Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?(1)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Has the story reached thee of the overwhelming (Event)?(6096)
6096 Al Ghashiyah: the thing or event that overshadows or overwhelms, that covers over or makes people lose their senses. In 12:107, it is described as the "covering veil of the Wrath of Allah"; where seen . 1 7 90. The Day of Judgement is indicated, as the Event of overwhelming importance in which all our petty differences of this imperfect world are covered over and overwhelmed in a new world of perfect justice and truth.
On the faces of the wicked will appear the hard labour and consequent fatigue of the task they will have in battling against the fierce Fire which their own Deeds will have kindled.
The while they are given, to drink, of a boiling hot spring, .
The root meaning implies again the idea of humiliation. It is a plant, bitter and thorny, loathsome in smell and appearance, which will neither give fattening nourishment to the body nor in any way satisfy the burning pangs of hunger—a fit plant for Hell like Zaqqum (56:52; or 17:60, n. 2250).

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Has the news of the over shadowing event of resurrection reached you?
On that Day some faces shall be downcast,in hard labor, worn out, scorching in the blazing fire, given to drink from a boiling fountain.
Has the news of the over shadowing event of resurrection reached you?On that Day some faces shall be downcast,in hard labor, worn out, scorching in the blazing fire, given to drink from a boiling fountain. They shall have no food except bitter thorny fruit, which will neither provide nourishment nor satisfy hunger. While some faces on that Day shall be radiant, well pleased with their endeavors,in a lofty garden.Therein, they shall hear no loose talk.Therein, they shall have running springs.Therein, they shall be reclining on raised soft couches, with goblets placed before them;cushions arranged in orderand fine carpets richly spread.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

And from his narration on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that he said concerning the interpretation of Allah's saying (Hath there come unto you): '(Hath there come unto you) He says: it has not come unto you, O Muhammad, before but now it has; it is also said that this means: it has come unto you (tidings of the Overwhelming) the news of the coming of the Hour? It is also said the Overwhelming refers to the Fire overwhelming its dwellers.
(On that day) the Day of Judgement ((many) faces) the faces of the disbelievers and hypocrites (will be downcast) abased because of the chastisement,
(Toiling) dragged in the Fire, (weary) in tiredness and strife; it is also said this means: toiling in the life of the world, weary in the Hereafter, this refers to the Christian monks and anchorites, and it is also said it refers to the Kharijites.
(Scorched by burning fire) they enter the Fire whose heat is extreme.
(Drinking) in the Fire (from a boiling spring), .
(No food for them) in those abysmal pits (save bitter thorn fruit) the shabraq plant which grows in the roads of Mecca, which is eaten by camels when it is soft but when it is hard it becomes like the claws of cats

Tafseer Jalalain

Has there — [there has] indeed — come to you the tiding of the Enveloper?, the Resurrection, [so called] because it ‘envelops’ creatures with its terrors.
Some faces on that day — they [faces] are used to represent the individuals in both instances — will be humbled, abject,
toiling, weary, tired and exhausted from the chains and fetters,
roasting (read taslā or tuslā) in a scorching fire,
made to drink from a boiling spring, one of extremely hot temperatures.
They will have no food except cactus (darī‘) — a type of thorn plant which no animal grazes on because of its vileness —

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Has there come to you the description of the Overwhelming Event?
(Many faces on that day will be humbled, working hard, exhausted.. .88:3). On the Day of Judgement, there will be two separate groups of people, believers and unbelievers, and their faces will be different. This verse describes the faces of the unbelievers. They will be downcast. The word khEshi'ah from the root word khusha' means 'to humble, humiliate, cast down'. This is the meaning of casting oneself down before Allah in prayer. People who did not cast themselves down before Allah in this world, their faces on the Day of Judgement will be downcast with humiliation and disgrace.
The other conditions of the unbelievers are 'Emilah and nEsibah. The word 'Emilah from 'Emal means 'to work hard' and 'Gmil or 'Emilah in Arabic is used for 'a person who works continuously, so as to become completely tired'. The word nGibah is derived from nasab. This word also refers to 'one who toils unceasingly so as to become totally exhausted'. It seems that the latter two conditions of the unbelievers relate to this world, because Hereafter is not a realm in which one has to work to become so tired and exhausted. Therefore, Qurtubi and other commentators are of the view that the humbleness of their faces relates to the Hereafter, but their working hard and being exhausted refers to their work in this world. Given this interpretation, the sense is that many unbelievers exert
themselves in their false rituals, and work hard in their presumed acts of worship in the world, as for instance the Hindu Yogis and many Christian monks do. They endure many difficulties in the devotional acts of worship sincerely in order to seek the good pleasure of Allah, but being on wrong and idolatrous ways, they are not acceptable to, or rewarded by, Allah. Thus their faces show signs of exhaustion in this world; and in the Hereafter they will show signs of disgrace and humiliation. SayyidnZ Hasan Bag5 ;ll; hl -J reports that when Sayyidni 'Umar & went to Syria, a Christian monk came to him. He was an old man, and on account of his religious exercises and great endeavours, his face was exhausted, his body was dry and his dressing was miserable. When SayyidnZ 'Umar & looked at him, he began to weep. People asked him about the cause of his weeping. He replied: "I pity the condition of this old man. This poor soul worked so hard and showed such readiness to lay down his life to achieve a particular purpose (that is, to gain the pleasure of Allah) but, alas! He could not achieve it. Then he recited the following verse:
Many faces on that day will be humbled, 'working hard, exhausted. [88:2-31'
(...[the] scorching fire ... 88:4). The word harniyah literally means 'hot' and 'scorching'. Although this is the natural property of fire that needed no mention, yet the specific reference to this quality of the fire brings out the point that the fire of Hell cannot be compared to the fire of this world. The heat of the fire of this world, some time or the other, is reduced or ends. But the fire of Hell is everlasting and eternal. Its heat will neither reduce nor end.
(There will be no food for them except from a thorny plant ... 88:6) The only food available for the inmates of Hell would be dari'. In the world, this is a kind of thorny grass that spreads on the ground. No animal goes near it. It is foul-smelling, poisonous and thorny. [As interpreted by 'Ikrimah, MujZhid, and quoted by Qurtubf.
How will Grass or Tree Survive in Hell One may ask the question that the grass or trees are among things that burn in fire. How will they survive in Hellfire? The answer is that
the Supreme Creator Who cherished and sustained them in this world with water and air, has the power and ability to make the fire itself the nutrient of these trees, so that they may flourish.
Another question may be raised here. The Qur'Zn mentions several things as the food of the inmates of Hell. Here it refers to their food as dari'. On another occasion, it refers to zaqqiim, and on a third occasion it refers to ghislin. This verse restricts their food to dari', thus: 'There will be no food for them except from a thorny plant.. .88:6)
The answer is that the restriction in this verse is in contrast to a palatable food that may be fit for [human] consumption. Dart' is cited here as an example. The verse means that the inmates of Hell will not get any palatable food. They will get worst, most disgusting and loathsome food like dart'. Thus the purpose of mentioning dart' is not restriction. In fact, dart' includes zaqqiim and ghislin. Qurtubi says that it is possible there will be different levels in Hell, and on different levels there will be different kinds of food. On one level, there will be dart' and on another level, ghislin, and so on.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Has there come to you the description of the Overwhelming Event?

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Among the many names with which the Qur'an describes Judgment day, one is with the word "Al Ghashiya" ("an overwhelming thing" ). Judgment day is described as such because its hardship and severity will overwhelm every person and cause people's hearts to flutter with fear. Allah Ta'ala says, "Has the news of the overwhelming thing come to you?" Many commentators have interpreted the verse to mean: "The news of the overwhelming thing has certainly come to you " Although this is the ultimate meaning of the verse, it has been phrased as a question to attract the reader's attention.
Allah then continues to describe the Day of Judgment when He says, "Many faces on that day will be looking down." When these people are told to submit to Surah Ghashiya 88 : 1 -16 3»8. Allah in this world and to humble themselves before Allah's creation, they behave haughtily and refuse to do so. They will therefore be made to suffer disgrace on the Day of Judgment. Allah says about them in Surah Qalam, "Their gazes will be cast down and disgrace shall overcome them. Indeed they used to be summoned to prostrate when they were hale and healthy." [ Surah 68, verse 43]
Allah continues to say that among those to cast their gazes down in disgrace will be "He who suffered affliction and who endured many difficulties." "Ruhul Ma'ani" reports from Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas Hasan UP it that the affliction and difficulty that a doomed person will suffer on the Day of Judgment will be that he will be fettered with chains and a yoke. He will have to drag these along with him as he is made to climb the mountains of Hell.
Sayyidina Ikrima has mentioned that the verse refers to people who endure many difficulties in this world and who also exert themselves in spiritual exercises. However, because they refuse to accept Islam, all their efforts are wasted and they will be subjected to punishment in the Akhirah ( Hereafter). Concerning such a person, Allah says, "He shall enter the blazing fire where he will be given water to drink from boiling springs." The Arabic word "hamiya" (translated above as "blazing" ) actually refers to fire that is so hot that it cannot be heated any further. Sayyidina Abu Hurayra narrates that the Holy Prophet JJL-J AJLP ibi Jus once told His companions ( Sahabah) ^ that the fire of this world is merely a seventieth part of the fire of Hell. The Sahabah ^ said in astonishment, "But this fire is more than enough (to burn)!" The Holy ^ Prophet ( t-L- j UP ibt Ju* said, "Then too, the fire of Hell will be 69 grades more intense."
In addition to this, the people in Hell will be given boiling water to drink. Allah says in Surah Rahman, "They shall pass between it (Hell) and the boiling water." Allah says in Surah Kahf [ Surah 18, verse 29 ] ,"If they beseech help, they will be helped with water that is like the residue of burnt oil and will scorch their faces. A terrible drink indeed!" Allah speaks about it in Surah Muhammad as: "Can these people ever be like those who will abide forever in the Fire and are given boiling water to drink, which (e:< rs their innards to shreds?" [ Surah 47,verse 15].
After describing the drink of the people in Hell, Allah describes their food when He says, "The only food for the people of Hell shall be thorny trees." The author of "Mirqat" writes that "Dari" (translated above as "thorny trees" ) is actually the name of a thorny tree found in the Hijaz area. It is so foul and poisonous that even animals stay far from it. Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas ^ has mentioned that "Dari" is something in Hell which is more bitter than aloes, more foul-smelling than a carcass and hotter than fire. ["Ma'dlimut Tanzil" ]

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

"The over-shadowing calamity": the Resurrection which will overshadow the whole world. One should know that here the Hereafter as a whole is being depicted, which comprehends all the stages from the upsetting of the present system to the resurrection of all human beings and the dispensation of rewards and punishments from the Divine Court.
Some faces : some persons, so said for the face is the most conspicuous part of the human body by which man's personality is judged and which reflects the good or bad states through which man passes.
At some places in the Qur'an it has been stated that the dwellers of Hell will be given zaqqum to eat; at another place it has been said that they will have no other food but glhislin (washing from wounds), and here that "their only food will he thorny, dry grass." There is, in fact, no contradiction between these statements. This may as welt mean that Hell will have many different compartment in which different categories of the criminals will be lodged according to their crimes, and subjected to different punishments. This may also mean that if they try to avoid zaqqum they will be given ghislin, and if they try to avoid even that, they will only get thorny grass. In short, they would get nothing to suit their taste.
That is. they will be overjoyed to see the best results in the Hereafter of their endeavors and deeds in the world; they will be satisfied to see that they had, in fact, made a profitable bargain in that they had adopted a life of faith, virtue and piety, by sacrificing the desires of the flesh, undergone hardships in carrying out their obligations, endured afflictions in obeying the Divine Commands, incurred losses and suffered deprivation of benefits and pleasures while trying to avoid sins and acts of disobedience.
This thing has been mentioned at several places in the Qur'an as a major blessing of Paradise. (For explanation, see E.N. 38 of Maryam, E.N. 18 of At-Tur, E.N. 13 of Al-Wiiqi`ah, E.N. 21 of An-Naba).
That is, filled goblets already supplied so that they do not have to ask for them.

[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,(2)

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger) when one eats it.

Tafseer Jalalain

neither nourishing, nor availing against hunger.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(that will neither nourish, nor satisfy hunger ... 88:7). When the preceding verse was revealed in which it was stated that the inmates of Hell will get food like dart', some of the pagans of Makkah [mockingly] said that their camels eat dari' and yet they are fat and healthy. In response to their statement, the following verse of the Qur'Zn was revealed which means that they should not compare the dari' of this world with that of the Hereafter. The latter will neither provide nutrition, nor satisfy their hunger.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Describing the "Dari", Allah says that it "will neither nourish nor alleviate hunger."Sayyidina Abu Darda ^ narrates from the Holy Prophet fJL.j that the hunger that the people of Hell will suffer will be so extreme that it will equal the other forms of punishment in Hell. When they will plead for food, they will be given Dari to eat, which will neither provide nutrition nor satisfy their hunger. When they plead for food a second time, they will be given food that gets stuck in the throat". In an effort to get the food down their throats, they will recall that in this world they used to drink something in such a surah Ghashiya 88 : 17-20 389 Anwar-ul-Bayan (v. 10) situation. They will then plead for something to drink. Boiling water will be given to them suspended on iron hooks. The water will be so hot that when it is brought close to their faces, their faces will be scalded. When they drink it, it will tear their innards to bits. ["Mishkat" p. 504]

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "If they deny the possibility of the Hereafter, have they never looked around themselves and considered how the camels were created, how the heaven was raised high, how the mountains were firmly set and how the earth was spread out? When all these things could be created, and exist before
them in their finished form, why can the Resurrection not take place? Why cannot a new world come about, and why cannot .Hell and Heaven be possible'? Only a foolish and thoughtless person would think that the coming into existing of only those things which he has found existing on opening his eyes in the world, is possible. because they already exist. As for the things, which he has not yet observed and experienced, he should thoughtlessly pass the judgment that their coming into being is impossible. If he has any common sense, he should think as to how he things which already exist, came into being? How did the camel possessing precisely the same Characteristics as needed for the beast required by the desert dwellers of Arabia come into being'' How did the sky whose atmosphere is filled with air to breathe in, whose clouds bring rain, whose sun provides light and warmth in the day, whose moon and stars shine at night, come into being'' How did the earth spread out on which man lives and passes his life, whose products fulfill all his needs and requirements on whose springs and wells his life depends? How did the mountains rise up from the surface of the earth, which stand fixed with earth and stones of different colors and a variety of minerals in them? Has all this happened without the artistic skill of an AllPowerful, AI-Wise Designer No thinking and intelligent mind can answer this question in the negative. Unless it is stubborn and obstinate, it will have to acknowledge that each one of these things was impossible, had an Omnipotent; Wise Being not made it possible. And when an All-Powerful, Wise Being created these things, there is no reason why the Hereafter should be regarded as remote from reason and impossible."

Translation Sahih International

They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.(4)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Notice the parallelism in contrast, between the fate of the Wicked and that of the Righteous. In the one case there was humiliation in their faces; in the other, there is joy; where there was labour and weariness in warding off the Fire, there is instead a healthy Striving, which is itself pleasurable a Striving which is a pleasant consequence of the spiritual Endeavour in the earthly life, which may have brought trouble or persecution from without, but which brought inward peace and satisfaction.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Glad for their effort past) He says: they are pleased with the reward of their works

Tafseer Jalalain

pleased by their efforts, in the [life of the] world [expended] in obedience, [pleased] in the Hereafter upon seeing the reward thereof;

These fortunate believers 'shall be pleased with their efforts *. They will be pleased with the good deeds they exerted themselves to do in the world because they will see the fruits in the Hereafter. They will be enjoying themselves "in the lofty gardens of Heaven where they shall not hear futile talk." Heaven shall have nothing unpleasant. Neither will one see anything unpleasant, nor hear anything unpleasant. There will be no noise and shouting in Heaven, nor any talk that is futile or sinful. Allah says in Surah Waqi'ah,"They will not hear any noise there nor any foolish talk. Instead they will hear the resonant call of 'Peace 'Peace' ." [ Surah 56, verses 25,26

The most important point is their inward state of joy and satisfaction, mentioned in verses 8-9. Now are mentioned the outer things of bliss, the chief of which is the Garden. The Garden is in contrast to the Fire. Its chief beauty will be that they will hear there nothing unbecoming, or foolish, or vain. It will be a Garden on high, in all senses-fit for the best, highest, and noblest.

(And goblets) round goblets that do not have handles, ears or nooses (set at hand) in their dwellings.

Tafseer Jalalain

and goblets, vessels without handles, set, around the edges of the springs prepared for them to drink with,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(and goblets, well placed ... 88:14) The word akwEb is the plural of kiib and it refers to a 'goblet', a 'glass' or a cup for drinking water. It has been qualified by the adjective maudii'ah and it means 'well placed'. This signifies that the glasses or cups or containers will be set in their due places close to water. This description opens an important chapter in setting down some of the rules of correct behaviour in social situations. The drinking containers for water ought to be placed near the water in the designated place. he^ should not be misplaced so that the other members of the household will have to look for them when they wish to drink water. This situation is irritating. Other household items of daily use, such as cans, glasses, towels, and so on, should be arranged in their designated places, and after using them, they must be kept back in their respective places, so that the other members of the household do not face any difficulty in finding them out. All this is deducible from the word maudii'ah 'well placed', because Allah has arranged the goblets near the water for the comfort of the inmates of Paradise.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah continues,"In Heaven thereareelevated thrones, cups set in place, cushions arranged* in rows and carpets spread out." Surah Waqi'ah [Surah 56, verses 18 & 34] discusses the cups and thrones of Heaven whileSurah Dahar mentions,"Utensils ofsilver will be brought to themas well as glassesofcrystal, such crystal that is of silver, which thosefilling will fill byanappropriate measure." Within it is a flowing spring.(12)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

In case men neglect the Hereafter as of no account, they are asked to contemplate four things, which they can see in everyday life, and which are full of meaning, high design, and the goodness of Allah to man. The first mentioned is the domesticated animal, which for Arab countries is par excellence the Camel. What a wonderful structure has this Ship of the Desert? He can store water in his stomach for days. He can live on dry and thorny desert shrubs. His limbs are adapted to his life. He can carry men and goods. His flesh can be eaten. Camel's hair can be used in weaving. And withal, he is so gentle! Who can sing his praises enough?

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Do they not look at the camels, how they are created?

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

When the Prophet (pbuh) informed them of this, the disbelievers of Mecca said: "Bring us a sign to prove that Allah has sent you to us as a Messenger". Therefore Allah said: (Will they not regard the camels, how they are created) with their strength and power, carrying burdens that no one else can carry?

Tafseer Jalalain

Will they, the Meccan disbelievers, not consider, by way of reflection, the camels, how they are created?

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(So, do they not look at the camels how they are created ... 88:17) The QurAn first described the conditions of the Hereafter; and it then went on to depict the reward of the believers and the retribution of the unbelievers. Now it turns attention to rebuff the obdurate unbelievers' foolish denial of the Hereafter. They reject it on the ground that after death and decomposition of the body and bones it is inconceivable that they would be recomposed and resurrected. For their guidance, Allah invites their attention to reflect carefully on a few of His Signs. There are uncountable Signs of Allah in the universe. These verses refer to four of them specifically which suited the condition of the desert Arabs. They often travelled through the desert. In such a situation, all they saw were camels they travelled on. They mounted camels and covered long journeys. Above them was the sky and beneath them was the earth. All around them [left, right, front and back] they saw mountains. The Arabs are commanded to ponder over these four natural phenomena which make Allah's might manifest.
Among animals, the camel has certain peculiar characteristics that can be a reflection of Divine wisdom and power. It is the largest, most
robust and durable animal. Although elephant is a much larger animal than the camel, Allah has mentioned the camel rather than the elephant, because the Arabs knew camels and scarcely saw an elephant. Despite the fact that a camel is such a huge animal, a Bedouin Arab will not find it difficult to look after it even if he is poor. If he is unable to gather or afford food for it, it has to be let loose and will gather its own nutriment and live on leaves. It has a long neck to reach the tops of the high trees. The food of elephants and other animals work out expensive. In Arabian deserts, water is a scarce commodity. It is not available everywhere or anytime. Yet it can survive for about a week without water as Allah's Power has provided it with a small narrow-mouthed pouch in its paunch in which it stores up extra water [which it uses up gradually for seven to eight days]. Thus it is a superb draught beast. Nature has created it uniquely, so that it is perfectly adapted to survive the hazards of the harsh climate of the desert.
There is no need to set up a ladder to climb up the high animal. Allah has divided its legs into three levels. Each leg has two knees that it manoeuvres to sit down so that it becomes easier for riders to climb up and down. It is the chief beast of burden in deserts, and as such, it is able to carry large loads. It is most difficult to travel in daytime in Arabia because of scorching sunlight. Allah has made it possible for the camel to keep on travelling the whole night. Camels are so obedient that that even a little child can lead them along anywhere. Camels are very valuable to them in many other ways that teach man that Allah is Omnipotent and has consummate wisdom.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Camels were the most favourite item of wealth for the Arabs. They benefited from camels in numerous ways. They were familiar with the marvelous qualities of this animal how it travelled in scorching heat of the deserts of Arabia with no water to drink, and how it was subjugated to them, even though it was much more stronger than man in physique. If they gave due thought to these facts, it was not difficult for them to appreciate that the Creator of such an animal is so omnipotent and kind to them that He alone deserves worship, and no one else. It would also lead them to the fact that such an omnipotent and wise Creator has the power to resurrect them after death and call them to account for their deeds in this world.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Because the disbelievers were astonished to hear about the magnificent bounties of Heaven, Allah Ta'ala encourages them to think about certain natural phenomena which make Allah's might manifest. Allah Ta'ala encourages man to ponder about four things. Allah asks, "Have they not looked at the camel and seen how it was created?" The Arabs were used to camels and used them daily. They used camels in their fields, for transport and for domestic purposes. Camels are extremely robust and durable animals. They can subsist on a diet of thorny trees and can carry large loads. Camels can survive for up to a week without water and are so obedient that even a little child can lead them! along anywhere.Allah has also created camels in an extremely unique manner so that they are perfectly adapted to survive the hazards of the harsh desert climate. Although the elephant is a much larger animal than the camel, Allah has mentioned the camel instead of the elephant because the first addressees of the Qur'an (the Arabs) knew camels and scarcely saw an elephant.Camels were also very valuable to them.

The second thing they should consider is the noble blue vault high above them-with the sun and moon, the stars and planets, and other heavenly bodies. This scene is full of beauty and magnificence, design and order, plainness and mystery. And yet we receive our light and warmth from the sun, and what would our physical lives be without these influences that come from such enormous distances?

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

: From everyday utility and affection in the Camel, to the utility in grandeur in the heavens above us, we had two instances touching our individual as well as our social lives. In the third instance, in the Mountains we come to the utility of mankind generally in the services the Mountains perform in storing water, in moderating climate, and in various other ways which it is the business of Physical Geography to investigate and describe.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(So, do they not look at the camels how they are created ... 88:17) The Qur'Zn first described the conditions of the Hereafter; and it then went on to depict the reward of the believers and the retribution of the unbelievers.

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The fourth and last instance given is that of the Earth as a whole, the habitation of mankind in our present phase of life. The Earth is a globe, and yet how marvellously it seems to be spread out before us in plains, valleys, hills, deserts, seas, etc.! Can man, seeing these things, fail to see a Plan and Purpose in his life, or fail to turn to the great Creator before Whom he will have to give an account after this life is done?

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

And the earth, how it is spread out?

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And the earth, how it is spread) over water? All these are signs for them.

Tafseer Jalalain

And the earth, how it was laid out flat?, and thus infer from this the power of God, exalted be He, and His Oneness? The commencing with the [mention of] camels is because they are closer in contact with it [the earth] than any other [animal]. As for His words sutihat, ‘laid out flat’, this on a literal reading suggests that the earth is flat, which is the opinion of most of the scholars of the [revealed] Law, and not a sphere as astronomers (ahl al-hay’a) have it, even if this [latter] does not contradict any of the pillars of the Law.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

So keep on giving admonition, for you are an admonisher.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Remind them) admonish them, (for thou art but a remembrancer) you are but a warner by means of the Qur'an; it is also said that this means: you are only an admonisher by the Qur'an and through Allah.

Tafseer Jalalain

So remind, them of God’s graces and the proofs affirming His Oneness. For you are only an admonisher.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

YOU are not a taskmaster set up over them, .... 88:22) The Holy Prophet & is told that he is only a preacher, and as such he must keep on preaching. He should not worry beyond that. It is for Allah to call the unbelievers to Him to render account of their deeds and actions, and punish them accordingly.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

So, keep on preaching; you are only a preacher.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah reminds man about the advent of Judgment Day and warns the disbelievers of a dreadful punishment. Whoever does not believe will have to face the consequences of his deeds and no blame may be pinned on the Holy Prophet pJL-j UP iui However, because of his overwhelming concern for his Ummah, The Holy Prophet JJL-J used to become extremely grieved when people refused to accept Islam. Therefore, Allah said to him, "So give advice, for you are an advisor. You have not been appointed as a warder over them" i.e. your responsibility is only to preach the message and not to force people to believe. Whoever believed after the message reached him, shall be successful. "However, the one who turns away and disbelieves, Allah shall punish him most severely."He will be unable to escape Allah's punishment. Allah concludes the Surah by reminding man of his ultimate end when He says, "Verily they shall return to us. Thereafter, it is Our responsibility to take their reckoning."

Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?(17)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The Prophet of Allah is sent to teach and direct people on the way. He is not sent to force their will, or to punish them, except insofar as he may receive authority to do so. Punishment belongs to Allah alone. And Punishment is certain in the Hereafter, when true values will be restored.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Not a taskmaster over them.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Thou art not) O Muhammad (at all a warder over them) you are not imposed on them such that you force them to accept faith.

Tafseer Jalalain

You are not a taskmaster over them (a variant reading [for musaytir] has musaytir, that is to say, [not one who has been] given authority over them) — this was [revealed] before the command to struggle [against the disbelievers].

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

a (YOU are not a taskmaster set up over them, .... 88:22) holy Prophet & is told that he is only a preacher, and as such he must keep on preaching. He should not worry beyond that. It is for Allah to call the unbelievers to Him to render account of their deeds and actions, and punish them accordingly.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

You are not a taskmaster set up over them.

"However, the one who turns away and disbelieves, Allah shall punish him most severely."He willbe unable toescape Allah's punishment.
