Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?(1)
Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf
6096 Al Ghashiyah: the thing or event that overshadows or overwhelms, that covers over or makes people lose their senses. In 12:107, it is described as the "covering veil of the Wrath of Allah"; where seen . 1 7 90. The Day of Judgement is indicated, as the Event of overwhelming importance in which all our petty differences of this imperfect world are covered over and overwhelmed in a new world of perfect justice and truth.
On the faces of the wicked will appear the hard labour and consequent fatigue of the task they will have in battling against the fierce Fire which their own Deeds will have kindled.
The while they are given, to drink, of a boiling hot spring, .
The root meaning implies again the idea of humiliation. It is a plant, bitter and thorny, loathsome in smell and appearance, which will neither give fattening nourishment to the body nor in any way satisfy the burning pangs of hunger—a fit plant for Hell like Zaqqum (56:52; or 17:60, n. 2250).
Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam
On that Day some faces shall be downcast,in hard labor, worn out, scorching in the blazing fire, given to drink from a boiling fountain.
Has the news of the over shadowing event of resurrection reached you?On that Day some faces shall be downcast,in hard labor, worn out, scorching in the blazing fire, given to drink from a boiling fountain. They shall have no food except bitter thorny fruit, which will neither provide nourishment nor satisfy hunger. While some faces on that Day shall be radiant, well pleased with their endeavors,in a lofty garden.Therein, they shall hear no loose talk.Therein, they shall have running springs.Therein, they shall be reclining on raised soft couches, with goblets placed before them;cushions arranged in orderand fine carpets richly spread.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas
(On that day) the Day of Judgement ((many) faces) the faces of the disbelievers and hypocrites (will be downcast) abased because of the chastisement,
(Toiling) dragged in the Fire, (weary) in tiredness and strife; it is also said this means: toiling in the life of the world, weary in the Hereafter, this refers to the Christian monks and anchorites, and it is also said it refers to the Kharijites.
(Scorched by burning fire) they enter the Fire whose heat is extreme.
(Drinking) in the Fire (from a boiling spring), .
(No food for them) in those abysmal pits (save bitter thorn fruit) the shabraq plant which grows in the roads of Mecca, which is eaten by camels when it is soft but when it is hard it becomes like the claws of cats
Tafseer Jalalain
Some faces on that day — they [faces] are used to represent the individuals in both instances — will be humbled, abject,
toiling, weary, tired and exhausted from the chains and fetters,
roasting (read taslā or tuslā) in a scorching fire,
made to drink from a boiling spring, one of extremely hot temperatures.
They will have no food except cactus (darī‘) — a type of thorn plant which no animal grazes on because of its vileness —
Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran
(Many faces on that day will be humbled, working hard, exhausted.. .88:3). On the Day of Judgement, there will be two separate groups of people, believers and unbelievers, and their faces will be different. This verse describes the faces of the unbelievers. They will be downcast. The word khEshi'ah from the root word khusha' means 'to humble, humiliate, cast down'. This is the meaning of casting oneself down before Allah in prayer. People who did not cast themselves down before Allah in this world, their faces on the Day of Judgement will be downcast with humiliation and disgrace.
The other conditions of the unbelievers are 'Emilah and nEsibah. The word 'Emilah from 'Emal means 'to work hard' and 'Gmil or 'Emilah in Arabic is used for 'a person who works continuously, so as to become completely tired'. The word nGibah is derived from nasab. This word also refers to 'one who toils unceasingly so as to become totally exhausted'. It seems that the latter two conditions of the unbelievers relate to this world, because Hereafter is not a realm in which one has to work to become so tired and exhausted. Therefore, Qurtubi and other commentators are of the view that the humbleness of their faces relates to the Hereafter, but their working hard and being exhausted refers to their work in this world. Given this interpretation, the sense is that many unbelievers exert
themselves in their false rituals, and work hard in their presumed acts of worship in the world, as for instance the Hindu Yogis and many Christian monks do. They endure many difficulties in the devotional acts of worship sincerely in order to seek the good pleasure of Allah, but being on wrong and idolatrous ways, they are not acceptable to, or rewarded by, Allah. Thus their faces show signs of exhaustion in this world; and in the Hereafter they will show signs of disgrace and humiliation. SayyidnZ Hasan Bag5 ;ll; hl -J reports that when Sayyidni 'Umar & went to Syria, a Christian monk came to him. He was an old man, and on account of his religious exercises and great endeavours, his face was exhausted, his body was dry and his dressing was miserable. When SayyidnZ 'Umar & looked at him, he began to weep. People asked him about the cause of his weeping. He replied: "I pity the condition of this old man. This poor soul worked so hard and showed such readiness to lay down his life to achieve a particular purpose (that is, to gain the pleasure of Allah) but, alas! He could not achieve it. Then he recited the following verse:
Many faces on that day will be humbled, 'working hard, exhausted. [88:2-31'
(...[the] scorching fire ... 88:4). The word harniyah literally means 'hot' and 'scorching'. Although this is the natural property of fire that needed no mention, yet the specific reference to this quality of the fire brings out the point that the fire of Hell cannot be compared to the fire of this world. The heat of the fire of this world, some time or the other, is reduced or ends. But the fire of Hell is everlasting and eternal. Its heat will neither reduce nor end.
(There will be no food for them except from a thorny plant ... 88:6) The only food available for the inmates of Hell would be dari'. In the world, this is a kind of thorny grass that spreads on the ground. No animal goes near it. It is foul-smelling, poisonous and thorny. [As interpreted by 'Ikrimah, MujZhid, and quoted by Qurtubf.
How will Grass or Tree Survive in Hell One may ask the question that the grass or trees are among things that burn in fire. How will they survive in Hellfire? The answer is that
the Supreme Creator Who cherished and sustained them in this world with water and air, has the power and ability to make the fire itself the nutrient of these trees, so that they may flourish.
Another question may be raised here. The Qur'Zn mentions several things as the food of the inmates of Hell. Here it refers to their food as dari'. On another occasion, it refers to zaqqiim, and on a third occasion it refers to ghislin. This verse restricts their food to dari', thus: 'There will be no food for them except from a thorny plant.. .88:6)
The answer is that the restriction in this verse is in contrast to a palatable food that may be fit for [human] consumption. Dart' is cited here as an example. The verse means that the inmates of Hell will not get any palatable food. They will get worst, most disgusting and loathsome food like dart'. Thus the purpose of mentioning dart' is not restriction. In fact, dart' includes zaqqiim and ghislin. Qurtubi says that it is possible there will be different levels in Hell, and on different levels there will be different kinds of food. On one level, there will be dart' and on another level, ghislin, and so on.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi
Allah then continues to describe the Day of Judgment when He says, "Many faces on that day will be looking down." When these people are told to submit to Surah Ghashiya 88 : 1 -16 3»8. Allah in this world and to humble themselves before Allah's creation, they behave haughtily and refuse to do so. They will therefore be made to suffer disgrace on the Day of Judgment. Allah says about them in Surah Qalam, "Their gazes will be cast down and disgrace shall overcome them. Indeed they used to be summoned to prostrate when they were hale and healthy." [ Surah 68, verse 43]
Allah continues to say that among those to cast their gazes down in disgrace will be "He who suffered affliction and who endured many difficulties." "Ruhul Ma'ani" reports from Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas Hasan UP it that the affliction and difficulty that a doomed person will suffer on the Day of Judgment will be that he will be fettered with chains and a yoke. He will have to drag these along with him as he is made to climb the mountains of Hell.
Sayyidina Ikrima has mentioned that the verse refers to people who endure many difficulties in this world and who also exert themselves in spiritual exercises. However, because they refuse to accept Islam, all their efforts are wasted and they will be subjected to punishment in the Akhirah ( Hereafter). Concerning such a person, Allah says, "He shall enter the blazing fire where he will be given water to drink from boiling springs." The Arabic word "hamiya" (translated above as "blazing" ) actually refers to fire that is so hot that it cannot be heated any further. Sayyidina Abu Hurayra narrates that the Holy Prophet JJL-J AJLP ibi Jus once told His companions ( Sahabah) ^ that the fire of this world is merely a seventieth part of the fire of Hell. The Sahabah ^ said in astonishment, "But this fire is more than enough (to burn)!" The Holy ^ Prophet ( t-L- j UP ibt Ju* said, "Then too, the fire of Hell will be 69 grades more intense."
In addition to this, the people in Hell will be given boiling water to drink. Allah says in Surah Rahman, "They shall pass between it (Hell) and the boiling water." Allah says in Surah Kahf [ Surah 18, verse 29 ] ,"If they beseech help, they will be helped with water that is like the residue of burnt oil and will scorch their faces. A terrible drink indeed!" Allah speaks about it in Surah Muhammad as: "Can these people ever be like those who will abide forever in the Fire and are given boiling water to drink, which (e:< rs their innards to shreds?" [ Surah 47,verse 15].
After describing the drink of the people in Hell, Allah describes their food when He says, "The only food for the people of Hell shall be thorny trees." The author of "Mirqat" writes that "Dari" (translated above as "thorny trees" ) is actually the name of a thorny tree found in the Hijaz area. It is so foul and poisonous that even animals stay far from it. Sayyidina Abdullah bin Abbas ^ has mentioned that "Dari" is something in Hell which is more bitter than aloes, more foul-smelling than a carcass and hotter than fire. ["Ma'dlimut Tanzil" ]
Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran
Some faces : some persons, so said for the face is the most conspicuous part of the human body by which man's personality is judged and which reflects the good or bad states through which man passes.
At some places in the Qur'an it has been stated that the dwellers of Hell will be given zaqqum to eat; at another place it has been said that they will have no other food but glhislin (washing from wounds), and here that "their only food will he thorny, dry grass." There is, in fact, no contradiction between these statements. This may as welt mean that Hell will have many different compartment in which different categories of the criminals will be lodged according to their crimes, and subjected to different punishments. This may also mean that if they try to avoid zaqqum they will be given ghislin, and if they try to avoid even that, they will only get thorny grass. In short, they would get nothing to suit their taste.
That is. they will be overjoyed to see the best results in the Hereafter of their endeavors and deeds in the world; they will be satisfied to see that they had, in fact, made a profitable bargain in that they had adopted a life of faith, virtue and piety, by sacrificing the desires of the flesh, undergone hardships in carrying out their obligations, endured afflictions in obeying the Divine Commands, incurred losses and suffered deprivation of benefits and pleasures while trying to avoid sins and acts of disobedience.
This thing has been mentioned at several places in the Qur'an as a major blessing of Paradise. (For explanation, see E.N. 38 of Maryam, E.N. 18 of At-Tur, E.N. 13 of Al-Wiiqi`ah, E.N. 21 of An-Naba).
That is, filled goblets already supplied so that they do not have to ask for them.
