Translation Sahih International

And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -(2)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

An inhabitant, a man with lawful rights, a man freed from such obligations as would attach to a stranger to the city, a freeman in a wider sense than the technical sense to which the word is restricted in modern usage. The Prophet should have been honoured in his native city. He was actually being persecuted. He should have been loved, as a parent loves a child. Actually his life was being sought, and those who believed in him were under a ban. But time was to show that he was to come triumphant to his native city after having made Madihah sacred by his life and work.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

and of the world in relation to man and tell that Allah has shown man, both, the Highway of good and the Highway of evil.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And thou art an indweller of this city)
and it is also said that this means: Allah has made lawful for you in this city that which he did not make lawful to anyone before or after you; and it is also said that this means: you are excused regarding that which you do in this city.

Tafseer Jalalain

and you, O Muhammad (s), have free disposal of, sanction for, this land, in that you will be given permission to fight in it — and indeed God fulfilled this promise to him on the day of the Conquest [of Mecca] (thus this is a parenthetical statement intervening between that by which the oath has been sworn and that which is a supplement thereto).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The word hillun bears two possibilities: It could be derived from huliil which signifies to reside in or to descend on some place. In this sense, hillun signifies 'a dweller or resident' and the verse purports to say that the city of Makkah itself is sacred, and since Holy Prophet Muhammad is the inhabitant of this city, it adds to the sanctity, honour and glory of the place. Thus, on account of the Holy Prophet's residing in that city its honour and sanctity has been enhanced and augmented. The second possibility is that it is derived from hillatun Siirah which means 'the thing the doing of which is lawful'. From this point of view, hillun could signify one of two things: One that the pagans of Makkah consider it lawful to do the Holy Prophet any harm, even to kill him, in this City of Makkah which is so sacred that the doing of harm to a living creature in its precincts, not to say of killing it or hunting it, is strictly forbidden even according to their own belief system . Secondly, this may be a prophecy that the city of Makkah is going to be made lawful for the Holy Prophet in the sense that fighting in it will be allowed for him for a specified time, and He will alight in this City of Makkah, as it happened on the occasion of the Conquest of Makkah. On this occasion, all the injunctions and ordinances of the haram were suspended for one day, and it was made lawful to kill the disbelievers. Mazhari cites three possible meanings, and says that all three of them are equally possible.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

This means that although it is not allowed for the Holy Prophet to fight his enemies at the moment, a time is coming when he will be permitted to fight them right here in this city. This happened at the time of conquest of Makkah when he was allowed to fight for one day, even though he did not avail of this permission, and Makkah was conquered without bloodshed. Another possible translation of this verse adopted by some exegates is the following: ‘and (O Prophet,) you are taken in this city as a person whose killing is allowed.’ According to this interpretation, it would mean that although the pagans of Makkah do not allow killing even an animal in this city, they are planning to kill the Holy Prophet here. Given these interpretations, the verse consoles the Holy Prophet that despite their plans, the ultimate success is destined for him, and whatever he is suffering at the moment is transitory, because Allah has created man to struggle hard in this world. A third interpretation is very simple. It takes the word hill to mean ‘dwelling’. The translation in this case would be as follows: \swear by the city (of Makkah), while (O Prophet,) you are dwelling in this city’. Swearing by Makkah is to denote its holiness

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah tells the Holy Prophet "and you shall be free (of restrictions) in this city (Makkah)." This verse foretold that a time will come when the Holy Prophet would enter Makkah as a conqueror and that Allah would free him from the restrictions of the city by permitting him to execute certain people. Consequently, when the Holy Prophet marched with His Companions ( the Sahabah) into Makkah during the 8th year after Hijrah, amnesty was granted to a large number of polytheists who had perpetrated atrocities against the Muslims. However, there were some people whom the prophet's companions (Sahabah) were commanded to execute. The Holy Prophet then said, Surah Balad 90 : 1-10 400 Anwar-ul-Bayan "Verily, Allah made Makkah a Haram (sacred, i.e. a place where no killing should take place) the day He created the heavens and the earth. None was given freedom ( to execute) before me and none shall ever have this freedom after me. This freedom was granted to me for only a portion of the day. It will now remain sacred by the decree of Allah until Judgment Day i.e. killing will not be permitted in Makkah until Judgment Day." ["Mishkat" p. 237 ]

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Three meanings of the words in the Text have been given by the commentators: (1) "That you are a resident of this city and your residence here has further enhanced the glory of this city"; (2) "that although this city is a sanctuary; a time will come when for some time it will become lawful for you to fight and kill the enemies of the true Faith here; and, (3) "that in this city where even killing of animals and cutting of trees is forbidden for the people of Arabia, and where everyone is living in perfect peace, you, O Prophet, have no peace, and persecuting you and devising plans to kill you has been made lawful." Although the words are comprehensive enough to cover all the three meanings, yet when the theme that follows is considered, one feels that the first two meanings bear no relevance to it, and only the third meaning seems to be correct.

Translation Sahih International

And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],(3)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

A parent loves a child ordinarily: the father is proud and the mother, in spite of her birth pains, experiences supreme joy when the child is born. But in abnormal circumstances there may be misunderstandings, even hatred between parent and child. So Makkah cast out her most glorious son, but it was only for a time. Makkah was sound at heart; only her power had been usurped by an ignorant autocracy which passed away, and Makkah was to receive back her glory at the hands of the son whom she had rejected but whom she welcomed back later. And Makkah retains for all time her sacred character as the centre of Islam.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

and I swear by your father (Adam) and the children he begot (mankind).

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And the begetter and that which he begat) the begetter is Adam and that which his sons begat; and it is also said this means: the begetter refers to the person who can have children, whether this person is a man or a woman, while that which he begat refers to the men or women who cannot have children; Allah swore by all these

Tafseer Jalalain

And [by] the begetter, that is, Adam, and that which he begat, that is, his descendants (mā, ‘that which’, [actually] means man, ‘whom’).

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(and by the father and that which he begot, ... 90:3) The word walid refers to Holy Prophet 'Adam , the father of mankind, and the phrase 'that which he begot' refers to his children from the inception of the world to the end of the world. Thus this phrase swears an oath by Holy Prophet 'Adam and all his children.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

and I swear by your father (Adam) and the children he begot (mankind).

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

(I swear) by the father and offspring!

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

As the words "father and children he begot" have been used indefinitely, and this is followed by the mention of man, father could only imply Adam (peace be on him) and children the human beings who existed in the world, exist today and will exist in the future.

Translation Sahih International

We have certainly created man into hardship.(4)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Cf. "Man is born unto troubles as the sparks fly upward" (Job, 5:7); "For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief (Ecclesiastes, 2:23). Man's life is full of sorrow and vexation; but our text has a different shade of meaning: man is born to strive and struggle; and if he suffers from hardships, he must exercise patience, for Allah will make his way smooth for him (65:7; 94:5-6). On

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Its theme is to explain the true position of man in the world and of the world in relation to man and tell that Allah has shown man, both, the Highway of good and the Highway of evil. Allah has also provided for him the means to judge, see and follow them. Now it rests upon man's own effort and judgement whether he chooses the path of virtue and reaches felicity or adopts the path of evil and meets with doom.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(We verily have created man) i.e. Kildah Ibn Usayd (in an atmosphere) in a erect form; it is also said that this means: in strife with the matter of the life of this world and of the Hereafter; and it is also said this means: with strength and force.

Tafseer Jalalain

We certainly created man (al-insān: the generic noun) in travail, in [a state of] toil and hardship, struggling with the tribulations of this world and the calamities of the Hereafter.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Indeed We have created man [to live] in hard struggle ... (90:4)
The word kabad means 'labour, 'toil' or 'difficulty'. The verse purports to say that man's life is a series of hard and toilsome works. Ibn 'Abbas & says: 'Man was conceived and held in his mother's womb. The mother bore the pangs of birth. The hardship of sucking the mother's milk and the difficulty of weaning. This is followed by seeking livelihood and other necessities of life with hardship. Then he endures hardships and long-suffering of old age, death, grave, resurrection, accountability of deeds before Allah, reward and punishment.' These difficulties and hardships are not confined to man. Other animals too share them. Man has particularly been mentioned in this connection because of his intelligence. The more the power of a creature's intelligence, the higher the degree of his legal obligation. Lastly, the greatest difficulty and hardship would be borne at resurrection and life-after-death, when we will be required to give an account of the deeds we might have done throughout our life. Other species of animals will not be required to do this. Some scholars say that no creation suffers as much difficulties or hardships as human beings, despite the fact that his body is smaller and weaker than most other animals. Man's
brainpower, however, is most powerful. Therefore, he has been specifically mentioned. Swearing an oath by Makkah, 'Kdam and his children, Allah has made it plain that man has been created in difficulties and to endure hardships. This is a proof that man did not come into existence on his own but his Creator is an All-Powerful Being who has, in His wisdom, created every species of creation with specific predisposition and capacity of actions. If man had any part in his own creation, he would never have allowed such difficulties and hardships for himself. [Qurtubi] Absolute Comfort, without Hardship, Is not Possible in the World: Man Must be Prepared to Endure Hardships. The oath and its subject makes plain to man that his desire to live peacefully and comfortably in this world, without enduring any hardship, is a silly idea and false notion, which is not possible to happen. Therefore, it is necessary for difficulty, hardship, distress and affliction to befall every person. Since they are bound to befall, a wise person should be in readiness to work hard for something that may help him for an eternal life. The only factor that will help him for this is faith and obedience to

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

The verse indicates that it is not possible for anyone in this world that he lives in comforts and luxuries at all times. Man is created to struggle hard in this world, not only for his livelihood, but also to gain the comforts of the Hereafter. That is why he should face all difficulties with patience. Since the Muslims in Makkah were suffering severe hardships at the hands of their enemies this verse reminded them of the true nature of the worldly life,so that they might endure them with patience.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah says, "We have certainly created man in toil." Man is the best of Allah's creation. Together with granting him honour, Allah also tests man with many trials and hardships. Together with tending to his many needs and necessities, man faces many other difficulties in his life. Man has to ensure that he makes an effort to feed and clothe himself and his family. In addition to this, illnesses and calamities afflict him. Despite this, he has to continue earning a living and tending to his many responsibilities. To feed himself, man has to till the land, plant the seeds and still ensure that the fields receive sufficient water and care. After caring for his crops and guarding them against pest hence, the crops are finally ready for harvesting. However, man's work does not end here. He still has to harvest the crop, thresh it (if it is a grain), store it and grind it into flour. Thereafter the flour has to be prepared and baked into bread before he can eat it. After eating the food, the waste has to be excreted. If he is suffering from constipation, he will have to seek medical assistance so that his stomach works. On the other hand, if he is suffering from diarrhoea, he will also need to have it treated. If a person does not marry, he will have difficulty. If he does marry, he will have to exert himself to provide for his wife and children. He will have to worry about raising the children properly and he will have to share all their pains and experiences. The above are just as few of the myriad of difficulties that a person faces in his life. If one ponders about it, one will be able to enumerate many more. Besides these difficulties, there are numerous tasks that the Shari'ah demands from a person. One has to forsake one's sleep and occupation for Salah, endure hunger and thirst to fast, give a portion of one's wealth in Zakat and spend one's wealth to perform Hajj. These are responsibilities that man is entrusted with and from which the other creation are exempt. If one fulfils all these responsibilities and endures all the difficulties of life to please Allah, one will be greatly rewarded in the Hereafter. However, the person who does all of this for worldly motives will have no share of rewards in the Hereafter. In addition to this, if one commits sins, one will have to face punishment there. When afflicted with difficulties, man's attitude should be that everything is from Allah. He should continue being obedient to Allah and he should turn to Allah all the time. This is accomplished by making supplication to Allah and engaging in acts of Ibadah (worship).

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

This is that for which the oaths as mentioned above have been sworn. Man's being created in toil means that man in this world has not been created to enjoy himself and live a life of ease and comfort, but the world for him is a place of enduring and undergoing toil, labor and hardship, and no man can be immune from this. The city of Makkah is a witness that a servant of Allah toiled and struggled hard, then only did it become a city and the center of Arabia. In this city of Makkah the condition of Muhammad (upon whom be Allah's peace) is a witness that he is enduring every kind of hardship for the sake of a mission; so much so that there is full peace here for the wild animals but no peace for him. Then, every man's survival, from the tithe he is conceived in the mother's womb till the last breath of life, is a witness that he has to pass through trouble, toil, labor, dangers and hardships at every step. The most fortunate of us is also exposed to grave dangers of death before birth or of elimination by abortion while in the mother's womb. At birth he is only a hair-breadth away from death. After birth he is so helpless that had there not been somebody to look after him, he would perish uncared for and unnoticed. When he became able to walk he stumbled at every step. Froth childhood to youth and old age he had to pass through such physical changes that if any change had taken a wrong turn, his very life would have been at stake. Even if he is a king or a dictator, he at no time enjoys internal peace from the tear that a rebellion might arise against him somewhere. Even if he is a conqueror he is never at peace from the danger that one of his generals might rise in revolt against him Even if he is a Korah of his time, he is ever anxious to increase his wealth and to safeguard it. Thus, there is no one who may he enjoying perfect peace freely and without hesitation, for man indeed has been created into a life of toil and trouble.

Section 01

Translation Sahih International

Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?(5)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

If a man has wealth, influence, or power, he should not behave as if it is to last forever, or as if he has no responsibility for his acts and can do what he likes. All his gifts and advantages are given to him for trial. Allah, Who bestowed them on him, can take them away, and will do so if man fails in his trial.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

After this, man’s misunderstanding that he is all in all in this world and that there is no superior power to watch what he does and to call him to account, has been refuted.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(Thinketh he) does the disbelieving man think (that) because of his strength and force (none hath power over him?) i.e. Allah cannot seize and punish him.

Tafseer Jalalain

Does he suppose, does the strong man of Quraysh, namely, Abū’l-Ashadd b. Kalada, presume, on account of
his strength, that (an: softened in place of the hardened form, its subject omitted, that is to say, annahu) no
one will have power over him? Yet God has power over him.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Then, after describing a few of the ignorant dis believer's qualities, the following verse says about an unbeliever (Does he think
that no one has seen him? ... 90:7) that is, his evil deeds. He should realise
that his Creator watches every action of his.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Does he think that no one has power over him?

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

However, the opposite usually takes place.
Instead of turning to Allah, people violate His commands and seem to have no fear of reckoning. Referring to this attitude, Allah asks, "Does man think that none shall ever have power over him?" Man appears to think that he is free to do as he pleases without fearing that he is being watched and that Allah has the power to take him to task for his deeds. He fails to realise that Allah gave him the power. he wields and that Allah has power over everything.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is: Is man, who is ever exposed to such hazards, involved in the delusion that he can do what he likes, and there is no superior power to seize and suppress him? The fact, however, is that even before the occurrence of the Hereafter in this world itself, he sees that his destiny every moment is being ruled by some other Being against Whose decrees all his plans and designs prove ineffective. A single jolt of the earthquake, a blast of wind, a flood in the river and a sea-storm are enough to show how weak and feeble man is against the Divine forces. A sudden accident can reduce a strong and robust person to a cripple; one turn of the fortune deposes a mighty sovereign froth the position of authority. When the fortunes of the nations, which have climbed to the very apex of glory and prosperity, change, they are humiliated and disgraced even in the world where do one could dare look them in the face. How has then this man been deluded into thinking that no one else can have power over him ?

He says, I have spent wealth in abundance.(6)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The man who feels no responsibility and thinks that he can do what he likes in life forgets his responsibility to Allah. He boasts of his wealth and scatters it about, thinking that he can thus purchase the support of the world For a time he may. But a rude awakening must come soon. for he bases his hopes on unsustainable things. Or if he spends his substance on self-indulgence. he is weakening himself and putting himself in snares that must destroy him.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

These are the boastful claims used to be laid by the rich people to show off their wealth with no intention to do good, but as a source of pride and haughtiness. Such people bragged in this manner as if the entire universe belonged to them, and no one could touch them with evil.

In this manner, man becomes haughty and extravagant and even has the audacity to boast, "l have wasted wealth in abundance." He does not realise that he spent his wealth in avenues that are displeasing to Allah. It appears as if he thinks that none is watching him. Therefore, Allah asks, "Does he think that none sees him?" Allah is watching man all the time. The Tafsir "Jalalayn" reveals that one of the disbelievers spent a great amount of wealth to oppose Islam and boasted about this saying, " I have wasted wealth in abundance." Allah warns such people that He is ever Watchful over them and He will take them to task for the wrong they do.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

Literally: "I have destroyed heaps of wealth", i.e. squandered and wasted it. These words show how proud the speaker was of his wealth. The heaps of wealth that he spent was so insignificant as against his total wealth that he did not mind squandering it carelessly. And to what purpose did he squander it'? Not for a genuine, good cause as becomes evident from the following verses, but for display of his wealth and expression of his pride and glory. Bestowing rich awards on , poetic admirers, inviting and feeding hundreds of thousands of people on marriage and death ceremonies, gambling away heaps of wealth, attending festivals with large entourages, trying to excel others in display of glory and grandeur, having heaps of food cooked on ceremonial occasions and throwing invitations to all and sundry to come and eat, or arranging and supplying running meals at the residence so as to impress the people around with one's generosity and large heartedness; such were the expenditures of ostentation, which in the days of ignorance were regarded as a symbol of man's munificence and magnanmity, and a sign of his greatness. For these they were praised and admired; on these their Praises were sung; and on account of these they prided themselves against the less fortunate.

Have We not made for him two eyes?(8)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The eyes give us the faculty of seeing. and may be taken in both the literal and the metaphorical sense.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Have We not given him two eyes to observe?

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Allah then mentioned the blessings He bestowed upon him, saying: (Did We not assign unto him two eyes) with which he sees

Tafseer Jalalain

Have We not given (an interrogative meant as an affirmative, in other words, ‘We have [certainly] given’) him two eyes,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The current verse mentions a few of the organs and abilities that Allah has endowed him with. If he reflects carefully on these endowments, he will appreciate His infinite wisdom and power within himself. He has a pair of eyes. The optic nerves and tissues are rather delicate. They send nervous impulses to the brain when stimulated by light rays from external objects. The structure of the eye itself is most delicate. Each eye consists of a hollow, spherical capsule [eyeball], made up of several layers and structures. It is set into a socket in the skull, and is protected by eyelids and eyelashes, and eyebrows. It works like an automatic machine. When a harmful object is seen coming from the front, the eyelids close on their own. The eyelashes block the dust from getting into the eyes. The eyebrows help keep things away from falling into the eyes directly from top. The facial bones, especially the orbit [eye socket and the cheek bones], protect the eye, if one were to fall on one's face or something were to fall on the face.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Did We not make for him two eyes,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah has given man his limbs and other physical qualities, all of which are invaluable aids for him and they also add to his beauty. Man ought to express gratitude for all of this by using these limbs to carry out deeds pleasing to Allah. In this manner, he will be securing his success in the Akhirah ( Hereafter).

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "Have We not given him the means of obtaining knowledge and wisdom '?" "Two eyes" does not imply the eyes of the cow and buffalo, but human eyes, which if used intelligently can help man see all around himself those signs which lead to the reality and distinguish the right from the wrongs

And a tongue and two lips?(9)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The eyes gives us the faculty of seeing. and may be taken in both the literal and the metaphorical sense. In the same way the tongue gives us the faculty of tasting in both senses. Along with the lips, it also enables us to speak, to ask for information and seek guidance, and to celebrate the praises of Allah .

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

One tongue to talk and two lips to control it?

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And a tongue) with which he speaks (and two lips) which he can join together or separate,

Tafseer Jalalain

and a tongue, and two lips,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

The second gift that man is endowed with is the 'tongue'. This organ - the articulator - is the most amazing and important creation. It is the long piece of flesh fixed to the bottom of the mouth that can represent thoughts of the heart, the automatic and mysterious machine. The heart works in an amazing way. A thought occurs in the heart, the brain interprets it, and prepares appropriate topic and words. The words are uttered by the tongue. Such a complex task is performed so swiftly that the listener does not even realise how many systems have worked before the distinguishable sounds, letters and words were uttered. Nature has equipped man with two lips that play an important role in articulating the different sounds, letters and words. Nature has made the tongue such a swift-working articulator that within half a minute it may utter a word which may take him out from Hell and admit him into Paradise, as the word of faith, or may endear him to his enemy in the world, as by seeking forgiveness of his shortcomings. The same tongue within the same short span of time may take him to Hell, as by uttering the word of disbelief, or may make him his biggest enemy who was previously his closest friend, as by using obscene language against him. The tongue has many benefits as well as many ways of destruction. It is a double-edged sword that can operate against an enemy, and it can also cut one's own throat. Therefore, Allah has kept it covered within the case of two lips. Probably, this is the reason why the pair of lips is mentioned. The Creator Who has endowed man with tongue has equipped him with a pair of lips in order to protect it. Therefore, he should be careful in its use. He should not unsheathe it unnecessarily. Allah has equipped him with a pair of eyes, a pair of lips and a tongue, and has equipped him with the ability to distinguish good from evil and right from wrong, thus: then inspired it with its [instinct of] evil and piety [91:8]' Thus in the first instance man receives guidance from his own conscience. This is supported Ey the guidance of the Holy Prophets and celestial books that clarify it.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

and one tongue and two lips,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah continues, "Have We not given him a tongue, two lips " Allah has given man his limbs and other physical qualities, all of which are invaluable aids for him and they also add to his beauty. Man ought to express gratitude for all of this by using these limbs to carry out deeds pleasing to Allah. In this manner, he will be securing his success in the Akhirah ( Hereafter).

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

"The tongue and lips" do not merely imply the instruments of speech but the rational wind behind these instruments which performs the functions of thinking and understanding and then uses them for expressing its ideas, motives and designs.

Translation Sahih International

And have shown him the two ways?(10)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

The two highways of life are: (1) the Steep and difficult part of virtue. which is further described in the verses following. and (2) the easy path of vice and the rejection of Allah, referred to in verses 19-20 below. Allah has given us not only the faculties implied in the eyes, the tongue. and the lips. but has also given us the judgment by which we can choose our way; and he has sent us Teachers and Guides, with Revelation, to show us the right and difficult way.

Tafseer Dr.

After this, man’s misunderstanding that he is all in all in this world and that there is no superior power to watch what he does and to call him to account, has been refuted. The Highway which leads to moral depravity is easy and pleasing to the self and the Highway which leads to moral heights is steep like an uphill road for which man has to exercise self-restraint.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?) And We showed him the way of goodness and the way of evil; and it is also that this means: the way to the two breasts.

Tafseer Jalalain

and guided him to the two paths?, [did We not] point out to him the path of good and that of evil?

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

He has been shown the two ways of good and evil; and of right and wrong so that he may choose between the two. Obviously, he should choose the good way. In his make-up, there exists the ability to take either way. All these bounties have not motivated man to attempt the steep course. Then the heedless man is warned that he should reflect on the clear proofs and arguments pertaining to Allah's Omnipotence, pertaining to the Day of Judgement, life after death and Reckoning, and believe in these articles of faith. This faith requires that man should be a source of benefit and comfort to others; he should abstain from hurting them; he should believe in Allah; he should amend his own conduct and think of reforming others also, so that, on the Day of Judgement, he may be among the people of the right hand, the inmates of Paradise, enjoying a happy recompense for what he has done in this life. The unfortunate ones who persistently denied the Truth shall be encircled by the Hell-fire..

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

and showed him the two ways?

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah has shown man the way to attain salvation as well as the path to destruction. The choice is man's. The intelligent man will opt for the path of salvation by fulfilling Allah's commands and the teachings of the Prophets. He will accept Allah's authority, invest all he has for the Hereafter and ensure that he treats Allah's creation well.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "We have not left him alone after granting him the faculties of thinking and reasoning so that he may have to search out his own way, but We have also guided him and opened up before him both the highways of good and evil, virtue and vice, so that he may consider them seriously and choose and adopt one or the other way on his own responsibility. This same subject has been expressed in Surah Ad-Dahr: 2-3, thus: "Indeed We created man from a mixed sperm-drop, to try him, and so We made him capable of hearing and seeing. We showed him the way, whether to be grateful or disbelieving. "

But he has not broken through the difficult pass.(11)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

In spite of the faculties with which Allah has endowed man and the guidance which he has given him , man has been remiss. By no means has he been eager to follow the steep and difficult path which is for his own spiritual good . Cf. Mat. vii . 14 : "Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth Unto live, and few there be that find it".

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Yet, he has not attempted to tackle the ‘Aqabah (steep path)!

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(But he hath not attempted the Ascent) He says: but did he go beyond that hurdle which is the Bridge over hell?

Tafseer Jalalain

Yet why does he not assault the obstacle?, [why] does he [not] surmount it?

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

Yet he did not make his way through the steep course,

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

The original Arabic word is ‘aqabah, which means a steep hilly road. As explained in the next verses, it is used here for the righteous deeds that seem difficult in appearance, but carry much reward in the Hereafter.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

A believer has many responsibilities. While some of these are voluntary, others are obligatory. Referring to these, Allah asks, "For what reason does man not emerge from the abyss?" i.e. why does man not spend his wealth to emerge from the abyss in which he is constantly fighting his Nafs (carnalself ) and satan. This unending struggle of man in which he strives to fulfil Allah's commands is compared to a deep abyss from which one struggles to emerge.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

The words in the original are: fa-lagtaham-al- aqabah. Iqtiham means to apply oneself to a hard and toilsome task, and 'aqabah is the steep path that passes through mountains for ascending heights. Thus, the verse means: "One of the two paths that We have shown him, leads to heights but is toilsome and steep; man has to tread it against the desires of his self and the temptations of Satan. The other path is easy which descends into chasms, but does not require any toil from man; one only needs to give free reins to oneself, then one automatically goes on rolling down the abyss. Now, the man to whom We had shown both the paths, adopted the easy down-hill path and abandoned the toilsome path, which leads to the heights."

It is the freeing of a slave(13)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

the difficult path of virtue is defined :as the path of charity or unselfish love .
And three specific instances are given (for our understanding: viz (1)freeing the bondman (2) feeding the orphan and (3) feeding the indigent down in the dust.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

It is the freeing of a neck (slave) from bondage

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

((It is) to free a slave) He says: its crossing requires the freeing of a slave; and it is also said this means: none will cross it save he who has freed a slave,

Tafseer Jalalain

the freeing of a slave, from bondage,

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

([It is] freeing of the neck of a slave ... 90:13). This is a great
devotional act [and carries a great reward because] it moulds a man's life

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

(It is) freeing of the neck of a slave,

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah Ta'ala then presents three examples of deeds that will remove him from the an orphaned or a dust-covered destitute. (17) Man will then become of
abyss so that he can win the battle against his Nafs and Satan.
The first is " the emancipation of slaves" . This entails setting slaves free
irrespective of whether the act is done voluntarily or because one is compelled to as in the case .of Kaffara (expiation). Also included in the ambit of freeing slaves are " Kitabah" and " Tadblr" . The Holy Prophet said that when a
person frees a slave, every limb of the person that corresponds with a limb of the slave will be freed from the fire of Hell. & reports that a villager once came to the Sayyidina Bara bin Azib Holy Prophet and asked what deed could admit him into Heaven, the Holy Prophetsaid , " Free a soul and emancipate a slave." " But are the two not the same thing?" enquired the man. The Holy Prophet replied, " No Freeing a soul means that you free a slave all by yourself and emancipating a slave means that you assist in paying his price ( e.g. helping a Mukdtab slave pay his price for freedom). Also among the deeds that will admit you into Heaven is that you give someone an animal that gives a lot of milk or that you behave politely with cruel relative. If you cannot do this, then feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, enjoin good and prevent evil If you cannot do this even , then use your tongue for nothing except good words." [" Mishkat" p. 294 ]

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

about fakku raqabah (fleeing a neck from bondage) many
ahadith have been related in the traditions, one of which is a tradition from Hazrat Abu Hurairah, to the effect; "The Holy Prophet said: The person who set a believing slave free, Allah will save from fire of Hell every limb of his body in lieu of every limb of the slave's body, the hand in lieu of the hand, the foot in lies of the foot, the private parts in lieu of the private parts " (Musnad, Ahmad, Bukhari. Muslim, Tirmidhi,
Nasa'i). Hadrat 'Ali bin Husain (lmam Zain al-`Abedin) asked Sa`d bin Marjanah, the reporter of this Hadith: "Did you hear it yourself from Abu Hurairah?" When 6e replied in the affirmative, Imam Zain al` Abedin called out his most valuable slave and set him free there and then. According to Muslim, he had an offer often thousand dirhams for the slave. On the basis of this verse, Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Sha`bi have ruled: "Setting a slave free is superior to giving away charity, for Allah has mentioned it before the mention of charity.

Translation Sahih International

An orphan of near relationship(15)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

All orphans should be fed and helped. But ordinary orphans will come under the indigent in verse 16 below. The orphans related to us have a special claim on us. They should be near and dear to us, and if charity begins at home , they have the first claim on us.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

Finally the people are advised to give up spending for ostentation, display

and pride, and should spend their wealth to help the orphans and the needy

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

If an orphaned family member is given food to eat, its reward is two
fold, for satisfying the hunger of a hungry person and for maintaining
family ties and fulfilling his rights.
(in a day of hunger ... 90:14).
It means that feeding him in
a day when he is hungry will attract more reward. If an orphan is not a
close relative or family member, but he is so poor as to be wallowing in
dust, spending on him will yield a greater reward. The poorer the person
is, the greater will be the reward for the spender.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

The second and third deeds to remove one from the " abyss" in "on a day of
hunger, feeding an orphaned relative" and feeding "a dust-covered destitute" . The destitute person referred to in the verse is someone who has absolutely nothing and has to sleep on the bare ground, causing his body to be covered in dust .

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

As for the orphans, there are numerous sayings reported from the Holy Prophet. Hadrat Sahl bin Sa`d has reported: "The Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) said: I and the one who supports a nearly related of un-related orphan, shall stand in Paradise like this-saying this he raised his index finger and the middle finger, keeping them a little apart." (Bukhari). Hadrat Abu Hurairah has reported this saying of the Holy Prophet: "The best among the Muslim homes is the home wherein an orphan is treated well and the worst the one wherein an orphan is mistreated." (Ibn Majah, Bukhari in Al-Adab al- Mufrad). Hadrat Abu Umamah says that the Holy Prophet said: "The one who passed his hand on the head of an orphan, only for the sake of Allah, will have as many acts of virtue recorded in his favour as the number of the hair on which his hand passed, and the one who treated an orphan boy or girl well. will stand in Paradise with me like this...saying this the Holy Prophet joined his two fingers together." (Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi). Ibn 'Abbas says: The Holy Prophet said: "The one who made an orphan join him in eating and drinking, Allah will make Paradise obligatory for him unless he commits a sin which cannot be forgiven." (Sharh as- Sunnah).Hadrat Abu Hurairah says: A man complained before the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace), saying: "I am hard-hearted." The Holy Prophet said to him: "Treat the orphan with kindness and love and feed the needy one." (Musnad Ahmad).

Or a needy person in misery(16)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Person down in the dust can only be helped from motives of pure charity.
Because nothing can be expected of them- neither praise nor advertisement nor any other advantage to the helper. Such help is help indeed. But there may be various degrees. and the help will be suited to the needs.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

The Holy Prophet has mentioned the merits of rendering help to the needy in many ahadith, one of which is this Hadith from Hadrat Abu Hurairah:
"The Holy Prophet said: The one who strives in the cause of rendering help to the widow and the needy is like the one who endeavors and strives in the cause of jihad for the sake of Allah. (And Hadrat Abu Hurairah says :) I think that the Holy Prophet also said: He is even like him who keeps standing up in the Prayer constantly, without ever taking rest, and like him who observes the fast continuously without ever breaking it:" (Bukhari, Muslim).

Section 01

Traditional understanding

Translation, tafseer from classical and modern scholars, transliteration, word-by-word grammar.

Translation Sahih International

And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.(17)

Tafseer Abdullah Yusuf

Such practical charity and love will be the acid test of Faith and the teaching of all virtues. the virtues are Summed up under the names of Patience (the Arabic word includes constancy and self restraint) and compassionate kindness. Not only will they be the test by which the sincerity of their Faith will be judged; they will be the fruit which their Faith will constantly produce.

Tafseer Dr. Farooq Azam

They should believe in Allah, join the company of believers and participate in the construction of human society.

Tafseer Ibn Abbas

(And to be) in addition to this (of those who believe) in private between themselves and their Lord, in Muhammad (pbuh) and the Qur'an (and exhort one another to perseverance) in fulfilling the obligations (and export one another to pity) towards the poor and needy.

Tafseer Jalalain

while being (thumma kāna is a supplement to iqtahama, ‘he assaulted’; thumma is for the ordering of things to be mentioned) in other words, [what is meant is that] at the point of the assault he was: one of those who believe and enjoin one another to steadfastness, in [pursuing] obedience and in refraining from disobedience, and enjoin one another to compassion (marhama means rahma), towards creatures.

Tafseer Ma’arif Ul-Quran

(then he did not join those , who believe and advise each other to be patient and advise each other to be merciful ... 90:17). The verse points out that the doing only of good actions mentioned in the foregoing verse is not enough for raising the all round stature of the Muslim community. Good ideals and right principles, combined with continuous and sustained adherence to the path of moral rectitude and teaching of virtues to others, are equally essential for the attainment of the high aim. Thus the verse after 'faith' draws the attention of a believer to his socio-moral obligation to the effect that he ought to teach his other Muslim brothers to be patient and to be merciful. The word sabr signifies 'to withhold oneself from evil deeds and to act upon good deeds'. The word marhamah signifies 'to show mercy to one another or to empathise with others and abstain from hurting them.' This embraces almost all the injunctions of the entire religion.

Tafseer Mufti Taqi Usmani

then he did not join those who believe and advise each other to be patient and advise each other to be merciful.

Tafseer Shaikh Ashiq Ilahi

Allah states further that when man will do this, " Man will then become of
those who believe, those who enjoin each other to be patient and those who enjoin each other to be compassionate."
Iman (belief ) is the most important deed because no good deed is accepted without it. Allah adds that enjoining each other to be patient is an essential trait of belief . The word " sabr" ( translated above as " patience" ) refers to remaining steadfast in performing good deeds, refraining from sin as well as exercising patience when afflicted with any difficulty. As explained in other verses (such as verse 153 of Surah Baqarah ) , the word " sabr" entails all these three meanings. Another requirement of belief is that a person encourages others to show compassion towards the rest of creation.

Tafseer Tafheem Ul-Quran

That is, "In addition to these qualities it is essential that one should be a believer, for without faith no act is an act of virtue, nor acceptable in the sight of Allah. At numerous places in the Qur'an it has been stated that only such an act of virtue is appreciable and becomes a means of salvation as is accompanied by faith. In .Surah An-Nisa', for example, it has been said: "The one who does good deeds, whether man or woman, provided that the one is a believer, will enter Paradise (v. 124.)"
In Surah An- Nahl: "Whosoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, provided that he is a believer, We shall surely grant him to live a pure life in this world, and We will reward such people (in the Hereafter) according to their best deeds" (v. 97).
In Surah Al-Mu'min: "Whoever does good, whether man or woman, provided that he is a believer, all such people shall enter Paradise wherein they shall be provided without
measure." (v : 40).
Whoever studies the Qur'an, will see that in this Book wherever the good reward of a righteous act has been mentioned, it has always been made conditional upon the faith, a good act without faith; has nowhere been regarded as acceptable to God, nor has any hope been given for a
reward for it. Here, the following important point also should not remain hidden from view: In this verse it has not been said: "Then he believed", but: "Then he joined those who believed.' This means that mere believing as an individual and remaining content with it is not what is desired; what is desired is that every new believer should join those who have already believed so as to form a party of the believers, to bring about a believing society, which should work for establishing the virtues and wiping out the vices as demanded by the faith.
