Translation Sahih International

By the night when it covers(1)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The evidence of three things in invoked. Viz - .. Night. Day. and sex and the conclusion is stated in verse 4, that men's aims are diverse. But similarly there are contrasts in nature . What contrast can be greater than between Night and Day? When the night spreads her veil the sun's light is hidden but not lost.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

By the night, as it covers with darkness.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

And from his narration on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that he said regarding the interpretation of Allah's saying: (By the night enshrouding): '(By the night enshrouding) He says: Allah swears by the night when it enshrouds the light of day.

Tafseer Jalalain

By the night as it enshrouds, with its darkness all that is between the heaven and the earth.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

I swear by the night when it covers (the sun).

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

I swear by the night when it covers (the sun).

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

- Allah commences with three oaths. Allah says -
"By the night when it covers!
By the day when it illuminates! By the One Who created male and female!" These three oaths are taken to emphasise that "Verily your efforts are varied". The above three oaths are taken because humans are either male or female and the deeds of these two categories are carried out either by day or by night. However, these deeds
are extremely diverse.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This is that for which an oath has been sworn by the night and the day, It means to say: Just as the night and the day , are different from each other, and their effects and results are mutually contradictory, so are the aims and objects for which men are endeavoring and struggling, different in their nature and contradictory with regard to their results.

And [by] the day when it appears(2)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The sun is in his place all the time and will come forth in all his glory again in his own good time. Cf. xci. 3, 4 , and n. 6149. Man pursuing diverse aims may find, owing to his own position , Allah's light obscured from him for a time, but he must strive hard to put himself in a position to reach it in all its glory.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

And by the day, as it spreads its brightness.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And the day resplendent) and the day when it clears the darkness of night.

Tafseer Jalalain

And [by] the day as it unveils, [as] it is revealed and becomes manifest (idhā, ‘as’, in both instances is an absolute adverbial, operated by the verbal action of the oath).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Each morning when a man gets up, he goes to conduct his business and keeps himself busy. His business is either successful and emancipates himself from Hell, or unsuccessful and his efforts become the cause of his destruction." Therefore, a wise person should first apply his mind to think
whether his efforts will pay dividends, and he should never undertake those efforts that bring about temporary comfort and pleasure, but eternal perdition and grief,

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And by the day when it unveils itself.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah commences with three oaths.

Sayyidina Abu Malik Ash'ari radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Holy Prophet saws said - Each morning people go to work and keep themselves busy. They either emancipate themselves (from Hell) or destroy themselves (by sinning)." [ Muslims v. 1 p. 118 ].

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

And [by] He who created the male and female,(3)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The wonder of the sexes runs through all life. There is attraction between opposite ; each performs its own functions , having special characters, primary and secondary, within limited spheres and yet both have common characteristics in many other spheres. Each is indispensable to the other. Love in its noblest sense is the type of heavenly love and the highest good ; in its debasement it leads to the lowest sins and the worst crimes. Here, then, striving is necessary for the highest good.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

And by Him Who created the male and the female.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

And Him Who hath created) and by Him Who has created the (male and female.

Tafseer Jalalain

And [by] the One Who (mā either functions as man, ‘the One Who’, or it is related to a verbal action) created the male and the female, Adam and Eve, or every male and female — the hermaphrodite, although problematic for us, is [in fact] either male or female according to God, and therefore a person [actually] commits perjury if he speaks with one [thinking that] because he has sworn not to speak with a male or a female; [he may do so with a hermaphrodite].

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Ayat 4

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ.(4)

Indeed, your efforts are diverse.(4) [Al-Lail: 4]

Back to surah / Surah 092 · Al-Lail / Ayah 4

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

Indeed, your efforts are diverse.(4)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

There are wide contrasts in the nature and aims of men. These may be broadly divided into two classes - good and evil. As night replaces day on account of certain relative position, but does not annihilate it, so evil may for a time obscure good but cannot blot it out. Again, night in certain circumstances (e.g.for rest) is a blessing ; so certain things , which may seem evil to us, may be really blessings in disguise. Whatever our aims or positions, we must seek the highest truth from the light of Allah. Considering these contrasts, do not be surprised or depressed. Men’s immediate aims may be different. The duty of is to seek the one true light.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

- This Sûrah identifies two different ways of life and explains the contrast between their ultimate ends and results. The first way is of the one who spends his wealth, adopts God-consciousness and piety, and acknowledges the good as good. The second way is of the one who is a miser, does not care for Allah's pleasure or displeasure, and repudiates what is good and right. It is stated that these two modes of action, which are clearly opposite to each other, cannot be equal and alike in respect of their results. Just as they are different in their nature, so are they different in their results.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

There are those who oppose and disbelieve in Muhammad (pbuh) and the Qur'an and there are those who believe in Muhammad (pbuh); there are those who strive for Paradise and there are those who strive for hell. This is why Allah made the oath.

Tafseer Jalalain

Assuredly your efforts, your deeds, are dissimilar, with some working towards Paradise by means of obedience, while others [in effect] are working towards the Fire through [acts of] disobedience.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(Your efforts are diverse.. . .92:4). This statement is like the
statement in Surah Inshiqaq, verse [84:6] -
'O man, you have to work hard constantly to reach your Lord.
[يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ]
which has already been explained in that Surah. The sense is that man,
by his nature, is used to making efforts for one objective or another. But
the nature and the results of these efforts are different. Some people work
hard for an objective that brings eternal happiness to them, and others
work hard for an objective that makes them suffer eternal perdition. It is
reported in a Tradition that the Messenger of Allah & said: "Each
morning when a man gets up, he goes to conduct his business and keeps
himself busy. His business is either successful and emancipates himself
from Hell, or unsuccessful and his efforts become the cause of his
destruction." Therefore, a wise person should first apply his mind to think
whether his efforts will pay dividends, and he should never undertake
those efforts that bring about temporary comfort and pleasure, but
eternal perdition and grief, The Two Diverse Types of human efforts divide humankind into two groups . The Qur'an further shows that, broadly speaking, the humankind may be divided into two opposing groups in terms of their opposing
efforts. Each of the two groups are characterised by three qualities. The
first group is a successful one, and its three characteristics are: [I] they
give in charity in the cause of Allah; [21 fear Allah and avoid violating the
injunctions of Allah in every aspect of life; and [3] believe in the 'best
word'. The 'best words' refer to the credo of 'there is no god but Allah' [as
Ibn 'Abbas, Dahhak radi Allahu anhuma have explained]. Testifying to the kalimah
signifies 'to profess the True Faith'. Faith or belief is the essence of all
actions, and comes first in order of rank, but on this occasion, it is
mentioned last, probably because the main theme in this context is that of
physical exertion, efforts and actions. 'lm~n or faith, on the other hand,
pertains to the heart. It signifies the acceptance and confirmation of Allah
and His Messenger with one's heart. Confession of this must be made by
means of reciting kalimah shahadah 'testimony of faith'. Obviously, none
of these things involve physical exertion or effort, nor are they generally
counted as actions. The second group is [the unsuccessful one] and its three
characteristics are: [I] they are misers to such an extent that they even
fail to pay the zakah and other obligatory alms; [2]they deem themselves
self-sufficient rather than obeying Allah; and [3] they reject the 'best
word' [that is, the kalimah of 'Iman].

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Your efforts are diverse

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

The three oaths in this Surah are taken because humans are either male or female and the deeds of these two categories are carried out either by day or by night. However, these deeds are extremely diverse. The people of the world consist of Muslims and disbelievers, each group having people who are either good or evil. Allah will judge these deeds on the day of Judgment and each person will receive what is due to him. Sayyidina Abu Malik Ash'ari radi Allahu anhu narrated that the Holy Prophet saws said - each morning people go to work and keep themselves busy. They either emancipate themselves( from Hell) or destroy themselves (by sinning)." [ Muslims v. 1 p. 118 ].

Allah Ta'ala then classifies the deeds of man as either good or evil.
Every person carries out deeds in his life because this world is a place of
deeds. These deeds vary according to the type and nature of every person. As
people keep changing, so as their deeds. One will often find evil people
becoming good, good people becoming evil, disbelievers becoming Muslims and
vice versa. This process continues in this world. However, in the Hereafter, every
person will belong only to one of the two groups and he cannot change groups.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Their effects and results are mutually contradictory, so are the aims and objects for which men are endeavoring and struggling, different in their nature and contradictory with regard to their results. In the following verses, it has been told that all these divided endeavors are divided into two main kinds.
This is the first kind of endeavors, which includes three things, and a little consideration shows that they comprehend all virtues:
(1) That Man should refrain from wealth-worship, but should spend whatever Allah has given him generously in rendering Allah's and His servants' rights, for good works and for helping others;
(2) that he should fear God and refrain from things which cause His displeasure in his moral, social, economic and other dealings with the people;
(3) that he should believe in goodness. Goodness is a comprehensive word, which includes goodness of belief, morals and acts. Goodness of belief means that one should give up polytheism; atheism, and disbelief, and affirm faith in Tauhid, the Hereafter, and Prophethood. Affirming belief in goodness of morals and acts is that one should not be doing good and right merely unconsciously, outside a definite system, but one should acknowledge as right and sound the system of goodness which God has sent, which combines every kind of goodness in all its forms and aspects into a system comprehensively called the Divine Shari'ah.

This is the second kind of human endeavoring, which in every part of it is different from the corresponding part of the first kind. Niggardliness (bukhl) is not merely the niggardliness because of which people generally regard a person as niggardly if he hoards money: neither spends it on himself nor on his children, but bukhl here implies to refrain from spending in the cause of Allah and public welfare. According to this, niggardly is every person who spends generously, rather squanders money, on his self, for his own ease and comfort, interests and enjoyments, but, as. for a good cause, spends nothing, or, if at all he spends anything, it is for display, or to win a reputation and name, or to have access to officers, or to obtain some benefit and gain.

Tafseer Jalalain

And affirms the truth of the best [word], that is, [the truth] of ‘there is no god but God’

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The Qur'an further shows that, broadly speaking, the humankind may be divided into two opposing groups in terms of their opposing efforts. Each of the two groups are characterised by three qualities. The first group is a successful one, and its three characteristics are: [I] they give in charity in the cause of Allah; [21 fear Allah and avoid violating the injunctions of Allah in every aspect of life; and [3] believe in the 'best word'. The 'best words' refer to the credo of 'there is no god but Allah' [as Ibn 'Abbas, Dahhak radi Allahu anhuma have explained]. Testifying to the kalimah signifies 'to profess the True Faith'. Faith or belief is the essence of all actions, and comes first in order of rank, but on this occasion, it is mentioned last, probably because the main theme in this context is that of physical exertion, efforts and actions. 'lman or faith, on the other hand,
pertains to the heart. It signifies the acceptance and confirmation of Allah and His Messenger with one's heart. Confession of this must be made by means of reciting kalimah shahadah 'testimony of faith'. Obviously, none of these things involve physical exertion or effort, nor are they generally counted as actions.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And believes in the best (religion)

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

"As for the one who gives (charity ), who fears Allah and who believes in the most beautiful word (i.e. in the Kalimah (‘La ilaha illallah’’). Some commentators have interpreted "A1 Husna" (translated above as "the most beautiful word) as Heaven.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This is the first kind of endeavors, which includes three things, and a little consideration shows that they comprehend all virtues:
(1) That Man should refrain from wealth-worship, but should spend whatever Allah has given him generously in rendering Allah's and His servants' rights, for good works and for helping others; (2) that he should fear God and refrain from things which cause His displeasure in his moral, social, economic and other dealings with the people; (3) that he should believe in goodness.

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

We will ease him toward ease.(7)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

So far from there being any hardship in a good life , the righteous will enjoy their life more and more and Allah will make their path smoother and smoother until they reach eventual bliss.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

We shall facilitate for him the Path to good.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

We shall make easy for him acts of obedience and give
him success, time and again, to perform acts of obedience; and it is also said this means: We shall give him success, time and again, to give alms for the sake of Allah; this refers to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.

Tafseer Jalalain

We shall surely ease his way to [the abode of] ease, to Paradise.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The word yusra literally denotes 'ease
and comfort' or a thing in which there is no difficulty, but here it refers to
"Paradise". Those who exert their efforts in the first three acts, that is, spending in the cause of Allah, fearing Allah and testifying to the kalimah, Allah will
pave their way to extreme ease, that is, to deeds that will lead them to the
comforts of Paradise. This probably implies that the first group will be predisposed to behave in a particular way that behaving otherwise will make them feel uneasy.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

This means that if a person employs his ability*
in the good deeds mentioned in verses 5 and 6, Allah makes it easy for him to perform other good deeds that lead him to the extreme comforts of Paradise.
This verse indicates that charitable acts purify one from evil deeds in the
sense that his former sins mav be forgiven because of such acts, and he may be
fortified against the evil instincts of his base desires and from temptations of
Satan. The only condition is that these charitable acts are performed with
sincere intention to please Allah and to purify oneself, and not for showing off
one’s generosity. It is reported in some narrations that this verse was revealed
in admiration of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu , who spent a large amount of his wealth for freeing the slaves persecuted by the pagans because of their having embraced Islam. This is an expression to denote Allah’s pleasure.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

We shall make it easy for him to
adopt the traits of comfort (Iman and good deeds).

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

But after man has affirmed goodness and resolved to follow this way, and giving away his wealth in the cause of God and adopting the way of taqwa, has practically strengthened his resolve, ascending the steep road becomes easy and slipping into the abyss of moral depravities becomes difficult for him.

Ayat 8

وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ.(8)

But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need(8) [Al-Lail: 8]

Back to surah / Surah 092 · Al-Lail / Ayah 8

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need(8)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The evil are distinguished here by three signs : (1) selfish greed and denial of other people’s rights ; (2) arrogance and self sufficiency …….

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The second way is of the one who is a miser, does not care for Allah's pleasure or displeasure, and repudiates what is good and right.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(But as for him who hoardeth) his wealth and is too stingy to give for the sake of Allah, in reference here to al-Walid Ibn al-Mughirah and it is said: Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb who was not a believer at that time (and deemeth himself independent) of Allah,

Tafseer Jalalain

But as for him who is niggardly, with what is due to God, and deems himself self-sufficient, without need for His reward, [92:9] and denies the best [word],

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The second group is [the unsuccessful one] and its three
characteristics are: [I] they are misers to such an extent that they even
fail to pay the zakah and other obligatory alms; [21 they deem themselves
self-sufficient rather than obeying Allah;

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

But the one who is miser and deems himself self-sufficient

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Concerning the miserly person, Allah adds that he is also "indifferent" i.e. indifferent towards the rewards promised for spending in Allah's path. Therefore, together with his excessive love for wealth, such a person also behaves as if he has no need for the rewards of the Hereafter.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Niggardliness (bukhl) is not merely the niggardliness because of which people generally regard a person as niggardly if he hoards money: neither spends it on himself nor on his children, but bukhl here implies to refrain from spending in the cause of Allah and public welfare. According to this, niggardly is every person who spends generously, rather squanders money, on his self, for his own ease and comfort, interests and enjoyments, but, as. for a good cause, spends nothing, or, if at all he spends anything, ii is for display, or to win a reputation and name, or to have access to officers, or to obtain some benefit and gain. Independence of God implies that one should make worldly, material benefits only the object of all one's endeavors and strivings and being independent of God should least care to see what pleases Him and what displeases Him.

وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ.(9)

And denies the best [reward],(9) [Al-Lail: 9]

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

And denies the best [reward],(9)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The evil are distinguished here by three signs : of which the third is - knowingly dishonouring truth out of spite , or seeing ugliness where there is beauty.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The second way is of the one who is a miser, does not care for Allah's pleasure or displeasure, and repudiates what is good and right.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And disbelieveth in goodness) and disbelieves in Allah's provision; and it is also said: in Paradise; and it is also said: in " there is no deity save Allah " ;

Tafseer Jalalain

And denies the best [word],

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

- The second group is [the unsuccessful one] and its third
characteristic is : they reject the 'best word' [that is, the kalimah of Iman].

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And rejects the best (religion),

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Concerning the miserly person, Allah adds that he is also "indifferent" i.e.indifferent towards the rewards promised for spending in Allah's path. Therefore, together with his excessive love for wealth, such a person also behaves as if he has no need for the rewards of the Hereafter.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

As for belying goodness, it is in sharp contrast to believing in goodness in every detail

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

We will ease him toward difficulty.(10)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The wretched one who rejects good, presented through the Rasool and the Book, and turns away from it, will have a blazing fire ready for him.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

We shall make easy for him acts of disobedience and refraining from giving to charity, time and again.

Tafseer Jalalain

We shall surely ease his way, We shall pave for him the way, to hardship, to the Fire;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The opposite of yusra is 'usra which literally denotes
'extreme distress, referring to "Hell". On the other hand, those who exert their efforts in the latter three acts(referred to in the previous two verses), Allah will pave their way to extreme distress, that is, make easy for them to perform deeds that will lead them to Hell. The second group will be predisposed to behave in a way that will make them feel comfortable to do deeds of Hell, and they will feel uneasy doing deeds of Paradise.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

On the contrary, if he employs his free will in the evil deeds mentioned in verse 7 and 8, Allah makes it easy for him to indulge in the acts that lead him to the extreme distress in Hell.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

As for the one who is miserly and
indifferent and who rejects the most beautiful word, We shall make it easy for him to adopt the traits of grief" i.e. because of these traits he will suffer grief and misery in both worlds.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

It means: He will be deprived of the grace to follow the way of good, gates of evil will be opened up for him, means and resources for the same will be provided for him, doing evil will become easy, and doing good will become toilsome and risky for him. This same theme has been expressed at another place in the Qur'an, thus: whomever He wills to let go astray, he makes his breast narrow and squeezes it so tightly that ( at the very idea of Islam) he begins to feel as though his soul were climbing up towards the sky." (Al-An`am :125). And about the hypocrites it has been said: "When they come to offer the salat, they come reluctantly and they expend in the way of Allah with unwilling hearts." (At-Taubah: 54), and that: "There are such among them, who regard what they expend in the way of Allah as a penalty." (At-Taubah: 98).

Ayat 11

وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ.(11)

And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?(11) [Al-Lail: 11]

Back to surah / Surah 092 · Al-Lail / Ayah 11

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?(11)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Wealth amassed in this world will be of no use at the day of final judgement, nor will any material advantages of this life bring profit by themselves in the Hereafter. What will count will be a life of truth and righteousness, and of goodness to all the creatures of Allah.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The wretched one who rejects good, presented through the Rasool and the Book, and turns away from it, will have a blazing fire ready for him.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(His riches) which he amasses in the life of the world (will not save him when he perisheth) when he dies; and it is also said this means: when he is cast in the Fire.

Tafseer Jalalain

And his wealth shall not (mā is or negation) avail him when he perishes, in the Fire.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Thereafter the unfortunate inmates of Hell are warned, thus: وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ (And his wealth will not help him when he will fall down ... 92:ll). The word taradda literally denotes 'to fall into a pit and perish'. The expression 'When he fall' signifies that when Divine decree regarding his destruction comes into operation, nothing - not even his wealth - will save him, whether in grave after his death, or on the Day of Judgement, when he will be falling into the abyss of Hell.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And his wealth will not help him when he will fall down (into Hell).

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

The wealth that this person hoards will be useless to him, as Allah states, "His wealth will not benefit him when befalls to destruction."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

In other words it means that he has to die one day and leave behind in the world whatever he had amassed for his ease and enjoyment. If he did not earn and send forward something for the Hereafter, what would this wealth avail him? He will not take his palatial residence, his majestic conveyance, his property and wealth into the grave.

Translation Sahih International

Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.(12)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Allah in His infinite mercy has provided full guidance to His creatures. All through His creation there are sign posts indicating the right way. To man He has given the five senses of perception , with mental and spiritual faculties for co ordinating his physical perceptions and leading him higher and higher in thought and feeling. He has besides sent inspired men as prophets for further teaching and guidance.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Allah has not left man uninformed in the examination hall of the world, but has taken on Himself the responsibility to tell him which one is the straight and Right Way out of the different ways of life. There is no need to point out that by sending His Rasools and His Books, He has fulfilled His responsibility.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance) it is for Us to show what is good and what is evil.

Tafseer Jalalain

Truly with Us lies [all] guidance, the pointing out of the path of guidance from that of error, so that Our command may be followed by adhering to the former [manner of conduct] and that Our prohibition [may also be heeded] by refraining from falling into the latter [manner of conduct].

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Of course, it is undertaken by Us to guide

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Of course, it is undertaken by Us to guide

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah has created man to recognise and worship Him. Allah has also sent the Prophets and the divine scriptures for man's guidance and to teach man how to worship Him. Whoever fails to respond to the guidance has only himself to blame for his destruction.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, Allah as the Creator of man has on the basis of His wisdom, His justice and His mercy, taken of Himself the responsibility not to leave him uninformed in the world, but to tell him what is the right way and what are the wrong ways, what is good and what is evil, what is lawful and what is unlawful, what attitude and conduct will make him an obedient servant and what attitude and conduct will make him a disobedient servant. This same thing has been expressed in Surah An-Nahl; thus: "Allah has taken upon Himself to show the Right Way, when there are also crooked ways." (v.9) (For explanation, See E.N. 9 of AnNahl).

And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].(13)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

In the end man will return to Allah and even from the beginning of man’s life Allah’s mercies and loving care surround him. In the probationary period of man’s life, he has a measure of free will , and he is expected to use it in such a way as to bring his whole being into harmony with the universal will and law. For he will have to answer for the right use of his talents and opportunities. If man’s will has any meaning , he has the choice of accepting Allah’s guidance or rejecting it and in the latter case he must take the consequences . Hence the warning of the future “Fire” in the next verse.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The Master of both, this world and the Hereafter, is Allah Alone. If you seek this world, it is He Who will give it, and if you seek the Hereafter, again it is He Who will give it. Now, it is for you to decide what you should seek from Him, one or both.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

- (And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former) and to Us belong the reward of the life of the world and that of the Hereafter; it is also said that this means: to Us belong the life of the world in which We bestow knowledge and success and also the Hereafter in which We bestow reward and honour.

Tafseer Jalalain

And truly to Us belong the Hereafter and the first [life], that is to say, [that of] this world, and so whoever seeks either of the two from anyone other than Us has erred.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

And in Our control is the Hereafter and the worldly life.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And in Our control is the Hereafter and the worldly life.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah also makes it clear that "the Hereafter and the world are in Our control " Allah reserves the right to do as He pleases in this world as well as in the Hereafter. No one should think that he is free to do as he pleases in this world and that none will be able to take him to task in the Hereafter.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

We alone are Master of both the worlds. If you seek the world, We alone can grant it; and if you seek the well being of the Hereafter, We alone have the power to bestow it too,". This very theme has been expressed in Al-`Imran: 145: "Whoso makes effort with the intention of the reward of this world, We will reward him in this world, and whoso makes effort with the intention of the reward of the Hereafter, We shall grant him thereof", and the same has been expressed in Ash-Shu`ara: 20, thus: "Whoever seeks the harvest of the Hereafter, We do increase his harvest; and whoever seeks the harvest of this world, We do give him of it here, but in the Hereafter he will have no share at all."

None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.(15)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The fire of punishment will not reach any except those who have deliberately sinned against their conscience and rejected Allah’s truth . The term used for them is “Ashqa” (superlative degree). Cf. lxxxvii . 11 . The corresponding idea in Christian theology is expressed in the following sentence - “All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men : but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men” (Matt . xii . 31).

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The wretched one who rejects good, presented through the Rasool and the Book, and turns away from it, will have a blazing fire ready for him.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This does not mean that no one will enter the fire except the most wretched one, and no one will be saved from it except the most pious one but the object is to describe the extremely contradictory fate of the two extremely contradictory' characters. One of them is the person who belies the teachings of Allah and His Messenger and turns away from obedience; the other one is the person, who not only believes but also spends his wealth in the cause of Allah sincerely, without any desire for display and reputation, only in order to be regarded as a pure man in His eyes. Both these types of character were present in the Makkah society of that day. Therefore., without mentioning any name, the people have been told that the man of the first type of character only will burn in the fire of Hell and not the man of the second type of character; the man of the second type of character only will be kept away from it and not the man of the first type of character.

Who had denied and turned away.(16)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The wretched one who rejects good, presented through the Rasool and the Book, and turns away from it, will have a blazing fire ready for him.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(He who denieth) Allah's divine Oneness; and it is also said: who falls short in obeying Allah (and turneth away) from faith; and it is also said: from repentance.

Tafseer Jalalain

He who denies, the Prophet, and turns away, from faith — this delimiting [of those who deserve to enter this fire] constitutes an interpretation of His saying, But He forgives other than that to whomever He will [Q. 4:48], which in turn suggests that what is meant is that entry [into the Fire] which will be everlasting.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

This describes the fire of Hell. It is quite clear that only a kafir will reject Allah and His Messenger. Apparently, it seems that a sinful believer who does not reject the truth will not enter Hell, whereas the Qur'an and Hadith are replete with clear texts that a sinful believer will enter Hell, unless he had repented, or someone interceded for him, or was forgiven out of pure Grace. He will abide in Hell until he has received punishment for the sins he has committed. After paying for his sins, he will be taken out of Hell, and through the blessings of his faith, he will be admitted into Paradise. Apparently, the wordings of the verse are contrary to this interpretation. Therefore, it is necessary that the interpretation of the verse under comment be brought in line with other Qur'anic verses and authentic Ahadith. Its plain and simple interpretation would be that this verse refers to entering the Hell for good, which is peculiar to the unbelievers. They will be tortured eternally in the Hell-fire. The sinful believers, on the other hand, will receive punishment for their sins and will eventually - at some time or the other - be taken out of Hell. Other scholars of Tafsir have given some other interpretations too, which can also be appropriate. Tafsir Mazhari has come up with another explanation according to which 'the wretched one' and 'the most God-fearing one' should not be taken in its general sense. Both words refer particularly to people who lived during the blessed time of the Holy Prophet saws
. From amongst them, no Muslim, who lived at that time, will enter Hell through the blessings of the Holy Prophet saws's company, even though he might have committed some sins incidentally.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

who rejected (the truth) and turned away (from it).

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah says, " I have warned you about a raging fire which only the most wretched shall enter, who denied and turned away. "Although it appears from this verse that only the disbelievers will enter Hell, the author of "Ruhul Ma'ani" states that the verse does not rule out punishment for sinful believers. He says that the verse merely restricts the severest punishment for the disbelievers ("the most wretched") because the punishment that sinful believers will receive will be much lighter.

But the righteous one will avoid it -(17)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

- “Those most devoted to Allah” : Atqa , the Allah - fearing men who live lives of purity , and seek only for the “Face of their Lord Most High”.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

As for the God-fearing person who spends his wealth in a good cause, without any selfish motive and only for the sake of his Rabb's pleasure, his Rabb will be pleased with him and will bless him with so much that he will be well pleased with his Rabb.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Far removed from it) from the Fire (will be the righteous)

Tafseer Jalalain

The God-fearing one (al-atqā means al-taqī) shall be spared it, he will be removed far away from it.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

This verse describes the reward of the most God-fearing person, as opposed to the punishment of the most wretched in the preceding verse. The word atqa is the superlative form and signifies a man of taqwa, that is, the most God-fearing person, who spends his wealth in obedience of his Lord in order to purify himself from sins, will be kept far away from the fire of Hell. The wordings of the verse give good news, in general, to anyone who spends in Allah's cause in a state of faith, but the occasion of revelation indicates that atqa refers to Sayyidina Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu in particular. Ibn Abi Hatim reports from Sayyidna 'Urwah radi Allahu anhu that seven Muslims had been enslaved by the Makkan disbelievers. When they became Muslims, they were persecuted in a variety of ways. Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu spent a great amount of his money, and purchased them and set them free. Verses 117-211 were revealed on this occasion. [Mazhari] .

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

And saved from it will be the most
God-fearing one

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

The word "atqa"(translated above as "most abstinent" ) is in the superlative form and refers to someone who not only refrains from disbelief and Polytheism but also from all other sins as well. Describing such a person, Allah says that he "spent his wealth to purify his soul" i.e. he spent his wealth so that he may join the ranks of those whom Allah considers as pure souls. The verse may also be interpreted to mean that he has the hope that Allah will greatly multiply the rewards for his charity. This will happen only if he spent without any worldly motives and only to please Allah.

[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself(18)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The spending may be for charity or for good works such as advancing the cause of knowledge or science, or supporting ideals etc “wealth” must be understood not only for money or material goods, but also for any advantage or opportunity which a man happens to enjoy, and which he can place at the service of others.

The Arabic root word zaka implies both increase and purification and both meanings may be understood to be implied here . Wealth (understood both literally and metaphorically) is not for selfish enjoyment or idle show . It is held on trust. It may be a trial in itself, from which a man who emerges successfully is a man all the purer in his life; and even if he was a good man before, his proper use of his wealth increases his position and dignity in the moral and spiritual world.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

As for the God-fearing person who spends his wealth in a good cause, without any selfish motive and only for the sake of his Rabb's pleasure, his Rabb will be pleased with him and will bless him with so much that he will be well pleased with his Rabb.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Who giveth his wealth) in the way of Allah, i.e. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (that he may grow (in goodness)) intending by that Allah's Countenance alone

Tafseer Jalalain

He who gives his wealth to purify himself, offering it as a [means of self] purification before God, exalted be He, by making this payment for the sake of God, exalted be He, and not for show or the sake of reputation, so that he [or the offering] stands purified in the sight of God. This [verse] was revealed regarding the truthful one (al-siddīq) [Abū Bakr], may God be pleased with him, when he purchased Bilāl [the Ethiopian], who was being tortured on account of his faith, and then freed him, whereat the disbelievers said, ‘He only did this in return for a favour which he [must have] owed him’, and so the following was revealed:

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The word atqa is the superlative form and signifies
a man of taqwa, that is, the most God-fearing person, who spends his
wealth in obedience of his Lord in order to purify himself from sins, will be
kept far away from the fire of Hell. The wordings of the verse give good news, in general, to anyone who spends in Allah's cause in a state of faith, but the occasion of revelation indicates that atqa refers to Sayyidna Abu Bakr As-Siddiq radi Allahu anhu in particular. Ibn Abu Hatim reports from Sayyidna 'Urwah radi Allahu anhu that seven Muslims had been enslaved by the Makkan disbelievers. When they
became Muslims, they were persecuted in a variety of ways. Sayyidna
Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu spent a great amount of his money, and purchased them
and set them free. Verses (17-21) were revealed on this occasion. [Mazhari] .

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

This verse indicates that charitable acts purify one from evil deeds in the sense that his former sins mav be forgiven because of such acts, and he may be fortified against the evil instincts of his base desires and from temptations of Satan. The only condition is that these charitable acts are performed with sincere intention to please Allah and to purify oneself, and not for showing off
one’s generosity. It is reported in some narrations that this verse was revealed
in admiration of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu who spent a large amount of his wealth for freeing the slaves persecuted by the pagans because of their having embraced Islam.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Describing such a person, Allah says that he "spent his wealth to purify his soul" i.e. he spent his wealth so that he may join the ranks of those whom Allah considers as pure souls. The verse may also be interpreted to mean that he has the hope that Allah will greatly multiply the rewards for his charity. This will happen only if he spent without any worldly motives and only to please Allah.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

the other one is the person, who not only believes but also spends his wealth in the cause of Allah sincerely, without any desire for display and reputation, only in order to be regarded as a pure man in His eyes.

وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍۢ تُجْزَىٰٓ.(19)

And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded(19) [Al-Lail: 19]

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded(19)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The good man does not give in charity or do his good deeds with the motive that he is returning someone else’s favour and compensating and rewarding someone for some service done to him or expecting some reward in return for his own good deed : the sole motive in his mind is that he desires the countenance or good pleasure of Allah Most High. This “countenance” or “face” (Arabic , wajh) not only implies good pleasure or approval ; but it implies something more. It also means cause - either the “final cause” or the “efficient cause” of Aristotelian philosophy. For the Atqa would refer everything backwards in origin and forwards in destiny, to Allah. Allah is the source of their goodness, as well as its goal or purpose.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

not seeking any favor from anyone for which a reward is expected in return

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And none hath with him any favour for reward

Tafseer Jalalain

and no one has any favour [outstanding] with him that must be requited;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Sayyidna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu did this great favour by spending abundant wealth. The emancipated slaves had not done him any favour in the past, so that one could say that he was returning their favour.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Speaking further about this person, Allah says, "He does not have to repay a favour to anyone..." i.e. he is not spending his wealth because he owes a favour to someone. Commentators state that the concluding five verses of this Surah refer to Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu who sacrificed a great deal of effort and wealth for the cause of Islam before and after the Hijrah (migration). Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu was an Abyssinian slave of Umayyah bin Khalaf and used to be tortured and beaten mercilessly. Upon an indication of the Holy Prophet saws Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu purchased Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu and set him free. When the Polytheists learnt about this, they taunted Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu by saying that he bought the freedom of Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu because he owed a favour to Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu Refuting this, Allah Ta'ala
revealed the verse: "He does not have to repay a favour to anyone (and spends for no reason ) except for the pleasure of his Exalted Lord."

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This is further explanation of the sincerity of the pious man. He was not indebted in any way to the people on whom he spends his wealth so that he may be doing so in order to repay for favors received, or may be giving gifts and holding banquets to them in order to further benefit from them, but he is helping such people only in order to seek the goodwill of his Lord, the Supreme. He was neither indebted to them before, nor he expects any favors from them in the future. Its best illustration is the act of Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah blesshim), He would purchase and set free the poor slaves and slaves-girls who accepted Islam in Makkah and were cruelly treated by their masters on that account. Ibn Jarir and Ibn 'Asakir have related, on the authority of Hadrat 'Amir bin 'Abdullah bin Zubair, that when Hadrat Abu Bakr's father saw him spending money to purchase the freedom of the poor slaves and slave-girls, he said to him: "Son, I see that you are getting the weak people free; had you spent this money on the freedom of strong, young men, they would have become your helpers and supporters." Hadrat Abu Bakr replied: "Dear father, I only seek the reward that is with Allah."

Ayat 20

إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ.(20)

But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.(20) [Al-Lail: 20]

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.(20)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The definition of righteousness, charity or self sacrifice becomes thus highly spiritualized. The atqa are so completely identified with Allah’s Will that everything else is blotted out to them. What would seem to be sacrifice from other points of view, becomes their own highest pleasure and satisfaction. Every virtuous man will have his own bliss, for there are degrees in virtue and bliss. This supreme bliss is the portion - not the prize - of supreme virtue.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

As for the God-fearing person who spends his wealth in a good cause, without any selfish motive and only for the sake of his Rabb's pleasure, his Rabb will be pleased with him and will bless him with so much that he will be well pleased with his Rabb.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High) except seeking the good pleasure of his Lord the Most High, Who is higher than everything.

Tafseer Jalalain

but, he did this, only seeking the pleasure of his Lord the Most High, that is to say, only seeking [to secure] God’s reward;

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

- Mustadrak of Hakim records that it was a usual practice of Sayyidna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu that he used to purchase Muslim slaves from the disbelievers and set them free whenever he found them in their bondage. Generally, these people were weak and helpless. Abu Qahafah, the father of Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu said to him: "Since you are emancipating slaves, why do you not set free strong and brave people, so that they may assist you in fighting the enemies and protect you." He replied: "My purpose of emancipating them is not to
expect any benefit in return. My only purpose is to seek the pleasure of
Allah." [Mazhari] .

It is reported in some narrations that this verse was revealed
in admiration of Sayyidna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

All he desires from his charity is "the pleasure of his Exalted Lord." Commentators state that the concluding five verses of this Surah refer to Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu who sacrificed a great deal of effort and wealth for the cause of Islam before and after the Hijrah (migration). When the Polytheists learnt about this, they taunted Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu by saying that he bought the freedom of Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu because he owed a favour to Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu Refuting this, Allah Ta'ala
revealed the verse: "He does not have to repay a favour to anyone (and spends for no reason ) except for the pleasure of his Exalted Lord." It has been reported that when Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu purchased Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu the latter asked him whether he had bought him to do his work. Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu replied "1 have purchased you to do Allah's work." Thereupon, Sayyidina Bilal radi Allahu anhu said "Then leave me to do Allah's work. Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu then set him free and he continued serving Allah's religion for the rest of his life.

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

As for the God-fearing person who spends his wealth in a good cause, without any selfish motive and only for the sake of his Rabb's pleasure, his Rabb will be pleased with him and will bless him with so much that he will be well pleased with his Rabb.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(He verily will be content) he will be given of reward and honour until he is pleased, i.e. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and his fellow believers'.

Tafseer Jalalain

and verily [soon] he shall [himself] be pleased, with the reward he will be given in Paradise. The verse applies [equally] to anyone who may do as he [Abū Bakr] did, may God be pleased with him, and such [a person] will thereby be removed far from the Fire and rewarded.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Whoever spends in Allah's way with pure and good intentions of pleasing Allah, and not for any personal worldly gains, will acquire the pleasure of Allah in the Hereafter by achieving the wonderful and eternal blessings of Paradise. It is confirmed that these verses were revealed about Sayyidna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu Therefore, this last verse of the SGrah is a great and splendid news and honour for him given in this very world by Allah.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

- This is an expression to denote Allah’s pleasure.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

In Surah Duha ( Surah 93, verse 5) that follows, Allah Ta'ala addresses the Holy Prophet saws saying, "Your Lord shall soon give you and you shall be pleased."These verses make it clear that Allah is pleased with the Holy Prophet saws and his close companion Sayyidina Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This verse can have two meanings and both are correct:
(1) "That Allah certainly will be well pleased with him;" and
(2) "that Allah soon will bless this man with so much that he will be happy."
