establishes a bad custom in Islam will bear the responsibility of it and the responsibility of those who act upon it after him, without theirs being diminished in any respect." This subject was dealt with earlier under the following verse:'Man will be informed of what he sent ahead and what he left behind. [53:13]'

When the sky will be cleft asunder,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

These verses also depict the scene of Judgment Day. Allah Ta'ala says,
"When the sky splits, the stars fall, the oceans are poured forth (i.e. fresh and salt water bodies will merge to become one mass of water) and graves tipped over (i.e. corpses will emerge from their graves), every soul shall come to know what it had sent ahead and left behind" While the first three occurrences will take place after the first blowing of the trumpet, the fourth will take place after the second blowing.
The author of "Ruhul Ma'ani" states that when all waters become one, they will seep into the earth and no water will be left on the surface of the earth.

5999 Cf. 81:2, where the word for "stars"
(Nujum) is different, and the verb is different. Najm has reference to brightness, and the verb "losing their lustre" was appropriate there, to show the opposite. Kawkab (used here) has more the meaning of a star as fixed in a constellation; and the opposite of a fixed and definite order is "scattered", the verb used here. In fact, throughout this passage, the dominating idea is the disturbance of order and symmetry. The metaphor behind the scattering of the constellations is that in the present order of things we see many things associated together,
e.g., rank with honour, wealth with comfort, etc. In the New World this will be seen to have been merely fortuitous. (R)

and when the stars are dispersed, [when] they expire and begin to fall,

(...then one will know what he sent ahead and what he left behind .... 825) In the preceding verses [1-4] of the Surah, Allah depicts the scene of the Day of Judgement that when the sky splits, the stars fall, the seas are poured forth [i.e the fresh and salt water bodies will merge to form one mass of water] and the graves are overturned [i.e corpses will emerge from their graves], every soul shall come to know what it had sent ahead and what it had left behind. and when the stars will disperse,

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

In Surah At-Takwir it has been said: "When the oceans are set ablaze," and here: "When the oceans are torn apart." When the two verses are read together, and this fact also is kept in view that even according to the Qur'an a terrible earthquake will occur on the Resurrection Day, which will shake up the entire earth all at once, the state of the splitting of the oceans and their being set ablaze ' seems to be as follows: first, because of the terrible convulsion, the bottom of the oceans will split asunder and their water will start sinking into the interior of the earth where an intensely hot lava is constantly boiling up. Coming into contact with the lava, water will dissolve into its two constituent parts, oxygen which helps combustion, and hydrogen, which is itself combustible. Thus, in the process pf dissolution and combustion, a chain reaction will start, which will set all the oceans 'of the world ablaze. This is our conjecture, the correct knowledge is only with Allah.

(6000) "when the oceans boil over with a swell". Here, "are suffered to burst forth" expresses the end of the present order of things. This may be in two ways: (1) The barrier, which keeps within their respective bounds the various streams of salt and freshwater (55:20, n. 5185), will be removed; (2) the Ocean will overwhelm the whole Globe.

(6001) This item is not mentioned in 81:1-14. Here it is introduced to show that the whole order of things will be so reversed that even Death will not be Death. We think there is tranquillity in Death, but there will be no tranquillity. Literally, and figuratively, Death will be the beginning of a new Life. What we think to be Death will bring forth Life.

(And the sepulchres are overturned) the dead in them are taken out,

and when the tombs are overturned, [when] their earth [above them] is dug up and its dead are raised (the response to idhā, ‘when’, and all that is supplemented thereto is [the following]):

Ayat 5

عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌۭ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ.(5)

A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back.(5)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Sent forward and kept back: may mean: the deeds of commission and omission in this life. Or the Arabic words may also be translated: sent forward and left behind: i.e., the spiritual possibilities which it scnt forward for its other life, and the physical things on which it prided itself in this life, but which it had to leave behind in this life. Or else, the things it put first and the things it put last in importance may change places in the new world of Reality. “The first shall be last and the last shall be first”

: then each soul shall know what it has sent forth and what it has left behind.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

: (A soul) every soul at that point (will know what it hath sent before (it)) of good or evil (and what left behind) of good or evil wont; it is also said this means: it will know the acts of obedience it offered and those it missed.

Tafseer Jalalain

a soul, every soul, will know, at the time of the [occurrence of the] things mentioned, which is the Day of Resurrection, what it has sent ahead, in the way of deeds, and, what [it has], left behind, of these and did not do.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(...then one will know what he sent ahead and what he left behind .... 825) In the preceding verses [1-4] of the Surah, Allah depicts the scene of the Day of Judgement that when the sky splits, the stars fall, the seas are poured forth [i.e the fresh and salt water bodies will merge to form one mass of water] and the graves are overturned [i.e corpses will emerge from their graves], every soul shall come to know what it had sent ahead and what it had left behind. The phrase 'what he sent ahead' means the good or evil act which he has done in his life; and the phrase 'what he left behind' means what he failed to do or refrained from doing. It is also possible that 'what he sent ahead' refers to the acts he has done himself, and 'what he left behind' refers to the acts one has not done himself, but he has laid down a custom in the society. The Holy Prophet is reported to have said: "If anyone establishes a good tradition in Islam, he will have a reward for it and the equivalent of the rewards of those who act upon it after him, without theirs being diminished in any respect; but he who establishes a bad custom in Islam will bear the responsibility of it and the responsibility of those who act upon it after him, without theirs being diminished in any respect." This subject was dealt with earlier under the following verse:'Man will be informed of what he sent ahead and what he left behind. [53:13]'

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

What he sent ahead’ means what he did in the worldly life for the life of the Hereafter, and ‘what he left behind’ means the good deeds he could not do during his life in the world.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

These verses also depict the scene of Judgment Day. Allah Ta'ala says, "When the sky splits, the stars fall, the oceans are poured forth (i.e. fresh and salt water bodies will merge to become one mass of water) and graves tipped over (i.e. corpses will emerge from their graves), every soul shall come to know what it had sent ahead and left behind" While the first three occurrences will take place after the first blowing of the trumpet, the fourth will take place after the second blowing. The author of "Ruhul Ma'ani" states that when all waters become one, they will seep into the earth and no water will be left on the surface of the earth.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The words ma qaddamat wa akhkharat can have several meanings and all are implied here:
(1) Ma qaddamat is the good or evil act which man has sent forward, and ma akhkharat is what he refrained from doing. Thus, these Arabic words correspond to the acts of commission and omission in one's life.
(2) Ma qaddainat is what one did earlier and ma akhkharat what one did later; i.e. the whole life-work of man will appear before him date-wise and in proper sequence
(3) Whatever good and evil deeds a man did in his life is ma qaddamat and whatever effects and influences of his acts he left behind for human society is ma akhkharat.

O man! What has seduced thee from thy Lord Most Beneficent?-

O man! What has lured you away from your gracious Rabb,

: (O man!) i.e. O disbelieving man; here referring specifically to Kildah Ibn Usayd (What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord) when you disbelieved in Him, (the Bountiful) the Forgiving

: O, disbelieving, man! What has deceived you with regard to your generous Lord?, so that you have disobeyed Him,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Having stated the creative acumen of the Great Creator, the verse states: (O man! What has deceived you about your Gracious Lord, ... 82:6). Allah has endowed man with such natural faculties and abilities that every limb and every joint of his body was enough to remind him of His Creator, and to make him obedient. But he is lured away from his gracious Lord, has forgotten Him and disobeyed Him. The question is: How did he forget his Lord, how did he become heedless of Him, and how is he lured away from his Lord? On this occasion, the adjective karim (Gracious) used for the 'Lord' points to the answer. The reason for such an ungrateful attitude is that Allah is Gracious and does not punish man immediately after his committing a sin. Rather, his sustenance, welfare and well-being, and worldly comforts [and pleasures] are not curtailed. He misinterprets Allah's magnanimity, and thus falls into deception. If man were to think rationally, he would adopt a grateful attitude and obedient behaviour, rather than adopting an ungrateful attitude and impudent behaviour.
Sayyidna Hasan Al-Basri 'How many humans are there whose faults are put [by Allah] under cover, (i.e. He did not disgrace them), yet they do not appreciate (and are deluded by His grace.'

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

O man! What has deceived you about your Gracious Lord,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Describing the creation of man, Allah Ta'ala reminds man to turn his attention towards Allah. Man was absolutely nothing when Allah created him, perfected his form and, according to His perfect wisdom, made him as He pleased. Neither did man have the option to be created nor did he have a choice to decide his height, size or features. Every person is as Allah made him and
lives in this condition. It is now incumbent on every man to accept the commands of Allah that His Prophets taught and to practise Allah's religion.

Among men there are those who have accepted Allah's Religion and those who have rejected. There are also those who have accepted Allah's religion but they still neglect His commands. They do not fulfil the Fara'idh (obligations) and continue sinning. When it is brought to their attention that this type of life is
incorrect, their Nafs (carnal self ) and Satan fool them into thinking that there is no need to curb their ways because Allah is Magnanimous and will continue forgiving them. They fail to realise that because Allah is so Magnanimous, He
deserves to be obeyed.

The weakness of man is that he has no sense of loyalty and is not faithful to
Allah. Despite the innumerable bounties that Allah bestows on man, man still
disobeys Him. Even if it were certain that every sin will be forgiven without
punishment, it would still be incumbent to obey Allah's commands. Obeying
Allah's commands merely because one fears punishment is a sign of disloyalty.
A loyal servant shivers at the mere thought of disobeying Allah. Such a servant
looks at the great bounties that Allah blesses him with and without concentrating
only on the punishment for disobedience, he applies himself to fulfilling the
command at hand. In fact, he regards leading a life of disobedience as a
punishment of its own. Although punishment causes physical pain, the pain that
the faithful servant feels when he is found to be disloyal is greater than the pain
of any punishment.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "In the first place, the bounty and favor of your Beneficent Sustainer required that you should have acknowledged his bounties and become an obedient servant and should have felt shy of disobeying Him, but you were deluded into thinking that you have become whatever you are by your own effort, and you never thought that you should acknowledge that favor of Him Who gave you life. Secondly, it is your Lord's bounty and kindness that you can freely do whatever you like in the world and it never so happens that whenever you happen to commit an error, He should punish you with paralysis, or blind your eyes, or cause lightning to strike you. But you took His bountifulness for weakness and were beguiled into thinking that the Kingdom of your God was devoid of justice "

6003. Cf. xv. 29. Allah not only created man, but fashioned him in due proportions. giving him extraordinary capacities, and the means wherewith he can fulfil his high destiny.
6Ot}.l . See n. 834 to vi. l. Having given a limited free-will. He gave us a just bias through our reason and our spiritual faculties. If we err. it is our will that is at fault.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Who created you, fashioned you, proportioned you,

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Who created thee) a living being from a sperm drop, (then fashioned) in the womb of your mother, (then proportioned thee) then made your stature erect?

Tafseer Jalalain

- Who created you, when you were not, then made you upright, in your created form, with sound limbs, then proportioned you (read fa-‘adalak or fa-‘addalak), making you symmetrical in shape, with well-proportioned parts, so that no hand or leg is longer than the other,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The verse further goes on to remind man of the inceptive stages of his creation. First, it says: (who created you, then perfected you, ... 82:7). The sense is that not only did Allah create man, but He also perfected his creation and proportioned his body, limbs and organs. Every limb and organ is well placed. The body, height, length and breadth of every limb are kept in harmony, symmetry and balance. Any deviation from the symmetrical construction of the human body, the organs will become dysfunctional. Then the verse says: (...then brought you in due proportion?. . .82:7). Man is granted such symmetry, harmony and balance that no other animal in the world is granted to that degree. Along with physical and physiological symmetry and harmony, he has been granted well-balanced disposition, despite the fact that man is made up of opposing humours - blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. Some are hot and others are cold, and yet the perfect wisdom of Allah prepared a well-balanced disposition. Thereafter a third characteristic is mentioned as follows:

That is, "There is no reasonable ground for you to be deluded. Your own physical existence itself tells that you did not come into being by yourself; your parents also did not make you. Man also did not come about as a result of the elements combining together by themselves accidentally; but a Wise and Powerful God has composed you into this perfect human shape and form. There are other kinds of animals in the world compared with which your excellent form and structure and your superior powers and faculties stand out in sharp contrast. Reason demanded that in view of all this you should have submitted gratefully and should never have dared commit disobedience of your beneficent Sustainer. You also know that your Lord and Sustainer is not only Compassionate and Bountiful but Almighty and Omnipotent as well. When an earthquake, cyclone or flood occurs by His Command, all your devices and measures tail to be effective. You also know that your Lord and Sustainer is not ignorant and foolish but Wise and knowing, and the necessary demand of wisdom and knowledge is that whoever is given intellect should also be held responsible for his acts; whoever is given powers should also be held accountable as to how he used those powers; and whoever is given the choice to do good or evil on his own responsibility, should also be rewarded for his good act and punished for his evil act. All these truths are clearly and plainly known to you; therefore, you cannot say that there exists a reasonable ground for you to be deluded concerning your Lord. Your own nature is sufficient evidence that the beneficence of the Master should never cause the servant to be fearless of Him, and be involved in the misunderstanding that he may do whatever he pleases, no one can harm him in any way.

(6005) By "Form" (Surah) here I understand the general shape of things in which any given personality is placed, including his physical and social environments, his gifts of mind and spirit, and all that goes to make up his outer and inner life. The Grace of Allah is shown in all these things, for His Will is formed from perfect knowledge, wisdom, and goodness.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(He composed you in whichever form He willed .... 82:8). This is to indicate that since the basic structure of all human beings is the same, it was expected that the zillions of members of the human society would have shared the same shape, size and features, but the perfect mastery and the wonderful acumen of the Supreme Creator has created them so differently that each one of them has its own unique features that make him clearly distinct from all others, and no one is confused with another.
Having stated the creative acumen of the Great Creator, the verse states: (0 man! What has deceived you about your Gracious Lord, ... 82:6). Allah has endowed man with such natural faculties and abilities that every limb and every joint of his body was enough to remind him of His Creator, and to make him obedient. But he is lured away from his gracious Lord, has forgotten Him and disobeyed Him. The question is: How did he forget his Lord, how did he become heedless of Him, and how is he lured away from his Lord? On this occasion, the adjective karim (Gracious) used for the 'Lord' points to the answer. The reason for such an ungrateful attitude is that Allah is Gracious and does not punish man immediately after his committing a sin. Rather, his sustenance, welfare and well-being, and worldly comforts [and pleasures] are not curtailed. He misinterprets Allah's magnanimity, and thus falls into deception. If man were to think rationally, he would adopt a grateful attitude and obedient behaviour, rather than adopting an ungrateful attitude and impudent behaviour. Sayyidna Hasan Al-Basri says: 'How many humans are there whose faults are put [by Allah] under cover, (i.e. He did not disgrace them), yet they do not appreciate (and are deluded by His grace.'

The goodness and mercies of Allah, and His constant watchful care of all His creatures should make men grateful, instead of which they turn away from the Right and deny the Day of Sorting Out, the Day when every action performed here will find its fulfilment in just reward or punishment.

Nay! In fact you deny the Day of Judgment!

(Nay) truly, (but they) the Quraysh (deny the Judgement) and the Reckoning

No indeed! — a deterrent against letting oneself be misled by the generosity of God, exalted be He. Rather you, that is, disbelievers of Mecca, deny Judgement, requital for deeds;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Never! (i.e. one should never be heedless towards him.) But you deny the Requital,

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

- But you deny the Requital,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah says, "It should never be!" i.e. one should never be deceived by his Nafs (carnal self ) and by Satan. By being deceived, one will harm only oneself. The result of this is that people will deny that retribution will take place and they will become reckless in their behaviour. For this reason, Allah reminds them, "Verily there are guardians upon you who are noble (in Allah's sight) and are recording. They know what you do."
It is therefore best for people to carry out good deeds and to refrain from sins.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is,"You have not been deluded and beguiled by any good reason but by your foolish concept that there is going to be no meting out of rewards and punishments after the life of this world. It is this wrong and baseless concept which has made you heedless of God, fearless of His justice and irresponsible in your moral attitude. "

(6007) Besides the faculties given to man to guide him, and the Form and Personality through which he can rise by stages to the Presence of Allah, there are spiritual agencies around him to help and protect him, and to note down his Record, so that perfect justice may be done to him at the end. For these Guardian Angels, see 50:17-18, and n. 4954.

You should know that guardian angels have indeed been appointed over you,

(Lo! there are above you guardians) among the angels who guard and preserve your works,

Yet lo! there are above you watchers, from among the angels, over your deeds,

This refers to the angels appointed on every person to record his or her deeds.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "whether you deny the meting out of rewards and punishments, belie it, or mock it, the reality cannot change. The reality is that your Lord has not left you to your self in the world, but has appointed over each one of you honest and upright guardians, who are recording objectively and faithfully all your good and evil acts, and none of your acts is hidden from them, whether you commit it in darkness, or in private, or in far off jungles, or in secret when you are fully satisfied that whatever you have done bas remained hidden from human eye. For these guardian angels Allah has used the words kiraman katibin, i.e. writers who are honorable and noble They are neither attached in personal love with somebody, nor are inimical to anybody, so that they would prepare a fictitious record on the basis of their favoring one man and disfavoring another unduly. They are neither dishonest that without being present on duty they would make wrong entries by themselves; nor are they bribable so that they would take bribes and make false reports in favor of or against somebody. They are far above these moral weaknesses. Therefore, both the good and the bad people should be fully satisfied that each man's good acts will be recorded without any omission, and no one will have an evil act recorded in his account which he has not done. Then the second quality that has been mentioned of these angels is: "They know whatever you do " That is, they are not like the secret, intelligence agencies of the world, from which, despite all their search and scrutiny, many things remain hidden. They are fully aware of everyone's deeds. They accompany every person, at all places, under all conditions, in such a way that he himself does not know that someone is watching him, and they also know with what intention has somebody done a certain thing. Therefore the record prepared by them is a complete record in which nothing has been left un-recorded. About this very thing it has been said in Surah Al-Kahf 49: "Woe to us! What sort of a book it is, it has left nothing unrecorded of our doings, small or great. They will see before them everything, whatever they had done."

Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure,(13)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

As for the Righteous, they will be in bliss;

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

On that Day, the righteous will surely be in bliss;

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Lo! the righteous) who are true in their faith: Abu Bakr and his believing brothers (verily will be in delight) in the Garden whose bliss is everlasting.

Tafseer Jalalain

Indeed the pious, the believers who are sincere in their faith, shall be amid bliss, [in] Paradise,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(Surely the righteous will be in bliss, and surely the sinners will be in Hell, ... 82:13-14) These two statements are connected with verse [5] above: 'then one will know what he sent ahead and what he left behind. [5]’
The verse informs us that each person, on the Day of Reckoning, will know what he has done, and what will be the consequences of his deeds. The present verse says that the righteous will be in perfect bliss, while the sinners will be in a Blazing Fire of Hell

Surely the righteous will be in bliss,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah then briefly describes the retribution that will take place on the Day of judgement. Allah says, "Indeed the righteous shall be immersed in bounties and the sinners will surely be in Hell which they will enter on the Day of Retribution.
They will certainly not be absent from it." They will have to suffer eternally in Hell and will unable to escape. Allah refers to the same in Surah Ma'idah when he says,“They will try to escape from the fire, but they will not be able to escape and theirs will be a permanent chastisement." [Surah 5,verse 37]

Surely the virtuous shall be in Bliss,

And the Wicked - they will be in the Fire,

while the wicked will indeed be in hell,

(And lo! the wicked) Kildah and his fellow disbelievers (verily will be in hell;

and indeed the profligates, the disbelievers, shall be in Hell-fire, a scorching fire,

And never therefrom will they be absent.(16)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

(6008) I understand this relative clause to govern "the Fire", i.e., the Punishment. It will be postponed as long as possible, to give the Sinner every chance of repentance and amendment. But once the period of probation is past, it will be irrevocable. There will be no going back from it. By inference, the Righteous may individually reach some stage of Bliss at once, possibly in this life, possibly after death, though the Final Judgement will be the general and complete cessation of this fleeting world and the creation of the world of Eternity.

(And will not) i.e. the disbelievers (be absent thence) whence they enter it.

(6009) We can speak of Rewards and Punishments, the Fruits of Actions, the Resurrection and the Tribunal, the Restoration of True Values, the Elimination of all Wrong, and a hundred other phrases. They might serve to introduce our minds vaguely to a new World, of which they cannot possibly form any adequate conception under present conditions. The question is repeated in verses 17-18 to emphasise this difficulty, and a simple answer is suggested, as explained in the next note.

يَوْمَ لَا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌۭ لِّنَفْسٍۢ شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ وَٱلْأَمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ لِّلَّهِ.(19)
